ABC’s Wipeout had the edge in its second week against CBS’ Big Brother at 8 PM on Thursday. After Big Brother narrowly won last week (2.5/9 to 2.4/8 after being tied at 2.4/9 in the fast nationals), Wipeout (2.5/9) last night was up a tenth, while Big Brother (2.3/9) was down two tenths from its season premiere last week. But the live eviction Big Brother show was up double digits from the comparable broadcast last year. Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (1.9/6, down 10%) also had its results show last night but the its ratings were probably affected from the fact that the elimination was a foregone conclusion after a dancer (Ashley) was injured.
Meanwhile, Wipeout‘s ratings uptick was followed by more gains for the network’s scripted drama Rookie Blue (1.7/6, up 13%) and docu series ABC News Boston Med (1.3/4, up 18%). ABC won the night in adults 18-49 (1.8/6), while CBS, which aired drama repeats after Big Brother, was tops in viewers (7.1 million) NBC aired all-reruns.

There is really nothing special about ROOKIE BLUE and yet it works. What is it? The cast? Directing? Editing?
No, maybe it’s just the predictable feel-good stories. While I think that series like Lost or Mad Men are great, I think broadcast networks (except for CBS) have lost focus with putting out too many sophisticated (and mostly expensive in execution) series. They’re copying the cable networks and it’s not working. They should be broadcasting again and not narrowcasting. That’s what the cablers are good for.
Narrowcasting – I like that!
That’s the magic of Missy Peregrym, my friend.
Yeah, I’m a woman and I would say she’s pretty likable. (Didn’t think much of her one way or the other on Reaper though…)
What’s a Missy Peregrym?
Nice to see Wipeout doing so well in its third season. It is a rare show that my whole family enjoys together.
The only reason these scripted summer shows have any interest to anyone beyond niche audiences ( one andf a half million 18-49 viewers is so narrow its claustrophobic) is because ABC and NBC are so laughably pathetic in the fall. If a show with those kinds of numbers can get picked up for fall, or more precisely are waiting in the wings for when the Middle and the miserably disappointing Cougartown are finally yanked,it just shows the decline of ABC and NBC is irreeversible.
