Yes, this is a reimagining of the Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster. Sony announced today that Len Wiseman is in final negotiations to direct Total Recall. (Funny how, two days ago, Wiseman’s agency ICM denied anything substantive was going on…) Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, the presidents of Columbia Pictures, said the film will be a new, contemporized adaptation of Total Recall, which was based on the story, “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Kurt Wimmer is writing the screenplay. Neal H. Moritz will produce through his Original Film banner. Toby Jaffe will oversee production on behalf of Original Film. Columbia Pictures secured the rights to Total Recall from Miramax. He most recently directed the pilot for “Hawaii Five-O” and is co-writer and producer of the upcoming Underworld 4. If this is Wiseman’s next film, it would be a blow for Fox’s hopes to have Wiseman return and direct Die Hard 5. As recently as last week at Comic-Con, Bruce Willis was quoted as saying he’d love to do another with Wiseman, after their collaboration on Die Hard 4 put vigor back into that franchise.

Why bother?
The original still holds up, effects and all. So instead of Verhoeven we get Wiseman… And good luck finding a lead with half of Arnold’s charisma.
Paul Verhoeven’s version was vulgar and patronizingly unimaginative.
You’re just saying that because you wish you had the balls to use special effects for brilliance like putting three boobs on one woman. It will be interesting to see what modern CGI can do…
calling Paul Verhoeven vulgar is a bit like calling Spielberg shamelessly manipulative. yeah… and? losing Wiseman for DH5 might give McTiernan enough time to get out of the clink and take the reins. going from R to PG-13 wasn’t good enough though. can we get a PG rating this time, Fox? Pleeeeeeasse.
At first I flinch, then I think they could make this redo way smarter than original a la Dark Knight. And by smarter I mean more midget girls with uzis. Who do you guys think for lead? Clive Owen? matt Damon?
Seriously, Len Wiseman?! Why, who chose him as the best guy to follow in the footsteps of real action directors?!
Didn’t the stupid studio execs learn anything this summer? Sequels and retreads are not what audiences crave. GET ORIGINAL!
Why bother is my question, as well. There are many other Philip K. Dick works ripe for a film adaptation, so why rehash the ones already in existence? “The Unteleported Man”, anyone?
If anything, this should totally star Dwayne Johnson and Eva Mendes. With someone Carla Gugino playing his crazy wife (and the two of them going for a threepeat of movies together).
Long overdue. The original story is a terrific source, and was morphed in the Verhoven/Arnold version into a loud, crass, Schwarzenegger vehicle. Yeah it made money, but sheesh…
Would love to see a thoughtful reboot.
Wait does Vigor mean shitty plot and underwhelming action?
ironic that the prod co banner is “Original”…not so much.
and Rick, I totes agree with you
Do you have to use the word “reimagining” like we don’t know this isn’t studio-hack jargon? Just say remake, why dontcha?
Agree with RickDickulous. Just watched it on DVD recently and still holds up today. And today’s emo/gay-friendly Hollyweird couldn’t produce a commanding lead like Arnold, so forget it. Adrien Brody toplined the Predator reboot, nuff said.
Ah, homophobia and veiled anti-semitism. How ya doing, Whiskey?
“Paul Verhoeven’s version was vulgar and patronizingly unimaginative.”
Whatever. Paul Verhoeven has got more talent in his little finger than Len Wiseman has in his whole body. Len Wiseman is a hack. Pure and simple. He will utterly fail at his job.
To paraphrase someone much smarter and wiser than me: Hollywood will eat itself. Doesn’t take a genius to know why movie attendance is falling year on year. If it hadn’t been for Avatar and Inception, this year would have been a complete bomb. This is a declining industry – hiking ticket prices can only hide that fact for so long. If you don’t know what the secret is, I’m not going to tell you, but please stop destroying the business, and move on to selling car insurance or something equally unimaginative. We don’t need high paid studio execs to remake, reboot and retread properties from earlier times – trained monkeys can do that.
Considering the last attempted adaptation went from Richard Dreyfus to Arnold Schwarzenegger as the lead, one can only wonder how this ‘reimagining’ will turn out….
I haven’t seen a shred of anything, beyond a balloon full of hyper narcissism, well, i guess they have to impress me for a change.
Pathetic.
I have jump on the bile train on this one with no disrespect to Wiseman, who has some talent.
This is a ridiculously desperate reach. They would be better off reissuing it anniversary style and doing a to the nines Blu Ray.
Better yet, call Verhoeven and get him on a new movie.
Oh God Of War,not ANOTHER REMAKE. However, if people don’t get to carried away with the CGI, thinking that ANYTHING is possible, it might look half way decent. There are some movies I’d love to see remade with todays technology, but for god’s sake don’t reimagine it right into the trash can of filmmaking.
