Starz’s acquired big-budget miniseries The Pillars of the Earth got off to a respectable start by Starz standards. The first two hours of the 8-hour mini drew 423,000 viewers on Friday. Not a lot to compare the ratings performance to as Starz is just now making inroads in the event longform programming. But Pillars finished competitively to the premiere of Starz’s breakout series hit Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which broke the pay cable network’s debut ratings record when it pulled 553,000 viewers earlier this year. It did much better than Starz’s other scripted offerings: for example, now defunct scripted drama Crash averaged 185,000 for its second season premiere and the recently canceled comedy Party Down averaged 74,000 viewers for its finale. The Pillars opener attracted 267,000 more viewers on Encore, with the total viewership expected to hover over 1 million in cume/DVR/VOD viewership.

For what it’s worth, I subscribed to Starz on Thursday just so I could see this. Knowing Torchwood is coming up didn’t hurt either.
Does Starz factor in Netflix viewers AT ALL? I don’t know anyone who watches Starz programming on TV, but dozens who watch on Netflix, including myself. Seems illogical for the network to not factor in those viewers when they intentionally partnered with Netflix to *gain* viewers.
Party Down will be missed… I may have been the only one who watched it.
Dont’t fret Beetlegeuse. Me and the wife loved Party Down.
Personally I thought Starz had a quality season with its programming. Even Gravity was likeable. Ironically, the network is havings its rough patches, cancelling its comedies, and of course, Spartacus being up in the air.
I would say, Starz network, Don’t give up. I am watching your network more because of your quality shows.
For what it’s worth: I loved both “Party Down” and “Gravity” — sorry that Starz did not give them a chance to gain larger audiences. I’ve dvr’ed “Pillars” and plan to watch over the weekend. Cast looks fantastic. Keep up the good work Starz…just don’t go by traditional ratings — loads of us tape, dvr, order from Netflix, or watch on Starz on Demand.
Look at the bigger picture.
“The Jockey” better do something stronger than this or Liberty will never give him the money for the rest of his programming. Good luck!
will Starz play the entire miniseries of Pillars of the Earth again Will it be available on DVD?
I love this show!!!! Please tell me there will be more seasons!!!
Just finished watching the season finale…..Great adaptation of the book and the cast couldn’t of done a better job. Any chance of a second season??
PLEASE BRING SEASON 2, I LOVED THIS MINI SERIES. PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!
I enjoyed the historical aspects of this mini-series. I’m really hoping that there will be a SEASON 2…
I just recently discovered this series. I began watching it on Starz. For a month, I was glued to the T.V. I am an artist, and was immediately drawn towards Jack. They had him covered up in a rob, looking down, not showing his features in the beginning. A mute, of sorts. You learn he is an old soul, a genius, creative ideas, a beautiful mysterious creature that can melt you with his eyes alone…he was a true artist… Throughout the series, you fall in love with Jack. You see his kindness, His genuine generosity towards humanity. …he is a beautiful person inside… his soul pouring out of his eyes…very creative acting and directing…. They walk you through his soul, you feel what he feels, you love what he loves…You dont want anything to happen to him… I get chills just thinking of the powerful way this series captured you. All the characters were amazing…I mean simply Brilliant… I was lost into their world. This movie is powerful. It is intense. Other directors should study this movie. It was realistic, as if I was peasant in the streets of Kingbrigde. Kudos to all the people who created this film. I am highly impressed. So many wonderful values. So many wholesome ideas. Dark secrets,Human emotion… Life realistic……it was highly intense, it was beautiful in every aspect. My life has been inspired, by a simple movie. Thank you. sincerly cristy
