EXCLUSIVE: Larry Charles, who steered Sacha Baron Cohen through audacious comic turns in Bruno and Borat, is now ready to do the same for Jim Carrey. Charles has signed on to direct Pierre Pierre, a comedy that has Carrey playing the role of a Frenchman who transports a stolen painting from Paris to London, behaving more obnoxiously than any waiter you’ve ever encountered at Cannes.
This project is moving forward again after weathering some serious setbacks. Two years ago, the script by then-unknowns Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton made the Black List and sold for $1 million, with Carrey to star and Juno‘s Jason Reitman attached to direct.
Fox Atomic’s Debbie Liebling and Peter Rice won the bidding battle over three others. Then: Reitman dropped out; Fox Atomic imploded; Liebling moved to Universal; Rice moved up in the Fox hierarchy. Sans champion, Pierre Pierre fell into turnaround. With Charles aboard, the comedy will be shopped again by its producers, Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, and Category 5′s Brian Sher. They plan to make the movie for just over $20 million.
As a connoisseur of physical comic performances, I salivated over the prospect of Carrey playing Curly Howard (each the best physical comic of his generation) in the Farrelly Brothers-directed The Three Stooges.
That opportunity might have been squandered by MGM’s fiscal paralysis, though I hear there’s a chance Carrey will do it if Sean Penn remains in the fold as Larry Fine. Short of Curly, the prospect of seeing Carrey commit to an outrageous original comic character creation in a strong script at a $20 million budget is a gamble someone will take. If you consider Ace Ventura, The Mask, Liar, Liar, Dumb & Dumber Me, Myself & Irene or others, nobody touches Carrey’s raw physical comedy skills, even if he doesn’t use them often enough.

“The Pen is Blue” from Liar Liar is still one of my favorite scenes of Carrey’s ever! Nobody else could make that simple scene so funny.
the real question is: who is willing to take the gamble on Larry Charles? He repeatedly is on and then off projects, and to say that BORAT was his film would be a slight misnomer. BORAT was Sacha’s movie and then maybe Jay Roach’s.
Dude, didn’t you see MASKED AND ANONYMOUS? It was fucking awesome, if incomprehensibly so.
awesome movie
The first few pages of Pierre Pierre are genius and hilarious. The rest, yawn.
I thought Sean Penn dropped out of The Three Stooges long ago and was reportedly replaced by Paul Giamatti.
This script was a shining example of how agency favors and politics influence the Black List. For every exec or assistant who “liked” this script, I know 4 who hated it. I couldn’t even read it past page 10. This will be another total bomb by a big name comedic actor who can’t open a movie anymore…
This is one of my all time favorite scripts! i never thought Jason Reitman was the right director for it. Larry Charles is actually PERFECT and the combo of he and Carrey for it is genius! Definite Borat / Bruno type box office potential!
I’d heard that Paul Giamatti dropped out and Sean Penn opted back in, and Penn, Carrey and Benecio Del Toro were set. And Carrey was going to gain 40 pounds for the movie. It’d suck to gain the weight and have the movie not happen.
notice how all these “big” movies are budgeted at 20M? that used to be Jim Carey’s fee alone… sad state of affairs re: “big” movies and budgets outside of comic book movies.
The only Jim Carrey movie I will see is a new Ace Ventura. That’s it, the line has been drawn. It will make $300 million. It’s the easiest movie in the world to make and market. Besides Carrey’s price, it will cost nothing. Why is this not being done?
That’s the problem with the movie business today: too many original movies, not enough sequels.
Jim Carrey doesn’t like to make sequels thats why. He only did the second Ace Ventura becuase it was in his contract. Which is sad becuase I loved those movies but I like that he always does something new, something different.
what is happening with his show “our show?” anyone know? i love the corddry’s and was looking forward to that.
Our Show update … turns out Larry forgot he didn’t create the show and therefore forgot to tell McG (Producer) Warner TV (shows backer) and NBC … and now … they all get to go to court … yah. Turns out the show was developed and pitched (and first sold) by Chris Masterson and a pal of his.
the pilot is up on youtube but listed as private (but i’m happy to send the link.)
Word is Syfy is still interested in picking it up (and so is FX) if Larry can fix the legal stuff soon.
This has always been one of the funniest and most surprising scripts I have ever read! I vividly remember sitting in my office at New Line and laughing out loud as I read each deliciously shocking word! Can’t wait to see this movie finally come to life with Carrey and Charles!
I can not wait to see this movie! It sounds amazing & what a perfect collaboration, 20M is plenty to make this rock!
