Third time proved to be the charm for A&E whose third original series, The Glades, debuted with 3.6 million viewers last night, posting the network’s most-watched original drama series telecast ever. The Glades also broke records in the adults 18-49 and 25-54 demographics, delivering 1.4 million viewers and 1.2 million viewers, respectively. Combined with the encore airing, The Glades was watched by a total of 5.1 million viewers last night and grew by 38% from its lead-in. A&E’s first two original scripted dramas from the network’s recent re-entry into the genre, The Cleaner and The Beast, debuted with 2.6 million viewers and 2.4 million viewers, respectively. “The fact that The Glades was able to break through in a crowded summer landscape against heavy competition is a testament to the quality of the show and the incredible talent and performance of the show’s lead Matt Passmore,” said Bob DeBitetto, president & GM of A&E and BIO Channel. The solid showing is also certain to reaffirm A&E’s new creative direction toward lighter procedurals with The The Glades and recent pickup Breakout Kings.

“The fact that The Glades was able to break through in a crowded summer landscape against heavy competition is a testament to the quality of the show…”
What the hell competition? The Gates on ABC, a rerun of Cold Case on CBS, a rerun of America’s Got Talent on NBC, local programming on Fox, and with the NBA and NHL playoffs over, and the World Cup ending earlier in the day, no significant sporting event.
Well, there’s also Lifetime’s successful series and the inexplicably successful Next Foodnetwork Star along with True Blood on HBO. Not exactly a night of nothing to watch.
Anyway, I know this series wasn’t exactly a critical darling but I enjoyed it. It’s not great, or even original, television but there’s some potential for an interesting series.
What competition? Ever hear of cable? Sunday night is a cable battle royale.
True Blood? Entourage? Design Star? Army Wives? Ochocinco? Drop Dead Diva? Dolly’s World? Kourtney & Chloe? Hung? Next Food Network Star? Top Shot?
3.6 million? Ugly Betty got canceled with ratings higher than that. These are numbers that would thrill the WB. But ABC??? IDK!
A paltry 3.6 million viewers is not exactly world-beating.
It would be nice (but will never happen) if Nellie stopped just copy/pasting press releases and did some analysis.
It would be nice to know, for example, how Glades did against USA’s Summer Lineup, the Cable big guys. IIRC, Burn Notice, Monk, and Psych have all done 7-8 million, about 2.5X what Glades did.
Yeah, that takes more than a few minutes of copy/paste, but that’s the kind of analysis I expect from Nikki (who usually gives it, movie-wise).
It would also be nice to know how A&E does head to head with USA wrt demos. Presumably DHD has a Neilson account, so that should be fairly easy. It should only take say, half an hour to write the post vs. 10 minutes.
Besides True Blood, you’re just naming shows, including ones not on opposite of Glades. If crap like the Kardashians and Ochocinco are considered competition to gloat over standing apart from, that’s not saying much.
Congratulations Gary Randall. Hard to find a nicer guy in showbiz.
