EXCLUSIVE: Seth Grahame-Smith, who made his Hollywood entry writing novels that put a macabre twist to literary classics and historical figures, has just snagged the high profile job of writing the new draft of Dark Shadows. The Tim Burton-directed adaptation of the 60s daytime serial will star Johnny Depp as the vampire Barnabas Collins. The film is slated to begin production in January at Warner Bros. Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and Graham King’s GK Films are producing.

Warner Bros has been trying for several years to get to the starting line on the movie adaptation of the TV series that ran on ABC from 1966-71 and had legions of fans frightened by the moody and atmospheric storyline. (Tim Burton May Push Back ‘Dark Shadows’ Start Date) Barnabas Collins (played by Jonathan Frid) was the central figure in the groundbreaking supernatural soap. As for Tim Burton’s version, John August was the first writer hired to script the project, based on the Dan Curtis-created characters. Grahame-Smith will be writing a new take under Burton. He got the job on the basis of his own bestselling novel, Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Burton and Timur Bekmambetov bought that project out of their own money as producers, and I hear that Bekmambetov is likely to make the film his next directing effort.
Lionsgate has optioned Grahame-Smith’s book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, with David O. Russell circling as director, and Natalie Portman starring as Elizabeth Bennett and producing a film that injects bloodthirsty zombies into Jane Austen’s mannered literature.
Grahame-Smith also co-created with pal David Katzenberg the MTV series The Hard Times of RJ Berger. Grahame-Smith’s repped by WME.

burton still casting his dear lover??? OMG
You’re surprised? And is there anything wrong with that?
Yes, YES there is something wrong with that!
From what I understand, Jonathan Frid, is quite happy with the choice of Depp as Barnabas. So are we, Jonathan’s fans.
I think Depp is all wrong.
IM GLAD TO HEAR THAT GOOD WRITING AND DIRECTING WILL BE GOING INTO THE JOHNNY DEPP DARK SHADOWS MOVIE BECAUSE I WANT THIS FILM TO REALLY SURPASS THE TWILIGHT SAGA, AND IN ORDER TO DO THAT YOU CANT JUST REMAKE HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS AND THE TV SOAP , YOU NEED TO BRING SOMETHING NEW AND SURPRISING TO THIS FILM, EVEN IF THE DIE HARD DS FANS DISAGREE, ITS 2010 AND THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF WATCHING THE SAME OLD STORY OVER AND OVER AGAIN. ITS NOT WRITTEN IN STONE THAT THE STORYLINE MUST NOT CHANGE TO WEAR THE DARK SHADOWS NAME , LETS START A WHOLE NEW LEGION OF FANS WITH THIS FILM. IM LOOKING FOWARD TO WATCHING THIS MOVIE NOT KNOWING WHAT THE WHOLE STORY BEFORE I EVEN SIT IN THE THEATER LETS NOT MAKE ANOTHER FAILURE LIKE THE 90S REMAKE. THIS SHOW WAS MY FAVORITE OF ALL TIME , I DONT WANT IT TO FAIL
I agree
Glad To Hear Dark Shadows Project by Warner Bros. Is Making
Literary Progress From This Adaptation. The Story Lines Are
Breathtaking, As Was Mr. Curtis’ 1991 Revival. Oppulent.
Ack! The 1991 version, although well-written and well-cast (esp. Ben Cross), left the ending with its, well, hind end out in the cold. I’ve never forgiven them for that….
The network ended the 1991 series, not the writers, producers, etc. It just couldn’t compete at the time and NBC pulled the plug too soon. I would love to see (or atleast read) what the 1st episode of season 2 was supposed to be because that was such a cliff hanger!
Depp’s a natural Goth! Please, please make it 3D this time. There should be a twist to this one that the others did not have. Like, why does he have to die? Why not make it open to a sequel? Witches and vampires in holographic images would be awesome.Thank you for making it no matter what the outcome.
80-year-old Jonathon Frid, the original and forever Barnabas Collins, is appearing at the Vista Theater in Silverlake this Friday at 12:30 to set his hand prints in the forecourt, just before a 40th anniversary screening of “House of Dark Shadows”.
Congratulations Mr. Frid aka Barnabas Collins. I used to rush home to turn on the TV and watch Dark Shadows. Recently I have watched many shows on DVD. Love them all! Thanks for doing such a fine job acting. Wishing you all the best.
Many congratulations to Frid who cannot be replaced. But Johnny Depp will do you justice. I think it only appropriate that someone like him play your role.
You changed my fiction world forever, Frid!
…and apparently he’s a great guy. Nice to hear.
Attend the Dark Shadows Festival at the Burbank Marriott this weekend . . . we will all be there!
Kathryn Scott
It’s so great that you can all be there to celebrate! Wish I could, too.
Frid, like Peter Cushing, is one of the all time great character actors. I always thought he would’ve played a killer Sherlock Holmes, but it never happened. I shudder at the thought of Depp’s flamboyant unsubtle take on the role.
Wouldn’t Frid have made a splendid Sherlock Holmes? Wow, that got me thinking of other roles he could have played like Sydney Carton and Mr. Rochester. Oh, well… I agree with what you said about Depp. I just hope that they don’t go all “absurd” and make this like an Ed Wood thing–like a semi-documentary on all the things that went wrong with the daytime production. We already know what went wrong, because it was virtually live (thank goodness that it was recorded onto videotape), and we have everyone telling us how “campy” it was. I don’t think that they were aiming for “camp”; it seemed that the writers and actors were taking it all very seriously. Sure, we are more sophisticated today…almost to the point of sedation, if you judge from what passes for drama these days. If I see one more cadaver cut-up show, lawyer, doctor, or detective-themed show, I’m going to chunk the television set. If I want grisly and disgusting, I’ll turn on the local news at 5:00 for my diet of trauma. As far as technical goes, some of the special effects on those SyFy (siffy?)programs seldom project as well as the ones on “Dark Shadows”.
If you want suspense, whether real orimagined, you really should watch “Ghost Adventures” or “Ghost Hunters”. It’s what you don’t see that makes it interesting!
If Depp gives Barnabas the same darkly-driven quality he displayed in ‘Sweeney Todd’ he’ll make an excellent vampire.
I’d be delighted if Johnny also gets a part in ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’. He’s too short and pretty for the title role, but he could be great casting for Henry Sturges, Edgar Allen Poe or John Wilkes Booth. The man can act!
It’s about time Johnny plays a role as a vampire,Fangbangers and Depp fans will definetly suck this up!!!cynthia
I have extremely high expectations for this film. In my opinion, this the dream team to bring Dan Curtis’ gothic soap opera to the big screen. I too remember running home from school so that I wouldn’t miss a single bone-chilling episode. Who better to play the role than someone who is obsessed with Barnabas Collins? Hopefully his obsession with the character and Tim Burton’s penchant for the macabre will translate into a solid film. Only two actresses could fill Joan Bennett’s shoes as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard—Helen Mirren or Judi Dench. Maybe Neil Patrick Harris or Jude Law as Roger Collins? Jobeth Williams or Susan Sarandon as Dr. Julia Hoffman? I can’t wait to find out who will be cast.
I really like your casting suggestions, especially Sarandon for Dr. Hoffmann. Jude Law would be a great Roger, but then doesn’t that make the Dames a little old for Elizabeth?
I can’t get to the Vista but I’ll be seeing Frid at the DS festival at the Burbank Marriott this weekend.
This could actually be pretty good. If it establishes a tone similar to Sleepy Hollow or Sweeney Todd then we could be looking at a pretty intense vampire flick. Burton’s not shy in spraying some cinematic blood. Depp as a vampire…Barnabus Collins no less? That’s just insane. In a good way.
Does anyone under 50 even remember that show?
I’m 23 and it’s possibly my favorite TV show. I introduced it to my boyfriend, age 21, and he loves it. Just off the top of my head I can think of 3 other friends — ages 23, 19 and 16 — who also enjoy it.
Technically speaking I guess we don’t “remember” it — but have you ever heard of reruns or Netflix??? SciFi network aired reruns of it throughout the 90s and into the 2000s.
When was the last time Mr. Burton based one of his films on an original idea?
Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Nightmare before Christmas, and many more. Not including many side projects he’s done and short films.
That depends on what you mean by “original idea”
Almost everything that anyone ever comes up with is influenced by something else, so it cannot really be called “original”.
However, if you mean “not an existing IP or an adaptation”, then those movies are, apart from the two shorts, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands (it was his own story), Ed Wood and Corpse Bride.
Ed Wood is debatable cos it’s a biopic, but it is not an adaptation of anything written per se, it is just a telling of his life.
Corpse Bride was co-directed with Mike Johnson.
@Lesley – Nightmare was produced by Burton. It was directed by Henry Selick.
The only fan letter I ever wrote was to Jonathon Frid. I was 10. I still love that man. A true actor and gentleman. Whenever anyone mentions Twilght (which I totally dig) I tell them Barnabas, Victoria and Quentin already rocked that story.
And the fan letter? In return, much to my delight, I received a 5×7 pic of “Barnabas” with his ring and cane. Awesome.
The old school were cool.
Attention all screenwriters who worked for many years to build your craft.
Fuck off – we prefer to give major assigments to those who have not bothered with such formalities.
love,
hollywood
It’s the writer who recommends the writing, not the other way around.
If Burton likes Grahame-Smith’s style enough to hire him, that is his prerogative.
AGAIN with Depp Mr. Burton?? Please. And I don’t mean that in a good way.
FYI…Johnny Depp purchased the rights to Dark Shadows and then brought the project to his best friend, Tim Burton. Burton and Depp make an awesome team! Johnny doesn’t like doing anything normal because anyone can do that. Tim is on the same page with him.
More Vampires? Johnny Depp in whiteface. It will make a lot of money. End of story.
FangBangers and Depp fans, like I said before r going to suck this up!!
too many vampires! Summit got their first, after Tom Cruise natch. Get a new grip on film plots. Oh, and we’ve had enough choirs as well.
Seth paid his dues plenty. And is outright talented and a damn fine guy. He deserves it. The good guy won here, make no mistake about it.
At last, good news about the DS movie. I think that Johnny Depp will make a great vampire and the perfect Barnabas. He will bring the brooding sex appeal to the role that is needed to reach those who didn’t/coundn’t watch the original tv show.
Love Dark Shadows and Jonathan Frid but I certainly wish someoe other than the Burton/Depp Siameese twins would direct/star. Dark Shadows and its fans deserves something fresher. I’m one of the few original fans who actually enjoyed the sort-lived reboot of the series in the 90s. I’ll be interested to see who is cast for Victoria Winters (please NOT Marion Cotillard or Megan Fox!) to Depp’s Barnabas. Ann Hathaway would be a decent choice as would Evangeline Lily or Kate Beckinsale.
what about Emmy Rossum as Victoria?
I love Kate Beckensale, but alas I fear she may be a little too old to play Victoria Winters. One of the other posters suggested Emmy Rossum in the role…I think she’d be great.
How about Kiera Knightly as Caroline Stoddard?
“When was the last time Mr. Burton based one of his films on an original idea?”
‘Corpse Bride’, 2005 (animated)
‘Big Fish’, 2003 (live action)
big fish was a book before
Yes, but nowhere near as well known as Burton’s other adapted books.
It’s not Burton making a film with Depp, it’s Depp making a film with Burton. Warner Bros and Depp’s company bought the film rights from Dan Curtis Productions, following the death of show creator Dan Curtis in 2006. Depp and WB recruited Burton, not the the other way around. Remember folks, Depp is a guy who was inspired into acting by Dark Shadows and Barnabas is his dream role….. so blaming Burton for Depp’s involvement is not only silly, it’s flat out wrong.
“When was the last time Mr. Burton based one of his films on an original idea?”
Who cares? There’s nothing new under the sun, anyway, and he tells a good story…’original’ doesn’t always mean ‘good.’ I serve up ‘Twilight’ as an example.
Depp as Barnabas + Tim Burton = yum. And in this film the vampires won’t sparkle, either.
I always prefer a movie to have some Depp (yes, that’s a deliberate pun.)
good one, tho – ha ha ha.
I remember Dark Shadows! And I’m only 24! The SCI FI channel used to play reruns all the time. Just like Everyone else, Barnabus and Angelique were my favorites. I hope this is a good reinterpretation. Is it still possible to get tickets to the meet and greet this weekend?
Just what we’ve been waiting for. Flaming Jack Sparrow prancing around as Barnabas Collins.
I’m sure he won’t do that. Depp plays his characters differently in every movie, and there’s no indication he or Burton intend to camp this one up.
Dear Tim and Johnny,
If you (or any of your lovely friends, family members, lovers or assistants) are reading this, I’d like to make one, necessary request. If at all possible, I would greatly appreciate if the technical aspect of this film were reminiscent of your “Ed Wood” days. Why? To be quite candid, your tendency to (over)use CGI is crippling your creative voice. Sure, a number of directors find liberation in such resources, however…George Lucas. Remember back in the days of “Sleepy Hollow” when your production team actually built the village and provided a lot of the effects on location? Glory days, friend. Glory days. Please understand, I’m not suggesting or even hoping you do this one in black and white (though that would be a nice touch). Rather, I would love it dearly if you considered….I dunno, going as CGI free as possible for this one. Just a thought. Hoping you’re doing well, I send you my deepest regards from the southern California heat wave….
