Every summer, Hollywood offices fill up with the sons and daughters and nephews and nieces of the entertainment industry’s major players. I’ve learned that Management 360 has just made a new hire right out of Brown for an entry-level position: Sam Grey, the son of Paramount chief Brad Grey. “He had an
informational meeting with one of our managers who thought he was fantastic,” Management 360 tells me. “We offered him a mailroom trainee position this past week, and he has accepted. Sam starts with us in early August, and we’re looking forward to having him with us as we think he will have a bright future.” Insiders claim Sam pursued this opportunity with 360 “on his own”, and “at no point did Brad call anyone at 360 on his behalf. He was hired on his own merits — and not by virtue of his last name — based upon his academic credentials, his overall demeanor, and his knowledge of film and filmmakers. We had a great chat about Preston Sturges, and it’s shocking how few young people wanting to get into the business are familiar with filmmakers pre-1980!”
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Why is this a story? You put this kid’s name on your site, singling him out in this town/at his workplace, yet in two years will lambast him for taking advantage of his dad’s power. It’s not hard to believe at all that a graduate of Brown is a mailroom trainee.
Until he does something newsworthy, leave him alone.
I second this.
I “third” this. Totally inappropriate, un-newsworthy, uninteresting, and unfair post. Go for the big guns, by all means, but leave their kids and those starting out their careers alone.
I fourth this, is it news that a young Brown graduate gets a mailroom gig? Is it news that the kid of a studio exec is very familiar with how Hollywood works? This story is pure crapola.
Well I have been trying to get a job at a major for a year…now I know why….im changing my last name to Robinov-Lourd-Bruchkeimer-Emmanuel
He’s a kid? Really? He’s a college graduate that has the legal right to vote, purchase alcohol, purchase cigs, die for his country and have sex with people of anyone over the age of 18. And he’s still…a kid? He’s the son of Brad Grey, I’m sure he’s well indoctrinated in to the ways of the industry. Find something noble to defend. K? K.
Sam will never know if he’s working because of his talent or lineage.
Sad really.
That is a very cynical way to interpret this story Lytton. There is nothing sad about coming from a successful family, even if it is frustrating for those of us that don’t have good connections. Best of luck to Sam.
Who gives a shit. All the best to the kid. Good luck to him.
As a child of privilege myself, I knew that my family’s connections was the gateway to a lot of my accomplishments.
So, that being said, if he doesn’t know he’s getting a hook-up, he’s an idiot!
I’m not player hating on him, I say work whatever angle you can and keep it moving! Marry a producer, be born into the right family, convert to a religion, whatever!
Mazeltov, young Master Grey, Mazeltov!
Today’s Top Story – I decided to wear a blue shirt today…
After I had woken up from the alarm on my blackberry, I went for my routine morning pee and shower. Mid-Pee, I said to myself “I am going to wear a blue shirt today.” Once I dried off and put on my hanes boxers, I opted for the shirt my sister gave me from Bloomingdales. She bought it for me because she said it brought out the color in my eyes. Even though my eyes are hazel, we had a great chat about Pre-1980 blue shirts and how they represented an era of the past.
But very few trainee’s end up on deadline hollywood being defended for their ‘non-nepotism and academic credentials’…just saying.
Preston Sturges, what a film maker: SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS — now there’s a movie that *really* should be remade. And I’ll write it for you!
Doug
Sorry Doug, that’s such a good movie we don’t need a rewrite.
We’ll just reshoot the original script.
We do not need to know this. Really, we don’t.
And this is news why…?
Sam’s a great young man. He will undoubtedly make a name for himself in the industry. I am excited to see what’s to come for him.
In the digital age, there is still a need for a mailroom?
Knew him in high school. He’s a great kid; funny, down to earth, and nice to everyone. If any son of a major player deserves a great gig out of college, it is this guy. Can’t say the same thing about Eric Ovitz (same high school).
Sad to see this nonsense happen every day, but it’s inevitable in any industry. I’ve been working toward a full-time gig for almost a year and a half without any family ties and it’s discouraging to see this kind of garbage. I’m sure he’ll do well since any half-witted GED grad could do assistant duties in this town, let alone a Brown grad.
AGREED!
I couldnt agree with you more! I am in the same boat, but because my family is not in the biz it takes me 2 years to get in at an agency or management co.
I have no family connections whatsoever, but I interned in LA as a college student and got an assistant gig in a couple months. Another friend who went to an Ivy, also no connections and not wealthy, got a job within weeks. As did a friend and graduate of a top law school.
Nepotism was not the reason you couldn’t get a job. Not saying it’s your fault, but have some perspective.
Who cares? I heard CAA hired a new janitor yesterday. Is that newsworthy as well?
Leave Ovitz out of this.
Bravo, sir! hahah
Who cares?
On his own merits, my a&&. Best believe the manager interviewing him knew full well who his daddy was! I did the mailroom thing and became and agent and manager and this story is good fodder for comments so bring it industry folk!
Don’t know Sam – so this isn’t personal.
To say M360 did not take into consideration his last name is preposterous and disingenuous.
Nepotism isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In a town/biz where it is hard to know who to trust, a pedigree offers – at the very least – some insurance. Having grown up in the biz, I have no doubt Sam does know the business better than someone-new-to-town.
The hire is smart and makes sense. But let’s at least be honest and call it what it is! Besides, “owning it” will help him in the long run. I have seen many a-child-of deny they are a recipient of privilege only to be confused by the peers resentment.
(This type of reporting is what sets DH above the rest!)
Hey, I knew who Godard, Fellini, Bergman, Wells, Preston Struges and was very knowledgeable on the French New Wave when I started in the mailroom at a major talent agency. Why didn’t I get an article written about me on Deadline?
that’s the thing that’s sooo annoying about Hollywood, they’ll piss down your back and then tell you it’s raining.
Hello, it’s nepotism! Own up to it! My bullshit meter is off the charts. Let’s all change our reality so some guy named Ben or Sam or whatever can have a sliver of self-esteem.
OMG! He watched TCM for five minutes or got a BA in film! He knows who Preston Sturgess is! OMG! Let’s give him an Oscar and they write about how “brilliant” he is. (nothing against him personally, I’m just using it as an example.)
This is not news.
It always amazes me how only in hollywood can rich white kids get jobs in the mail room and two weeks later have their own offices making deals.
In the companies I worked for, the only people in the mail room were black, hispanic and or mentally challenged. And they certainly weren’t running the place two years later.
Affirmative action for the rich?
Fascinating post, Nikki! Please continue to keep us updated on the latest mailroom hirings around town.
WHO CARES???
THIS HAPPENS EVERY HIRING SEASON IN THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF HOLLYWOOD. SO ANOTHER EXEC’S SON/DAUGHTER IS HIRED INTO A MAILROOM? IF HE BECAME A MANAGER OUT OF COLLEGE, THEN AND ONLY THEN WOULD THIS BE NEWSWORTHY. WOW
Poor kid, considering the importance of first impressions.
Who gives a rat’s ass about this?
I read this and at first was pissed you called out someone’s kid (in DETAIL lol). But then thought: Nikki Finke/Deadline is NOT a trade paper and this is basically your website so you can do whatever you want (and we love it that you do, ussually). Just a bit surprised as I don’t think you’ve been this blatant and detailed before about someone’s kid. This happens in any and every business folks it’s not really much of a surprise or story, especially in Hollywood. I could give you twenty other names over the last three years.
Does this industry really need another Brown grad?
To say he received this job on his merits alone is a complete and utter lie. I’m sure he’s got what it takes to hand mail out (as does a monkey I saw at the zoo this weekend), but without his father’s name this story would never had gotten published, and the job would have probably gone to somebody else. The fact that Brad Grey’s name was mentioned just shows the contradiction. Of course ANYONE will hire his son, just so they can get in the Mogul’s good graces….
WTF Nikke?
