Coinstar’s Redbox announced today it has started rolling out Blu-ray titles with availability at approximately 13,300 DVD rental kiosks nationwide. Redbox will rent Blu-ray Discs at $1.50 per night plus tax and the company expects to have availability across its network of approximately 23,000 kiosk locations by the fall.

2 weeks ago, the local Redbox near me had Green Zone on BD for rent. I don’t know the cost, but it was the first time I had seen BD in Redbox.
This is great news! I don’t know anyone who wants to shell out $30 to buy those overpriced dvds especially since they will be obsolete in a few years. But $1.50… that’s about what their worth.
Rented one from a kiosk outside the 7-11 I live next to. THey have had Blu-Rays for about a week now.
Personally, Blu-Ray is a no-go with me. It’s not the quality, it’s the price. I simply can’t afford it. Years ago when dvd’s first came out, I had the money to switch from tapes to dvd’s – i.e., buying the player, replacing all my old movie tapes and, of course, buying a television that accommodated dvd’s. But that’s no longer the case. I just don’t have the money any longer – and this situation isn’t going to change for at least another year, possibly 2 or 3. So a Blu-ray player is out (and of course so is a new television).
Sorry, folks. It’s not the quality, it’s the cash. I no longer have the latter.
This is extremely bad news. Companies like Redbox are actually destroying film.
Redbox is not destroying film, it is the studios lack of foresight and innovation that is destroying film. One only needs to look at the record industry and it’s initial refusal to jump on the digital train. Well, you know what? The train left the station anyway, without the record industry. The studios are trying to push blu-ray and the general public does not give a shit. The film industry can either learn from the record industry’s mistakes or join them on the same downward spiral.
