Magnolia Pictures has completed an acquisition of I’m Still Here: The Lost Year Of Joaquin Phoenix, the mockumentary that Casey Affleck directed about his brother-in-law’s bizarre transformation from acclaimed actor to debauched hip-hop artist. Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles tells me the film is set for a platform release on September 10, with wide release a week later. Bowles acknowledged the possibility of a festival premiere — I hear Venice or Toronto — and the Magnolia release will include a VOD component.
Phoenix has a relationship with Magnolia that includes Two Lovers, his last film before he took this odd journey. Bowles said Phoenix will be speaking about the pic in some capacity. Bowles said he made the deal after several face-to-face meetings with Affleck and acquired the film over several other bidding outlets. Bowles was among the distributors who attended buyer screenings held on both coasts by sales agent WME Global. Some distribs walked away turned off or confused. They weren’t sure if this was an Andy Kaufman-like hoax, or a great actor’s meltdown. Among other hijinks, Phoenix is seen snorting coke off the breast of a prostitute.
Bowles didn’t say whether he believed the storyline, but he came away confident this was a film he could sell, and that it introduces the work of a real filmmaker in Affleck. “No matter what I thought coming in, I came out feeling this was a pretty amazing piece of work, jaw dropping but dimensional,” Bowles told me. “It is going to get a lot of attention, but it is not some cheap stunt where they said, ‘Let’s do some wild stuff and film it.’ It is extreme behavior but really good filmmaking as well. Frankly, some of the behavior is very extreme. But it is in the context of the insanity of being in Joaquin’s life for that period of time. It is a unique piece of work that is going to surprise people in different ways.”
WME reps both Affleck and Phoenix and WME Global brokered the deal.

Hopefully he will plug it on Letterman
Perhaps Mr. Bowles should warn folks that Joaquin’s behavior in this mock-doc is, at times, extreme, or so I hear. Oh… wait…
Is snorting coke off the breast of a prostitute a bad thing?
Hobo with a shotgun, anybody?
This really does sound interesting. I don’t know why whenever an actor creates a character based on his or her alter ego we compare them to the work of Kaufman. Enough already! This should stand on it’s own and probably will. Most actors…er…99.9999% never create characters based on themselves so KUDOS to Joaquin…it takes real courage and a bit of talent to pull this off!
So did he have meltdown or not? Love his acting so i hope he is done with this now……
The only good thing to come out of this absurd hoax that no one believed from day one for one second was Joaquin’s appearance on David Letterman’s show. Letterman’s quip towards the end of the interview was absolute genius: “Sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.”
Awesome.
Interesting way for a film to explore the nature of reality. Regardless of Jaoquin’s actual state of mind (bless you brother), this film will get people asking “what is real?” and “Who am I?” and hopefully extend this inquiry as far as it will go.
In creation (whether it be from the linked imaginations and energy between an author and an actor/actress, to our individual and collective realities) all is just an illusion that we perceive as real in different ways. Reality is created through perception. Consciousness is. Namaste friends
I think the only surprise is gonna be how Magnolia stays in business when they obviously haven’t got a clue. I know Mark Cuban got about a billion dollars from Yahoo for his “concept” that never came to fruition, but jeez. Other than the the guy hasn’t been successful at anything other than getting more unwarranted press than Paris Hilton.
Lame. Twitter hijinx, but not a movie.
It sucks that three people as talented and smart as Joaquin, Casey, and Eamonn are wasting their time on this.
Absolutely. Not a cute stunt when your older brother died of a drug overdose in front of you. this is not kreative, insightful or sincere – you want to be a Frat Boy, join a fraternity. No one else cares.
I love that Phoenix completely played the entire media network in America, and everybody bought it. Kudos.
You must have been really disappointed to learn, then, that NO ONE bought this silly idea and that EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE ever written about the hoax was either skeptical or downright not believing it for a second. You must have been on vacation during that time (damn…wish I could go on vacation for that long!)
I can’t wait to see this! I would rather watch Joaquin snort coke off a girls tits than some 3D/CGI garbage like Alice In Wonderland, Prince Of Persia, Clash Of The Titans, or The Last Airbender any day of the week.
It is a very original idea. Yeah, people have done similar things in the past, but never an A-List actor at the height of his career (the last thing he did he won an Oscar) and never with such an extreme commitment to the character (he took method acting to a new level). I bet it will be hilarious and eye-opening at the very least. I just hope it’s not another year until we get to see the dang thing.
I too like Joaquin as an actor, but oddly it seems that he’s the only one not in on this joke.
He is just another actor who has created something that create moe publicity for his role in that extreme sport we call Hollywood.
Dunno about the idea that Joaquin is doing this “at the height of his career,” since that last film Two Lovers was total crap. (Yes, I saw your point that he won an Oscar…) Two Lovers was junk. I couldn’t relate to either manipulative self-involved, self-loathing character and when the viewer can’t relate to either main character…and keeps guessing about what is trying to be conveyed, film=CRAP.
What a load of crap!..At this point I do not care what this B-lister of hollywood has done. The publicity machine is roaring and crying in overtime on this one…two women file a lawsuit?…real?…Letterman?…Method Acting?..whatever..This story is so tiring…I have the same feeling on this as I do on Angelina Jolie…GO AWAY!…
