ABC’s original scripted series Scoundrels (0.7 rating/2 share) and The Gates (0.9/3) both posted double-digit declines in the 18-49 demo from last week, 13% and 10% respectively, hitting all-time lows. Once again first-run scripted shows were the lowest-rated for the night, with Scoundrels and Fox’s Sons of Tucson original (0.6/2) at 7 PM. CBS’ Big Brother (2.3/8) at 8PM, the only other original entertainment option on broadcast, was the top-rated program for the night, down 4% from its Sunday premiere last week. Fox won the night in adults 18-49 on the strength of its animated comedy repeats, led by back-to-back episodes of Family Guy (2.0/6, 2.1/6) at 9 PM and 9:30 PM.

I think there’s a typo in the story… You referred to these as “original scripted series…”
“The Gates” is a great show that I look forward to every week. Some people havent tried it because many would like it if they tried it for the first time.
I agree, I think people would like it if they tried the show. Many people are so burned by the networks…why get involved in a show even if its good, if its only going to be canceled in a few weeks. Tv networks are going to get screwed in the end for not supporting shows and giving them time to build audiences…some audiences build by word of mouth which takes a little time.
I agree 100%
I totally agree with you. It has been years since I’ve watched a dramatic series weekly, and look forward to it. There were twists and surprises weekly. I’m posting tonight because I was trying to find out if it had been cancelled and why. It has to be because not many watched to begin with. I hope ABC will bring it back. The casting was SUPERB … new actors to me. I am disappointed.
I agree!! I think most people think vampires and think silly, not real like. But the fact is, it is very believable and the show i look forward to every sunday. Do i agree 10:00 is a little too late, but well worth it. People have to give it a shot. There is so many avenues this show can take to make it interesting….I LOVE THE GATES
I so totally agree, the Gates is awesome. I would put it on par with HBO’s true blood with a PG 13 rating of course. This show is awesome and ABC would be follish to cancel after one season, word of mout is traveling about this show. I went to Facebook and signed the petition to kep this show. I encourage others to do the same. I can guarentee if this show gets a second season ratings wil go up. Butb ABC stands for Already Been Cancelled so they don’t give a show a chance to pick up momentum. I love this show and I will hate ABC if they cancel it
I was was so disappointed to find out that The Gates and Scoundrels was cancelled!! Especially The Gates I am a huge fan of supernatural show esecially vampire and werewolf shows. I think The Gates has alot of potential if given the oppurtunity to play out. I tottaly agree with Olivia we viewers are getting burned from networks who satart a series and then thake it off the air…. over the last few years there have been some good vampire show that have been on for a season or two and then cancelled such as moonlight , bloodties , blades the series etc. it is getting so that I don’t want to even start watching a new series when they come out! Why would I want to start watching a series only to have it canceeled. \i find this very discouraging!
Unlike the cable networks like USA or TNT, I think most people are assuming that shows like The Gates or Scoundrels or even Persons Unknown are just trash that wasn’t good enough to air in the Fall since they are airing in the summer.
As huge David James Elliott fan – no surprise I like the show Scoundrels. In my opinion ABC over buzzed the premiere and then didn’t advertise enough to ‘develop’ a repeat audience. Of the 4 episodes that have aired episode 2 was the weakest and I believe led to the extremely low numbers of ep 3. Add that to the lack of promos and you get low ratings. Snowball down a hill – lower numbers from ep 3 even less promos and … ep 4 struggles. My opinion – ep 4 has been the best yet. Too bad folks didn’t stick around to see it – they missed a great hour of TV.
It’s not surprising that an Elliot fan likes the show, but given the lack of good writing, acting or story, it’s also not surprising that the show is tanking.
Say it ain’t so…
ABC bombing out?
Gads – I hope they keep this show going It’s great fun to watch – it has good writer4s, comedy, romance, lust and drama – and GREAT looking people! What else could anyone want?
Good to find “Sons of Tucson” still hanging in, even if precariously. Give it a better time slot, Fox! Have some faith…
At the moment:
ABC Comedy: great instincts and a willingness to take big risks
ABC Drama: Stuck in 2004-2005 where everything has to be a variation on Lost, Grey’s or Housewives
Time to bring in some new execs.
They did today.
No.
Surprised? No, Scoundrels sucks! Tried to get into it cause of Virginia Madsden, but its just a horrible show. Elliott as her husband sucks, and I’m totally laughing at the fact that this so-called original show (based on New Zealand’s Outrageous Fortune) gets beat, and badly I might add, by nothing but re-runs that the other networks are throwing out there. If Scoundrels was any good, being new episodes, it should win the night handily. Keep waiting for the news that ABC finally got the message and has cancelled this piece of crap.
I do like The Gates, Sunday night at 10 isn’t a good timeslot for it, and do hope ABC will give The Gates more of a chance. Realistically I think it will end up like Scoundrels, tossed in the garbage.
Right from the get go I thought it was a dumb idea to have The Gates on Sunday right when the best Vampire show out there is in full swing on HBO.
I give props to ABC with trying some-what new stuff with Scoundrels to go along with jejune stuff like Rookie Blue.
Scoundrels is a good show, original, and don’t try to compare it to “the Riches” totally different concept. Come on let’s try some new stuff, reality is great and all, (for people who have no life of their own, I guess it’s fun to watch some staged “reality” of a bunch of losers) and that’s fine if that’s what you like, but expand a little, try something with some real stars!
I’m still so fed up with ABC over their mishandling of “Eastwick” that I have no interest in watching any other programs on ABC.
Scoundrels was touted as being based on the NZ show “Outrageous Fortune”, but the pilot was just an awkward carbon copy of the original, line for line in most scenes. I’ve already seen Outrageous Fortune and don’t need to see it again with different actors, so I abandoned it early. Have they managed to diverge from the original Kiwi series at all? My boredom with ABC outweighs my willingness to waste more time there and find out.
NOT watching ABC’s new series’ is the only way to get across the message that if they continue to cancel good series as they have in the past, nobody will trust them ever again. Lots of us will not watch any series on ABC until it has been there for 2 years. Period. Good luck ABC. You have a nasty lesson to be learned.
Agree completely.
Totally agree…ABC’s actions of quickly canceling shows is enough to make me never want to invest in watching their shows.
Between The Gates, Scoundrels and Rookie Blue, it’s nice to see ABC making a concerted effort at establishing a true summer schedule. I’ve seen the pilot for The Gates — it’s a blast. Rookie Blue doesn’t quite interest me, but since it’s already been renewed, I’ll give it a try. Scoundrels is the big question mark and I won’t be able to watch it on my backed-up DVR until after I get back from Comic-Con. That said . . .
It’s great that even though I haven’t seen it, Rookie Blue has been renewed. With summer having had the reputation for the place where dead shows go to get cremated — err, burnt off, renewing Rookie is a great sign of the summer’s untapped TV-watching potential. Show a firm committment toward the programming and eventually — not now, but within a couple of years — viewers will start believing that ABC and/or any other of the broadcast networks really mean it when they say that they want to have a year-’round programming schedule.
In that vein if you’ll pardon the pun, I think that ABC should renew The Gates for a second season next summer. The show works creatively — and moreover, it will likely do well on DVD due to its genre content. It’s also outscoring Scoundrels in the ratings by more than 20%, which means that Scoundrels may be dragging it down as a lead-in.
In this context, renewing The Gates alongside Rookie Blue can only strengthen audience perception that ABC is interested in carrying real, competitive new programming during the summer. IMO, ABC should think of the two shows as loss-leaders in terms of the ratings — as long as they work creatively, they should stick with the shows almost regardless of the ratings. In return, ABC gets a strong foundation on which to build a recognizable slate of breezy summer fare.

Rob, I agree with most of what you say, but in regards to Scoundrels I think it’s pretty good, good actors, good script and it’s up against pretty tough competition True Blood and Army Wives.
I wish it could come back for a 2nd season, but I’m sure it won’t.
If you aim low –Rookie Blue — your writing can suck. You’re writing crap for idiots.
If you aim high — as Scoundrels seemed to do — your writing can’t suck. Unfortunately, it did suck.
Flaccid, unfocused.
As for The Gates: so very, very sick of vampires and werewolves. Knott’s Landing with vampires? No. Just . . . no.
“Scoundrels’ gets better every episode–last weeks was really great. I will definitely continue to watch. ABC should promote it cause it just gets better and better. ‘The Gates’ doesn’t interest me, and ‘Rookie’ seems way cliche. At least ‘Scoundrels’ has some decent acting.
Thank you, finally someone that gets it! Look what Scoundrels is paired up against True Blood and Army Wives. These same people who don’t like Scoundrels are probably th esame ones who refused to support Jericho
“The Gates” feels as if it was written by a committee: “We need a vampire show. And add some teens, like that other show. And maybe some witches and werewolves. Make the witch blond, like the one on that old soap. Oh, and how about a succubus.” Not only does it lack originality, but they created vampires without passion. Compare the actors in The Gates with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in “Interview with a Vampire.” And they wrote scenes in which the characters actions don’t make sense in light of their previous experience. Is there any reason to even care about the characters? Boring.
I have to totaly disagree with you here, The actors in The Gates are doing a fantastic job. Dylan has allot of emotion, and his emotion shines through his character. Look at his face when he says to claire in last night episode, ” the bond may have been broken but your still my wife”.
Look at her face and his. You can see his pain, that kind of pain only comes when you love someone.
emotion this show is full of emotion.
I hope that ABC brings back The Gates…it is the best show that I have seen in a long time. Please do not cancel!!! In fact, bring it back to the fall line-up or a mid-season replacement to begin again in the fall 2011 line up. It is great!!!! The best thing since Buffy, Angel, & Forever Knight!!!
I totally agree except that i don’t remember forever knight. They need to give this a chance.
im really hoping for a season two of the gates. it’s summer of course it’s not going to have super high ratings but i would LOVE to habve another season. That show is GREAT. Vampire stuff is over done but this show is different.
Being a self proclaimed Vampire fanatic, I loved the show True Blood and eagerly look forward to it every Sunday. When the Gates previewed, I was totally sold. My wife and I eagerly look forward to watching both shows each Sunday and I tell her after each Gates episode that “The Gates” is the better show. The Gates keeps us in suspense and there is always something going on. It’s borderline mysteries keep us guessing until the end. There are so many characters who we know have a secret and we cant wait until it is exposed. The series is very well written and very addictivie. The only drawback to the series is the timeslot. Sunday, 10:00 p.m. (Eastern), is very late when most people are getting rested for the following work day. Even still, I will continue to watch it and just grab and extra cup of coffe the next day as penance. Please do not cancel this show. You have a strong following. Just focus on the timeslot and you will win an award, lol
I am really enjoying The Gates and truly hope that it isnt cancelled or more to the point that they show all the 13 ep that have been done.I think this show has only started and there is so much more that can be done within the plot of this show so please DONT CANCEL THE GATES ABC!!!!
I normally watch HBO series, and have stopped watching ABC, CBS and NBC crap shows (which I have to admit) I was getting into Happy Town, and they cancelled it. I thought I would give The Gates a try – but I really think the show is BORING, with too much going on. First, I don’t like the fact that Vampires wear sunblock so they can walk around in daylight and when the werewolves change (or transform as they say in the show) their eyes change, take off their jacket or unbuttoning their shirt and then they go running in the woods (whoopie!) – Now I enjoy True Blood very agressive show, something that keeps you wanting to watch more of. True Blood time goes by so fast before you know it, 50 minutes is up – but The Gates, drags, and each minute seems like an hour.
DO NOT CANCEL SCOUNDRELS!!!!!! Yes is was kinda slow in the begging but after the first few episodes….I really liked it. The gates…eh not so much. Didnt have much interest.
Scoundrels! Yes Thank YOU
At first I wasn’t wild about the Scoundrels. But by the end of the first eight episodes, I thought it was really quite good and found myself looking forward to seeing it. I think it just needed some time to warm up. Excellent season finally.
The Gates is another story. What a mess of a show. An obvious attempt to ride the vampire band wagon. Oh and throw in every other creature just in case something else becomes popular.
Thanks Cassie, Scoundrels is a very good light hearted show! Better every episode!
Omg scoundrels, SO good!!!!!!!!! DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW!!!!! Gates was ok, but nothing super entertaining
