Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s 2010 Emmy and TCA coverage:
At the kickoff of the summertime Television Critics Association press tour this morning, Desperate Housewives creator/showrunner Marc Cherry
stood in a house on the Wisteria Lane set at Universal Studios and said something he never had before: He could see handing off his 6-year-old baby to someone else to run after the coming 7th season. In fact he thought it was likely, as he’s now penning a pilot for a potential new ABC series that he hopes will be up and running by next June. He wouldn’t elaborate on what the pilot is about, only noting it ”will not be set in suburbia”. “I’ve got a contract that keeps me around ABC for a few more years,” said Cherry, who is under a rich overall deal through the 2011-2012 season. “I hope (Housewives will be around) for a couple of more seasons, and my thing is I always will be executive producer and consultant on the show. It’s my baby. I can’t let go. I have control issues. They can’t totally get rid of me.”
Cherry’s willingness to step back and let someone else run Housewives represents a change of heart for the hands-on creator/showrunner. Here is what he said back in 2007 after signing a four-year deal to take Housewives through season 7: “I think that, at the end of my deal, and after seven seasons, it will be a good time to call it quits. I don’t want anyone else to run the show, and I don’t want us to fade away. I don’t want to overstay my welcome.”
In April, Cherry became the target of a $20 million lawsuit filed by former Housewives regular Nicollette Sheridan who charged that her character was written out in retaliation for her having complained about Cherry and his alleged abusive treatment of cast and crew on the set. “I’m not going to comment further on that,” Cherry said today, “because I have some Disney lawyers who would have my hide if I did….As you know, I tend to kill off people on this show, something like 36 of them in its history. I’ve had only one bad experience with someone who took umbrage at their firing.” Flanked on the Housewives set by regulars Eva Longoria Parker and Marcia Cross, Cherry continued, “You guys can come here and see how we interact, and how much love and kindness and tenderness there is.
Longoria Parker said she “wasn’t even sure” if the cast’s contracts were due to expire after the coming season. “We just got out pickup letter for this year, so I assume that means we’re coming back,” she added.
Cherry also gave more details about the new cast additions Brian Austin Green (Beverly Hills, 90210) and Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty). Green will play a hunky contractor who gets involved with Bree (Marcia Cross); Williams will play the wife of a Major League Baseball player and Lynette’s (Felicity Huffman) former college pal who moves to Wisteria Lane.

It’s been going on for a long time, but it seems to be holding its ratings better than Grey’s. If only it could’ve stayed like the Twin Peaks/American Beauty mashup it started as, network-length seasons will do that to a show after a while.
Look forward to new blood in the creative dept and many more seasons of Desperate Housewives.
But it’s not; it has lower ratings than Grey’s, 4.2 vs. 4.8, or if you look at +7 5 vs. 6.3. The finale was also much bigger than Desperate’s.
& in their first seasons, Desperate started at a higher place so has fallen much more.
Notes from ABC are what made the show so predictable and took the zing out of it.
Suzanne, Channing, Josh noted the show into a box that erased the shows subversive charm.
ABC network and ABC studios eat their young.
He doesn’t want to overstay his welcome? The show did that during Season 2!
Season 2′s mystery was weak, but it did not completely derail the show. The show rebounded nicely, and has been very strong since the 5 year jump forward.
It’s just cool to hate on the show now because of the huge success it had it’s freshman season. But the show is still good. And ABC will be screwed if it left the air since it is still a solid performer in the ratings.
I enjoyed Seasons 1, 3, and 4.. I didn’t really care for the “flash forward” in Season 5 because I personally believe that’s a sign of lazy storytelling.
For me, Season 1 is amazing, Season 2 has some awful moments and some absolutely great moments, season 3 is good until Bree leaves with a good finale, Season 4 the weakest with an annoying new character and some bad plotting (despite a very strong beginning), Season 5 is the worst despite (once again) strong beginning, and Season 6 was surprisingly good and one of the best yet (the episodes leading up to and including the finale are amazing). While I love DH, it’s had its ups and downs, and I am looking forward a new showrunner. I hope he or she goes back to the nostalgic feeling and suburban commentary/satire that was lost in Season 5, and ditch the lame slapstick.
The worldwide smash ratings tell a different story.
Also, Lainie Kazan is a new resident there.
It’s still watchable at the moment, but unless they really start transitioning to a whole new batch of neighbors, 7 seasons is about all they can do. The main 4 are running out of story.
A few years ago I remember Cherry telling Variety that season 2 wasn’t up to snuff because he let other people do more of it and wasn’t as hands-on himself (I’m paraphrasing from memory, obviously, but the point remains.) Therefore, it really seems to me like a bad idea for him to cede any of it to other people, as even his version has been highly inconsistant over the past sevral yars (though stil largely enjoyable.)
What could have kept Marc Cherry too busy to be “hands on” with a hit show in its 2nd season? Especially when people were saying early on what a train wreck it was compared to the very popular season one? Why on earth stand aside and delegate when your hit show’s going over a cliff creatively? Cherry was either the most irresponsible showrunner in history, or he wasn’t as hands off as he claims. He’s happy to take credit when people like a season, but when they don’t he claims it was all someone else’s fault, like twenty-four lousy episode somehow got written and shot while he was on a pee break..
It’s a good question, but Jake is recalling correctly.
For whatever reason, Cherry claimed the season 2 issues were because he took his hands off the wheel, and then came back from season 3. I have no idea what was keeping him busy though. I would have to wonder why he thinks the same might not happen again.
I watched the show when it began, but I do feel that after a resurgence in season 3 and 4 it’s been on a slide again. I saw very little of season 6, but what I did see wasn’t so great.
Cherry has already covered his ass — no small feat — for season 8. If it tanks it’s because he handed it over to others and reduced his role to consultant. If it does well it’s not because of the new blood running it, but because it was still his baby and he couldn’t let go.
Maybe nicollette sheridan will star in his pilot.
Call it desperate actress..
LOL
Why would ABC put a new Marc Cherry show on the air if DH is still getting numbers? They have him under contract until 2012 – let’s see how fast they pick up the show that takes him off of Desperate…
Someone is selling this very lovely and talented man swampland in Florida!
I understand your skepticism, but the truth is that ABC is actually pressuring him for a new show. I guess they feel DH is established enough, and they need new shows with strong voices.
This show ceased to be interesting and funny when Drea Matteo joined the cast. No her fault. The writing was stale. The characters boring. Blah. Blah.
Who cares about Cherry — I’m just so happy to see Ray Richmond’s name at the top of this post!
Let Nicollette Sheridan run it.
Sorry, but this past season sucked big time. What happened to the wit, the humor, the intricate plotting?
Bring back Joe Keenan!
Oh, Josh…it just hasn’t been the same without YOU. NOT.
I hope this show stays for another ten years.. it’s one of the few good ones on the network!
It’s ratings….and what the show goes up against on Sunday nights. ABC should be more concerned with the repetitiveness of “extreme makeover – home edition” than “Desperate Housewives”. DH still gets good ratings. Mark Cherry is smart and is willing to let the show ride out under someone else’s command. He will be hitting another home run with his new show. Best of luck Mark.
