Michael Scott’s resignation has been accepted. After a series of statements by The Office star Steve Carell during the past couple of months that he will be leaving the NBC comedy series when his contract is up at the end of next season, the network confirmed his departure yesterday through primetime entertainment president Angela Bromstad. ”Not to diminish the departure of Steve, because that will impact the show, but we have tremendous faith in the writers and actors to keep it alive,” she told the AP. Bromstad left open the possibility for Carell to do future guest appearances on The Office.

John Lithgow.
Who will be the new “boss”? Carell was perfect and will be missed. Thankfully, the remaining cast rocks and will collectively help fill the gap but will be interesting to see who replaces him.
Is there anyone besides NBC who wants to see this show continue without Carrell? I wish they’d just let the show bow out gracefully instead of milking it beyond the point of all reason.
Totally agree with M. The show probably should’ve ended with Jim & Pam’s wedding. It’s vamping right now as it is. Carell’s last episode is the last episode I will watch.
How about “jump the shark” without Carrell!! Irreplaceable.
“…tremendous faith in the writers and actors to keep it alive….” This person should write for the show. This office should become an empty office building (they got outsourced). The show is no longer funny. It had moments, but that’s not wroth keeping around. After the characters Jim and Pam married that sealed the deal; nothing more to write about that makes the show worth watching. Carell was suppose to be the next story line, finding his love interest. That’ll still happen but then he’s gone. A lot of useless characters like BJ and Kadork; they write themselves in for another extra check (smart move). Carell is a man bailing on a sinking ship. I would too.
Bob Odenkirk. Great actor AND writer who could probably help the show get past the Michael Scott problem. He’s great in Breaking Bad playing a man behind a desk–he should and probably has gotten an offer. But I’m not sure he would lower himself to be on this once-great show
Some of you guys really need to take your meds. You’re so f’ing angry about a TV show? Jesus. Take a breath.
The show is still funny. It makes me laugh. I could watch an 8th season that merely consisted of Andy Bernard vs. Dwight for crying out loud.
Everyone I know still watches it.
That’s why it cracks me up when I see the haters spill out to condemn it.
Like there are better sitcoms on other than this and 30 Rock?
Not likely.
Enjoy it while this talented group still has the passion to show up and do it. It’s still a good show. The only problem most of you have with it is you’ve seen so much of it if it doesn’t blow your mind every week you get pissy.
This isn’t LOST. It’s a sitcom about people who work together and it’s damn good.
I can understand Carell leaving; his obligation has been fulfilled. I have great faith the writers will find a way to make it go on, the cast is great.
Will Arnett or David Cross if their Fox pickup doesn’t get a second season.
I’d love to see what Michael Emerson could do with it.
Other shows that tried this same strategy:
Chico and the Man
That 70′s Show
The X-Files
8 Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter
NBC should just cancel it when Carrel leaves.
Ted Danson. The guy’s still got it, and I’d love to see him in the “talking head” interview.
It’s time for Ted McGinley.
How about David Brent gets transferred from Slough to Scranton?
Would anybody else like to see Ricky Gervais in a small town in the States?
Portia de Rossi. She could basically play her character Veronica from Better Off Ted.
That’s easy… Aziz Ansari. He’s paid his dues on PARKS AND REC and SCRUBS. Time for him to step up.
I say go left field . . . Michael Emerson from LOST

Add to that Spin City after Michael J. Fox left and the “Golden Palace” sequel to “Golden Girls” after Bea Arthur left.
All flops.
Don’t do it.
That’s brilliant!
Lithgow….brilliant
They should just let the show end once Steve leaves. It will never be the same without him. And the last season wasn’t as great as the prior ones. Pam and Jim are a bit dull and aren’t as funny or interesting anymore since they’ve had the baby, and the other characters don’t seem as great as they once were either (although Dwight is still kicking butt). It’s time to go ahead and have a final season instead of waiting until the show almost gets canceled.
