‘Criminal Minds’ Co-Star Kirsten Vangsness To Reprise Her Role On ‘Minds’ Spinoff?
I hear Criminal Minds co-star Kirsten Vangsness’ deal is done and she will be a regular both on the main series and on its upcoming spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, playing FBI computer analyst Penelope Garcia.
UPDATE: CBS just issued a press release confirming Vangsness’ deal:
LOS ANGELES – July 19, 2010 — Kirsten Vangsness, who stars as Penelope Garcia in the CBS drama CRIMINAL MINDS, will also join the midseason series CRIMINAL MINDS: SUSPECT BEHAVIOR as a series regular. Garcia, a computer wizard who helps research cases, will play the same role and support the “Suspect Behavior” BAU team headed up by Special Agent Sam Cooper, played by Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker.
“In reality, the real BAU teams share analysts, so it made sense for us to combine the positions on TV,” explained CRIMINAL MINDS: SUSPECT BEHAVIOR Executive Producer Chris Mundy. “On a personal note, Kirsten is amazing, both personally and professionally. Her talent will make our new series that much better both on screen and behind the scenes.”
“I’m super excited to be invited onto the series,” said Vangsness. “The cast is astounding and I love playing this character.”
CRIMINAL MINDS: SUSPECT BEHAVIOR will star Forest Whitaker, Janeane Garofolo, Matt Ryan, Michael Kelly and Beau Garrett. CRIMINAL MINDS and CRIMINAL MINDS: SUSPECT BEHAVIOR are produced by ABC Television Studios in association with CBS Television Studios. The executive producers are Chris Mundy, Edward Allen Bernero, Mark Gordon and Deborah Spera.

This must be because CBS hates chicks so much, huh?
I find her very annoying, I hope they kill her in the spin off.
nice to see someone embrace violence towards women so blatantly
I find her to be thoroughly refreshing! An original. She does not fit the “mold” seen on TV shows as a character or in her personal life. I find that she adds a tremendous energy and integrity to the show and is completely believeable in her role as Garcia. I hope that the story line develops with some personal aspects to her life and more intense interactions with Derek Morgan regarding development of their apparent close friendship. I miss Mandy Patatkin from the show – he added something very special. All the characters are great. I also miss JJ from the show. Love all the characters and especially Garcia! I came late to this show. Only started watching it this past year and one of the local stations in Baltimore shows many of the back season shows, so I’m catching up. I think it’s a very well acted series. I feel that Garcia is far more important to this series than most people think. I feel she’s like the hub of the wheel that ties the stokes together.
Maybe you will reconsider your feelings about her, but if you don’t, it doesn’t matter! There are a lot of TV fans out there who love her character!
The character Penelope Garcia IS annoying but she adds to the series and do we not all think of computer geeks (wizards) as being off the wall. Good on her!
Great, not losing Garcia to the spin off. Hope she enjoys her time there, hope everyone who watches enjoys her and the show. And, I’ll still be able to see her on the original.
Good for her but I still won’t be watching it. This is only CBS trying to lure CM original fans to the spin off. Won’t work though as the majority of fans are going to boycott the spin off after the treatment of AJ Cook and Paget Brewster.
CBS doesn’t care about the 43,000 vocal fans – they care about the 14 MILLION people who watch CM.
Great, great pick up. Looks like I will be watching the spin off. What a cast. Looking forward to this show more than any other out there.
kirsten’s both a great actress and a great person. as we all know these two things don’t always go together. you go girl!
I find it hard to believe that the ridiculous spin off actually got picked up. Love KV but will watch her on CM: Original Recipe and not this piece of garbage.
Yes, miscreant dude, CBS does appear to “hate chicks.” Bare mimimum females, now they’re just using the same woman in multiple shows. Probably cheaper that way. CBS must be worried using her as bait to get women to watch. This out of touch show and its anemic spawn are over. I’m a guy and I want to see more women especially smart effective women. Who wants to watch a bunch of dudes doing the same old over and over, fulfilling some juvenile fantasy of the patriarchy. No wonder people are being driven away from tv
Good for her! I watch CM and love her character (although it’s often too over-the-top grisly). I’ll check out the new series for her and the cast.
The appeal of Garcia is her banter with Morgan and JJ and seriously can’t see her having much chemistry with this bunch of misfits. Sorry but its not appealing to me at all – still have a sour taste in my mouth over what happened with the original Criminal Minds and the female cast.
actully the official word is she is going to be doing both the original and the spin off since they both use the skills of her character. the worse the spin off tanks.
Won’t be watching solely because of Ms. Garofolo. Can’t abide her in any sense. And that’s a pity, because i am a fan and continuing watcher of the original and would have loved to see a similar show spearheaded by Mr. Whitaker.
I wonder how her character (off-beat, semi-strange) will fit in with Janeane Garofolo–who has seldom played an ordinary person.
Given the format of the original show (one of these, one of these, one of these, etc) which ‘one of these’ type characters will Janeane play?
I like Forest Whitaker and Janeane as actors, but I was so underimpressed with Laurence Fishburne when he took over the male lead in CSI (bad casting?) I wonder about Whitaker & Garofolo fitting into the show format.
I think if any of the new characters don’t give Penelope the respect we know she’s earned then I won’t like that character. Whitaker may be the lead in the series but if the scripts aren’t well written and the characters put together to create a balance then he can’t save them.
CSI (the mothership) is still my favorite I would watch one of their reruns over one of the parvenus first run. I’m thankful CSI Miami starts out with the weird lighting so I know to change the channel immediately. Gary Sinise is enough to make his show watchable although I won’t miss the departing female lead.
It’ll be interesting to see the previews of the new show, at least.
Seems people forget about Frank Cady who played Sam Druker on both “Petticoat Junction” and “Green Acres” in the 1960′s. (Both CBS shows, too!)
Two different sets of characters on two slighty different shows – PJ was a family sitcom and GA was comedy-satire.
The kind of story every actor lives for:)
Actor gets one-shot guest star on a show (as Kirsten did on CMs). Then gets asked back for a few more episodes. Then joins the cast as a regular. Then gets on two series at once!? Good for her. She (and her story) are definitely good for morale.
Sharing cast members is CBS and Criminal Minds producers’ brilliant idea on how to spread the cost of actors across two series. She’s already under contract. This is a cost saving maneuver. Episodic T.V. and one hour dramas are an endangered species and this is another desperate attempt at squeezing a buck (which means talent) until it cries uncle!
It doesn’t work that way. She’ll have two contracts – one for each series , get payed for each series from each show’s budget, and get residuals from each series. The only money they’ll save is not having to build another standing set.
It will be interesting to see what her billing on the show will be, perhaps “…and”
Looking forward for that. Is it on yet?

this is an attempt to save both the spinoff show’s audience and a few bucks. Kristen’s Penelope is one (if not the most) beloved characters in CM Original Recipe, and they’re using it to get fans watch the spinoff show, without having to spend extra money in casting a new female lead. This adds even more to my theory that they probably won’t cast any actress to replace AJ COOK. Perhaps when Brewster is out next year, they’ll hire one to balance things. Or maybe, they get one of the girls in the spinoff to go double duty as well.
What saving money? This is costing CBS,etc MORE MONEY – If they didn’t have her on the series, they’d have to hire another actor/actress to fill the part of Tech analyst who they could have gotten under a cheeper contract, most likey as a supporting-recurring player.
Do you folks really believe Kirsten is going to make LESS For
appearing on the Spin-off then being on CM?
As I’ve said before, two shows – two budgets – two contracts.
All they save is the wardrobe budget (Pieces can be used on both shows) and having to bulid another standing set (Garcia’s Tech lab)
Your theory is wrong – this has nothing to do with what happens regarding AJ Cook’s replacement – they’ve ALREADY said they are going to add a new female to CM this year. They’ve never did said they are replacing Paget Brewster, however.
They don’t need Kirsten to be on CM:Suspect Behavior to get fans,or viewers to watch – CSI: Miami and CSI:NY didn’t need any of the cast from the original to bring people to watch ‘em, and neither does CM:Suspect Behavior. This is a CREATIVE choice – not a “we need someone to be on the show from the original” – if that was the case, they could have gotten AJ or Paget!
I just wish the character would learn how to type….fake talking while typing is very annoying to me personally.
The whole show is a joke. It needs to end. Whoever thought it up, the writers, producer, whoever the idiot is who decided to play crummy, “meaningful”, “inspiring” music in the background constantly, the horrible “actors” ( ACTING??), the identifying with and empathy for the psychotic’s they chase, quotes at the end, it all needs to stop. ‘Reid’ needs to grow some sack and become a man before he carry’s a Fed issue revolver.
I am just wondering why the person who hates the show so much, is even interested in posting a comment. I don’t look up blogs on shows I despise and comment on them.. but then again I don’t watch shows that I despise and it sounds like you do!!
i dont understand why they have continued to try and “develop” garcias character. she was great in season one season two and even season three as a supporting but thats all she is. She is a tech analyst and thats it shes not a profiler not an agent and by continuing to up her character your making the show less and less believable. A technical analyst would never join an elite group of bau agents on a field mission, she would never interrogate or been even interview for that matter, a suspect. These people have trained for years to be the best in the world at what they do and im suppose to believe that a technical analyst is as qualified to do the same. For example dr reid is by far one the most intelligent people on the planet in the criminal minds universe and the produce are expecting me to by that garcia rivals his intelligence. no one on the teams intellect is even close his. Look i get it shes funny fans like her and she adds that quality of “quirkyness” to the program (like that goth girl on ncis) but thats it shes not a profiler not a cop not an agent and no where near qualified to be. the one thing ive always loved about this show is it is one of the most believable on television but with the producers promoting her and demoting charactecrs like prentise, who is and actual agent, and even removing character like jj(aj cook) YOU ARE RUINING THE SHOW
I am willing to see the presentation. They will do nextel
