New ‘Spider-Man’ Latest Twist To Reboot Tired Franchise
CULVER CITY, Calif., July 1, 2010 – After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.
Today’s confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.
The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.
On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”
Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, “Spider-Man is a classic superhero — a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.”
Producer Avi Arad added, “I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.”
Producer Laura Ziskin said, “We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen.”
The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment. B-roll footage of the announcement will be available via satellite later this evening — see uplink times coordinate information below.
Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.
Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I’m Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.
Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films’ “Red Riding Trilogy – 1974” directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley’s “Boy A,” for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.
Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in “Beautiful Thing” (Sound Space/Kit Productions), “The Overwhelming,” and “Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship” (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include “Romeo and Juliet” (Manchester Royal Exchange) and “Kes” (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

FInally!! What were you thinking putting some guy who looks and talks like an 8 year old to play spiderMAN….about time you stupid crappywood idiots woke up-I guess they woke up from their coke head slumber and realized that you can actually find good actors around.
He was superb in Boy-A & Red Riding too.
Is he 900 feet tall? Seriously, in this photo he looks like he’s playing Mr. Fantastic in the Fantastic Four reboot. Maybe instead of swinging from building to building on a web he’ll just walk across them.
i call shenanigans! donald glover for spiderman!
I demand mechanical webshooters this time. No ejaculatory web-goo.
This guy looks about eight feet tall.
These days, I’m suspicious of any “update” from Sony: any bets on which spider-power Sony going to take away without informing the public? Better check your popcorn for spyware, too…
All those allnighters in the lab can really age a person
He’ll be 34 by the third film. Brilliant…
Everyone thought Bale would make a good Batman.
HE IS TOTALLY FUGLY!!!!!!!!! HELP!
I have heard no coherent reason why Tobey Maguire is out of the picture. I liked him in all three Spiderman movies and had no problem with his continuing in more.
Actually, a lot of people thought Christian Bale would make a great Batman. He was just psycho enough, handsome and he had the physique – so I have no idea what you’re talking about.
But with THIS choice, it just goes to show you, that Hollywood after having been giving clue after big mothereffing clue, that females respond just as much to sexually aesthetically pleasing visual stimuli of the opposite sex onscreen as males do (Twilight anyone? Pattinson? Lautner? Tatum?) they ONCE AGAIN, show just how CLUELESS they are, by casting a young, lanky Barry Manilow lookalike.
So, is the plan to alienate more than HALF the world populace from seeing this movie? To make it a male only venture?? That’s a new one. Even guys want to watch a guy who at least looks like he might be able to get laid.
Oh, and the ‘Boy A’ mantra that some publicist is running on a loop in this thread – well, that outs you as anything BUT an objective bystander — what the fck is Boy A? Let me assume that it’s some film where this guy gives a great performance….Seth Rogen gave a great performance in Knocked Up, why not make him Spiderman?? It makes as much sense.
WTF, yeah brilliant logic, let’s just cast pieces of meat like the guys from the Twilight series rather than real actors who are talented. You are part of the problem with that logic. I’m glad they didn’t just choose some male model just to make the teen girls happy. By the way, Peter Parker is supposed to be goofy looking.
Oh, grow up, those who are criticizing him unseen. (Remember the brouhaha over Daniel Craig as Bond? Anyone?) And is anyone thinking about the damned STORY? An actor this exciting and gifted should be given an effing chance. Let’s shake things up a little and do something NOT expected, NOT formula, NOT teenaged (sorry, but I’m so sick of mumbling teens with attitude and no training). It’s a story. Suspend your disbelief and go with it. I’m celebrating a stage-trained Brit. Bring him on!
Unseen? His picture’s right there! & what I see is a pencil neck (Really! It’s Audrey Hepburn’s & only looked good on her!)that was in 2 other movies I didn’t like. What’s not seen is the STORY that you’re admonishing everyone to give a chance as a barometer for an actor’s ability. Is he your son? ‘Cause that rationale is 1 only a mother could love.
Webster’s Dictionary new meaning of the word ‘Hubris’: Sony’s re-boot of the Spiderman franchise.
I don’t understand why there needed to be a reboot? wasn’t the original raimi contract for like 6 movies? okay so spiderman 3 was bad, but he could’ve turned it around with the final three! i mean, shrek 3 was atrocious but 4 wasn’t bad. i wouldn’t have minded giving raimi and company another shot at it!
Is this Sasha Baron Cohen doing another Bruno movie schtick? If not, this guy is Bruno’s long lost brother.
The goal is to make money and that they will do.
Is it driving me INSANE that Brits and Aussies are getting all the roles over American actors. First a British Batman (the horrible Christian Bale) and now a British Spiderman. There are now films and tv shows where practically the entire cast is British or Australian putting on American accents (hello “True Blood”, “Flash Forward” – to name just two). HEY HOLLYWOOD – there are thousands of talented US actors – stop shipping in actors from other countries!
I enjoyed his role in Boy A. I think Spiderman will be a cakewalk for him.
Oh yeah, I’ll watch the movie in 2D.
I hate to point out the obvious but, uh, he’s kinda ugly. And…old? I think Michael Angarano would have been the better choice. And Logan Lerman – and Jamie Bell at a pinch, But it’s all by the by now I guess. Good luck getting the teen girls through the door!
Sooo…do we know WHEN the reboot is supposed to be taking place? I mean, in regards to the Spidey world? Do we know for certain that its taking place when Parker’s in High School? The Hulk reboot (w/Norton) took place AFTER he had become The Hulk, when everyone thought it was going to start over from the beginning.
I actually didn’t mind Tobey Maguire in the first two spideys…but the third was just all kinds of wrong. I can’t say whether I like or dislike this choice for Parker. For all we know, he may do a good job.
Did anyone else remember when they announced Heath Ledger as the joker? A lot of my friends said “He’s going to ruin it! What are they trying to do Brokeback Batman?”
I guess we’ll have to just wait, hope, and see what happens!
They wanted someone who resembled the dude from twilight.
but looks wise he sucks, as did TM, who wasn’t all that bad
They can’t just change the actor after three movies. And they can’t just change him from having an american accent to a british accent.
I do not believe any fan was tired of Toby, Sam or the rest of the cast; they are stellar in the roles. The one issue I had with movies was the changing of the story? I mean, come on! Teens would not have been even more endeared to Spider buy the death of Gwen Stacy? Why BEGIN with Mary Jane. I feel this choice lead Sony with no room to grow the franchise. THIS was the downfall of Toby’s Spiderman future!
Seriously do we really want this pretty boy actor to be the new spiderman,NO we dont,do we need Toby Maguire,YES.
Toby was the main spiderman since 2002 he’s one of the greatest actors of all time, if it wasn’t for Toby “Spiderman” would of sucked,he is the actor we need for Spiderman 4 not this pretty boy,if Marvel has this film made with Andrew in it he’ll make it just like a “Twilight” drama, only girls and little kids will only watch it.Teenage boys and middle aged boys will hate it just like “Justin Bieber”,it will turn to a boring love drama and not an action movie like it should be.
