EXCLUSIVE: Seth Grahame-Smith, who made his Hollywood entry writing novels that put a macabre twist to literary classics and historical figures, has just snagged the high profile job of writing the new draft of Dark Shadows. The Tim Burton-directed adaptation of the 60s daytime serial will star Johnny Depp as the vampire Barnabas Collins. The film is slated to begin production in January at Warner Bros. Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and Graham King’s GK Films are producing.

Warner Bros has been trying for several years to get to the starting line on the movie adaptation of the TV series that ran on ABC from 1966-71 and had legions of fans frightened by the moody and atmospheric storyline. (Tim Burton May Push Back ‘Dark Shadows’ Start Date) Barnabas Collins (played by Jonathan Frid) was the central figure in the groundbreaking supernatural soap. As for Tim Burton’s version, John August was the first writer hired to script the project, based on the Dan Curtis-created characters. Grahame-Smith will be writing a new take under Burton. He got the job on the basis of his own bestselling novel, Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Burton and Timur Bekmambetov bought that project out of their own money as producers, and I hear that Bekmambetov is likely to make the film his next directing effort.
Lionsgate has optioned Grahame-Smith’s book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, with David O. Russell circling as director, and Natalie Portman starring as Elizabeth Bennett and producing a film that injects bloodthirsty zombies into Jane Austen’s mannered literature.
Grahame-Smith also co-created with pal David Katzenberg the MTV series The Hard Times of RJ Berger. Grahame-Smith’s repped by WME.

Hi Kathryn Leigh Scott!!! You were one of my first celebrity crushes.
Anyway, as a longtime Dark Shadows afficianado (I remember it during it’s original run on ABC), I am looking forward to Depp’s Dark Shadows bigtime! I have been reading about this for awhile, so I am thrilled shooting starts in January.
It will be interesting to see what approach Tim Burton takes with the material. The great thing about Dark Shadows is that it had a lot of storylines and I for one would LOVE to see the first film set in 1795 for a retelling of the vampire curse storyline with Angelique and Josette as central characters.
If they do this instead of the Maggie Evans storyline, they can jump ahead to present day and do the Barnabas/Maggie storyline as a sequel. This storyline has been done three times (at least), so I think doing Barnabas’ “origin story” would be the way to go…
…then again, I’m not the director.
the only cg fest he had was alice every thang else has been preety hands on
@MAURICE DEPALO I agree with you 100 % you on the right track…:)
I agree with you, Depp is passionate about this film, lets remember were dealing with isolated children on this matter, they have no passion, they see by public opinion, they have no idea whats it like to love, to feel passion for anything Tim is a great director, they know what they are doing, don’t worry little children they have respect for the original but the fact of the matter is, whats the since in making a movie if you cant add your on vision to it! That is the art of film making and story telling little ones!..
Dear Tim Burton,
Please make this movie suspenseful and creepy, even if it goes against the grain of most Hollywood movies. Black and white would be best to capture that atmosphere. The film should be long as well, probably 3 hours. Please cast Victoria as a no-name actress, that will have a believable innocence (similar to how you did in Alice). Please choose a beautiful mature actress to play Elizabeth. And let the actors mess up their lines once in a while. Have them stand towards the camera in dramatic scenes. Think cult classic when you’re making the movie, not typical Hollywood style. Don’t do it for the existing fans, make this movie to attract new fans, by really capturing the essence of DS.
There, I got my wish list in
love the old dark shadows(ran home from school to watch it) i feel they started it all there might not of been a buffy the vampire slayer, angel, twilight ,true blood, dark shadows paved the way for them all. love all the actors from that show also love everything j.depp does he is one of the best actors of all time.cannot wait to see the remake with him in it. and one day i wish to still meet Mr.Frid to all the people working on this project i wish you all the best Doreen
I question whether Seth Grahame-Smith (born in 1976) will be able to capture the true essence of Dark Shadows. If he is a fan of the show, then maybe, but if not, I do not see how he can do it justice. If the storyline is set in the present day, then it will likely be nothing more than a True Blood rehash. Dark Shadows just won’t work in today’s Twitter & cell phone world.
There has to be a spot for Christina Ricci in this – she’s perfect. And film it like Sweeney Todd – mostly black & white with a more realistic blood-red.
Note to Tim: please don’t do an Addams Family remake. And if you cast JD, it may be the first film of his I won’t see. Cheers!
Dark Shadows was my first obsession. It colored my world from the late sixties to the early seventies. I also ran home from school and watched all but a few of the first months of the original broadcasts. When we went on vacation and we were in the middle of nowhere my Father would arrange periodically to allow us to stop at a strangers house and ask if his son could watch their tv for a half hour just to catch up with Barnabas and the others. And people back then usually said yes. We drve by ABC studios in New York one summer(Im a Californian kid) to see a giant poster of Barnabas that read “Dark Shadows recorded here”. Un fortunately the Statue of Liberty and The Empire State Building won our bid for time that day. Now please since I have made my case as a Dark Shadows fan let me say that the one most important thing that Tim, Depp and even the fans need to insist on is the story ,or better stories.I dont want to preach but I have asked myself what attracts me to DS the most and it has to be the humanity of the charachters and the morals implied. Think of it this is and always was a story of Family and the dark things that can tear them apart. Barnabas gave in to a few minutes of lust with Agelique befor his Marriage to Josette. The consequences of this one act followed him thru 200 years and tore at all the family and friends he ever loved. WAs there redemtion in the,Was There? you saw the end, which actually was perfect, Barnabas ,with no explanation why ,had returned to take another victim,Poor Barnabas. To me this story touches the heart and has what all the new Vampire stories do not, truths about love and family. Please if anyone from the industry reads this, especially you johnny Keep what you loved about DS intact.
I too was an original DS fan back in the 60′s. I recently watched the 90′s remake on Netflix and thought although it missed on some levels, the Baranabas Character played by Ben Cross was near perfect. His strong will made him both frightening and tragic. His old world sensibilities really came through (as in, it is OK to cane your servant). The character showed great tenderness as well as frightful anger and the always present mask veiling his true thoughts and intentions.I am hoping for a serious take on this movie which focuses on the character development and addresses the themes of lost love, the consequences of betrayal and the long reaching tentacles of our actions across time.
GREAT TIMING….for a DARK SHADOWS remake!
I just watched the trailer for this film and i’m really perturbed by it. I was hoping for a “serious” remake and not some ridiculous slapstick comedy. I should’ve known it would be this way with Seth Grahame-Smith writing. He is the worst. Is this what is being passed for good writing these days??? I was sooo looking forward to seeing this too. This was a very bad move on their part and i hope it blows up in their faces. Sorry Tim and Johnny…ya pissed me off.
