UPDATED: Kitty Kelley’s controversial unauthorized biography of Oprah Winfrey will be given the biopic treatment. Veteran TV movie producer Larry A. Thompson has acquired the rights to the book, Oprah: A Biography, published in the spring by Crown Publishers, a division of Random House.
Thompson plans to turn the book into a TV movie or a miniseries to air in September 2011, coinciding with Winfrey’s sign-off from her syndicated daytime talk show after 25 years. He is close to signing a writer for the adaptation and is already shopping the project to TV networks.
“I happen to be from Mississippi where she is from, and I know her career very well,” Thompson said. “I think it’s a fabulous story, and it’s certainly a challenge, but Kitty Kelley’s extensively researched book offers us the factual foundation to frame our cinematic portrait of this powerful and beloved icon.”
Asked about possible concerns basing a biopic on a book that has stirred so much controversy Thompson said “Oprah Winfrey is a very powerful woman, and that’s also something that will make our movie great. As for the challenge of casting Winfrey, the plan is to audition both known and unknown actresses Thompson said but after a long debate, he is leaning towards casting an unknown.”Oprah Winfrey is one of the most famous faces on the planet, and if you have an actress people know, it may make it more difficult to get into the character as the face may block the icon,” he said. The movie is being made without Winfrey’s participation, Thompson added. In public statements, Winfrey has dismissed the book, which touches upon a number of hot-button issues, including the identity of Winfrey’s father, calling it a “so-called biography.”
Thompson’s biopic experience includes films about Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, Sonny & Cher, and the Duke & Duchess of Windsor. His latest movie, Amish Grace, became the most-watched and highest-rated original movie in the history of Lifetime Movie Network.

Paula Newsome would be perfect. I love her…so underrated.
Totally agree. Excellent actress who doesn’t get near enough attention.
Paula Newsome should play Oprah. She could pass for her sister. . .
Viola Davis! Plus, it’s got a great twist: an Oscar nominee gets to play another Oscar nominee.
I second your Viola Davis suggestion – she resembles her physically and is one hell of an actress, would be a meaty role, and Viola would do the part justice.
Can’t wait to see this flix. Davis has my vote!
Sertainly?
huh? what’s the controvercy?
Whomever it is should expect to never ever ever be a guest on an OWN or Oprah show for the rest of her life…
Matt – I think you’re right. It’s probably best to get someone who’s not a name.
Central Casting No-brainer: Tori Spelling: Big O; Ross the Intern: Steadman; Megan Fox: Gayle.
RuPaul?
Paula Newsome. The resemblance is uncanny.
I vote for Gabby Sibodeh. She’d do a whale of a job.
Two words: Meryl Streep!
and have her play Oprah as a white person that would be killer!!!!
Gabourey Sibide would be great and Oprah has always supported her. Go Gabby! If she’s not available, maybe Martin Lawrence.
Gabby is her younger yrs. in MS. Davis for the Baltimore, Chicago and subsequent stories.
Most likely places for telefilm to air would be Lifetime and Hallmark networks. Both have the daytime female audience that OWN will be chasing once it airs and both are certainly feeling threatened with potential viewing migration. So either would sure like to see Oprah portrayed in a less than godlike way. Plus, neither is likely to get PR exposure for themselves on the Oprah venues (for the same competitive reasons) so they aren’t risking much. Although Hallmark’s been busy promoting itself as holier than thou, claiming it won’t do negative programming, so it’ll be interesting to see how they might explain things if they wind up acquiring Kelley’s catty version.
Can’t we just wait until Oprah is dead for the biopic? *groans*
And posthumously sainted? People would throw a piss fit if this were made “when she’s not here to defend herself.”
Apparently Tyler Perry thinks he can play a black woman more convincingly than an ACTUAL black woman, and since the two are already friends, my money is on him.
Robert de Niro. He’s the only actor who can gain and lose the weight required for this role.
Kimberley Locke.
Queen Latifah, obviously.
no one who wants a career will touch this role.
this just shows holly wood has sunk to a new low and run out of creativity to let kitty kelly have a movie of her trash made. wonder how long before Oprah uses any influence and puts a stop to the thing for good
Mo’Nique. She is super talented and it is sad that there are no roles for her.
I only hope Kitty Kelley has done thorough research.
Maestro
Relax, people! No actress of any name or stature will go within a mile of this role for fear of upsetting “The Great One.”
Jennifer Hudson, hands down, tho she’d have to put the weight back on and then off, and then on again. Itd be perfect. Plus she could handle the role.
WE so don’t need this!!
Gary Oldman. Nothing more to be said.
