EXCLUSIVE: Their first picture together, Eat Pray Love, based on the Elizabeth Gilbert bestseller, isn’t in theaters this summer until August 13th so Sony Pictures doesn’t know how it will fare yet. Nevertheless, the studio just made one of the year’s biggest pitch deals, paying Glee co-creator/executive producer Ryan Murphy $2.5 million to write an untitled star vehicle for Julia Roberts, and another $2.5 million to direct it. CAA made Murphy’s $5M deal.
In the romantic comedy, Julia will play a working woman married to a stay-at-home husband. She loses her job, their roles are reversed, and she has to adjust to motherhood. Plan B’s Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner will produce with Murphy. Pitt and Gardner also produced Eat Pray Love in which Murphy directed Roberts. That pic was put in turnaround by Paramount with Julia Roberts attached, then picked up by Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal who paid Julia $10M to play a woman who walks away from her marriage to travel the world and find herself.
I hear Pascal made this new deal because Murphy and Roberts worked so well together, and because Pascal likes what she has in Eat Pray Love even though it’s a one-quadrant movie (older females). Murphy returns to Glee but will start writing soon in hopes of putting the new picture in production next year when he has an “out” in his TV contract enabling him to direct a film. I’ve previously reported that Murphy is also on the short list of filmmakers who’ve met for the movie adaptation of the hit stage musical Wicked. Busy guy.

When will they learn that Julia Roberts name has no box office pull.
great actress, but 10 mil?,
they should save 9.8 mil and cast Megan Fox,…just kidding.
But Julia just doesn’t get people excited to see a movie anymore
Umm no it doesn’t get U excited
No box office pull? I’d beg to differ. Let’s look at some of Roberts’ last wide-release movies -
Valentine’s Day – $215,771,698
Duplicity – $78,146,652
Charlie Wilson’s War – $119,000,410
Closer – $115,505,027
Ocean’s Twelve – $362,744,280
Mona Lisa Smile – $141,337,989
Maybe she doesn’t hold the same appeal in the United States, but worldwide she is still a massive pull, so its actually very clever for studios to sign her to these movies to increase their worldwide cume.
People are still excited to see Julia’s movies, especially when she’s in romantic comedy form. The only reason she’s not as popular now as she was before is that she’s chosen more challenging roles and stepped away from rom-coms. I bet my house that she can still pack theaters – especially in rom-com form and I also bet that Eat Pray Love is going to do quite well.
Mr Mom in reverse.
Murphy’s done very well in TV but he’s unproven as a big-picture director (just check out Running with Scizzors). He has trouble making his material accessable to large audiences. Big big risk for Sony.
that good Idea
What about NORMAL HEART?
Is Streisand out? Murphy in? Julia Roberts as the doctor?
Julia needs to back in Mike Nichols arms..
this sounds exactly like that proposed Debra Messing pilot from last year at NBC that never got off the ground. Same writers?
The “Glee” backlash will only get stronger as we get closer to the Emmy’s. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again…Murphy is overrated. Does he have talent? Yes. Is he as talented as the hype suggests? No. The show isn’t original nor is it all that creative. He, of all people, should know that isn’t even a musical. If auto-tuned karaoke with good lighting is now constituted as a musical, then I need to hit the studio asap and get some recording started. The show’s been down hill since the 2nd episode. Let’s see how long Fox decides to drag out the already dead horse…
unproven? running with scissors was a train wreck. thought that proved it all.
Meh. Storyline sounds really retro and uninspired.
Agree with Snarky! And there’s no way they can top the genius of that film, switcheroo or not. I’m already bored and have zero interest in seeing this film.
Oh well…at least Aniston wasn’t offered the role. Something in my film lover’s heart dies a little when I hear Rachel’s been asked to make yet another film.
Where’s Pretty Woman 2? Or the remake?
i tot JLS are supposed 2 be in ‘new years eve’… r tay r arent tay??
wow a 1 quadrant movie. older females. but how old? are we talking 50? i really wonder how this film will do. i think javier bardem married penelope cruz to try to ramp up the p.r. on this baby.
OMG. A woman has to be a mom! What an original idea!!!
another julia flop will ensue
You are right Kristen, the best Julia Roberts movie was Mike Nichol’s film version of “Closer”. Roberts probably gave her best performance in that film.
Every time I read one of those articles regarding Hollywood finally getting it and putting the brakes on idiotic above the line costs, there’s another story like this. It’s no wonder 70% of the films they make lose money. The only real question is why stockholders never make a stink.
Eat, Pray, Love will probably do “okay” but no way it’s gonna be a huge hit. It’s a Diane Lane flick with Julia Roberts playing Diane Lane.
It’s like you people were born yesterday. The movie only cost about $50 million to make. Sony will make all of that back and more very easily, and internationally? It will be massive.
I love Julia and Jennifer and will watch any movie they are in….at least once.
Considering that motherhood has become Julia’s self-proclaimed first priority, I imagine that from a very personal place she will bring more than just her always-winning smile and laughter to the new role. Does sound like Mr. Mom in reverse, but that just brings back warm fuzzies about watching Michael Keaton and Teri Garr back then. I like to imagine Julia to be one of those celebrities who spends her money humbly, privately and wisely and therefore do not begrudge Hollywood practices and wish her nothing but the best.
don’t forget Erin Brockevich..however u spell it. that movie was one of Julia’s BEST performances if not THE BEST. And Julia Roberts has never stopped amazing people, it’s not always the actors as it is the story line, directing or other possible problems.
I’ve loved Julia Roberts since Mystic Pizza; Ryan Murphy is clearly a talent – massive fan of Nip/Tuck and more; if the two are inspired by one another and those around feel the same, you can bet Eat/Pray/Love will be a success, as will another vehicle they would work on. Hats off to all involved;
I can’t stand Julia Roberts’ phoney laugh and attitude..she appears full of herself. I loved the book, however. Just wished they had chosen someone else. more authentic and with more real heart.
OK, hold it!
1.Since when is it a crime to be a Mom & talk about the joys of being one?!
2.Julia, for all her supposed inadequacies, has grossed closed to $1.5 billion, yes billion, for the above 6 films listed…lest we forget “Erin Brockavich,” for she which she won a OSCAR. In fact, since becoming a Mom, she appears/feels far more authentic in interviews & her films.
3.Films by & large don’t usually encompass the fullness of description & feeling as the original manuscript, as screenplays must be written economically(word count,etc.).
4.As “Eat Pray Love,” is still sought after by book buyers & libraries, & re-read by book clubs & taken on holidays to block out for all the noise we face each day… I find it hard to believe that people will not suspend their jaded beliefs, albeit for a mere 2 hrs., in pursuit of alternative outlook/escape that may give them an oz. of joy that could possibly open their minds to the minutest of life change(s).
And I won’t see this film till tomorrow. Read the bloody book & quit complaining!
Julia never deserved that Oscar. There were four better actresses that year.
I think Julia and Murphy deserve each other. It’s a toss-up as to who has less talent.
