The Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures’ Inception is now only the 5th film this year to gross over $100M in its first week of release joining Toy Story 3, Alice In Wonderland, Iron Man 2, and the Twilight Saga: Eclipse. But it’s the only 2D original film to do so. Warner Bros says the official number going into today is $100,155,000.

Congrats to Nolan, the cast and the crew. Very happy that JGL is gonna blow up after this. He’s way too good.
Here comes all the fan boys though… Ugh…
Excellent. I think it’s headed for $280+ million domestic, which is amazing for this kind of film.
Having just seen it for a third time yesterday its has some true staying power! still an incredible movie with new discoveries after every viewing
AWESOME!!!! Will see this after the rush next week and I can’t wait!
Fantastic.
Did Salt do any midnight business?
It’s not the Matrix
Thank God!
who said it was supposed to be?
…which is a GOOD thing.
It’s been over 10 years since its release and The Matrix still rocks!
Hooray for good filmaking and fun at the movies! What an amazing script, visually stunning, great performaces, flawlessly and beautifully executed, and to edit that footage into a clear story was just mindblowing…hooray,I say!
You don’t need 3-D if you have a story and a legit star.
Looks like over 250 total is possible, interesting to see how it holds up this weekend, but I can’t see Salt topping it. Could be wrong though as people seem to love Angelina in this type of role. Looking at numbers has never been so interesting – did I really say that?
Unfortunately, I think Salt will beat Inception this weekend. For one, Salt is a little over 90 minutes long, almost an hour shorter than Inception, so it can have more show times all weekend, therefore more possible tickets. I loved Inception, but I think the audience for it pretty much all came out the 1st weekend, since they loved Nolan and were waiting for it. I’m not so confident about people coming out for repeat viewings of it, since I think a ton of people didn’t like it because of how confusing it is to follow. I think audiences are generally dumb and looking for light-hearted entertainment like Salt. Inception will be up for lots of categories at the Oscars (Director, Screenplay, Editing, maybe Best Actor, and the technical stuff), but Salt will make more overall unfortunately. It’s sad, but that’s how audiences are.
That makes it the 5th.
Can we please have more movies with an original story line? Please, pretty please. I actually paid money to see this in the movie theater and really enjoyed the film. Didn’t feel like I had been robbed when the film was over.
Hopefully the success of Inception will mean more original films like this. Studios are usually too scared to go for originality when they can just make their millions off people getting kicked in the nuts in movies like “Grown Ups” or the other 80% of movies in theaters that always suck. Let’s hope Inception can make a ton these next few weeks for the future of cinema, creativity, and imagination.
Can we please stop using the word “original” when it ripped off Paprika?
One, two, three, four…
FIVE.
Immaculate Inception!
You know why there aren’t more original movies in theaters? Because it’s really hard to write something like Inception. My hat goes off to Nolan. He is a great writer/director/filmmaker. Looking forward to seeing Inception again this weekend.
Fantastic news! Please top-level execs, take this as a sign that all the movie-going public wants is creative, original films and not retreads, remakes, and reboots (looking at you ‘Spider-Man 4′). I’m all for sequels and franchises, but only with a GOOD story included (see ‘Toy Story 3′ for exhibit A).
This summer overall has been atrocious to say the least, I find it rather fitting that the two most critically-acclaimed wide-releases both had great stories as a launching point and hopefully this one will finish right up there with ‘Toy Story 3′ when the summer box office closes. Hollywood…take the hint, give the masses good original content (if it happens to include a top-notch director, cast, editing and cinematography that’s fine too…) and they will come.
hmmm, a film about a wife killing self-deceiver, all in a pg-13 logic shell-game that isn’t very braced with action, just exposition (a still from blue velvet?!?!?). holy-mother: that’s the best hollywood can offer this summer?
Stop being cynical for the sake of it. Compared what Hollywood usually offers, I’ll happily take Inception.
Nikki, what’s with all the Inception spoilers that have been posted lately? It’s only been released in a handful of countries so far but your site has a global reach. I’ve stopped reading a number of sites in the past for this reason and I don’t want deadline to be the next.
When Hollywood makes well written original stories people will come and see them.
Inception is a brilliant thriller.
