Hollywood has newly minted its next star, and it’s baby-faced Andrew Garfield. [UPDATE: I'm told Garfield's pay scale on the film is around $500,000 salary on the first film, $1 million for the second one, and $2 million for the third film. All of the finalists were presented with those terms in a deal for one film and two options.] I was first to tell you the 26-year-old was a finalist to play the new Spider-Man in the Marc Webb-directed 3D relaunch of Sony Picture Entertainment’s most lucrative film franchise. Also under consideration were Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Logan Lerman, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, and Michael Angarano. Sony execs viewed the screen tests of six of those eight finalists last Friday night. Garfield’s biggest break until today was being cast in the upcoming David Fincher-directed The Social Network about the Facebook founders; my sources say his scene-stealing star turn in it is the reason he snagged the role of Spidey over the other finalists.
The young thesp also can be seen in The Other Boleyn Girl and The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus and The Red Riding Trilogy and the upcoming Never Let Me Go. Born in Los Angeles to a British mother and an American father, he moved with his family to Surrey, England when he was 3. He was trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and then began acting primarily on stage. He played Romeo once, and modeled in Vogue, and in 2007 was named ONE OF 10 ACTORS TO WATCH by a Hollywood trade.
But it is his heartbreaking performance in Boy A, playing a character trying to outrun his involvement in a heinous crime during his childhood, that captured my attention. With the studio taking the rebooted Peter Parker back in time to high school, Garfield’s youthful appearance and ability to display vulnerability was as important to his casting as his believability in the action sequences. Neither Garfield nor director Webb have ever done a 3D or tentpole movie. Sony will now be able to line up the rest of its cast for the film which will begin shooting by year’s end for a July 3, 2012 release date from a script by Jamie Vanderbilt.
This puts an end to all the speculation and drama that began last December for Spider-Man 4. It prompted an internal memo to the crew from the visual effects department that script problems were going to delay a February start of production and the film’s May 11, 2011 release date. Director Sam Raimi hated the script, which saw the writers Jamie Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire, Gary Ross and Alvin Sargent all take passes at it. The seriousness of those script woes became evident when visual effects crews were told to take other jobs, because there was no longer a date when production would start.
On January 11th, Deadline broke the story that Raimi, the studio, and the producers had decided to scrap the fourth Spider-Man film. Star Tobey Maguire was dumped as Spidey. The studio instead decided on a franchise reboot, emboldened by a script that Vanderbilt wrote. The studio’s determination to move quickly was borne out by a Deadline scoop two days later that Webb became the choice to direct a new 3D-shot film which would take the franchise back to the beginning, with Peter Parker struggling to come to grips with his superpowers in high school.
While websites floated bogus rumors about who had supposedly landed the Spidey role, the studio quietly narrowed its list of 8 finalists to play the wall crawler. Sony brass viewed the screen tests of 6 of the eight candidates that most impressed the studio, the director, and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, who are producing for Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios. This week, the studio ended the search and quickly locked in a deal with Garfield’s CAA reps.

Honestly, who really cares about this? Sure Sony does, but who else? This franchise should have taken a five year break before starting up with a redo. This smells like a floating turd that just won’t sink. Well, this news has been greeted with a great big yawn by the fan-boy community.
Now here’s the news that everybody really wants to know about:
When does Chris Nolan start shooting the next Batman movie?
Does that salary include residuals? Seems kinnda scummy of Sony.
I’m just waiting for them to reboot the reboot! it’s gonna be GREAT! who knows, maybe they’ll even reboot the reboot of the reboot. imagine the possibilities!
I actually let out a “whoop” when I heard the news. I saw the first part of the Red Riding Trilogy at AFI Fest last Fall and Andrew was brilliant. Red Riding: 1974 is a very gritty story, and even though the subject matter is depressing (serial killer on the loose) Andrew’s performance definitely made a good impression on me.
I also saw the ‘Imaginarium’ movie, (which I did not care for at all), but he did stand out in that very crowded movie (Heath Ledger, Jude Law, Johnny Depp, Colin Ferrell, Christopher Plummer).
He really is the best actor of all those being considered for Spiderman. I’m really looking forward to seeing him do the big budget films.
1. A Spiderman reboot?
2. A British actor to play Spiderman?
Two wrongs don’t make a right. Going down like whoah.
Let’s not forget that his father is American….The Spiderman reboot issue; I have no opinion. However, he is a pretty good actor – able to capture the arrogant entitled student in “Lions for Lambs” to his incredibly touching work in “Boy A”.
He moved to England when he was 3. His outlook is British and his citizenship is undoubtedly British. At least Christian Bale moved to the US when he was 14. Sooo, is Andrew Garfield going to speak with an American accent when he hits the talk shows?
It’s an additionally dumb casting decision because he’s too old and cute he ain’t. All you people citing his work in “Boy A” sound like studio plants.
Bah. Sitting this one out.
SPIDER-MAN 3 grossed just under $900 million worldwide, biggest of the three. Please explain how this franchsie is “tired.”
SM3 was ‘tired’ because the movie sucked, who cares how much money it made. Several really bad movies make a ton of money, such as Twilight, Alice In Wonderland, Clash Of The Titans… should I keep going cause those are just movies from this summer?
The franchise is going to die…because Sam and Toby and at least Alvin S., the writer for all 3, aren’t involved. They really should’ve stayed with these people to the end. It’s a not a continuing tv series. It’s a movie franchise. And the cat’s already out of the bag — on what this is about.
We saw this with JAWS. First movie is still great.
The mystery’s gone after that.
Same with the first 3 Alien movies. I still put ALIEN 3 by fincher ahead of Cameron’s ALIENS…but that’s me. But after Scott’s great first film…the mystery is really gone.
I’m not saying it can’t be done…but you really have to respect the audience enough to care to push yourself harder on a franchise.
And Hollywood’s not doing that anymore.
Thank you Sam and Toby, for walking away from this upcoming mess.
Didn’t we already do a reboot?
That is, didn’t Tobey start out in high school, you know, origin story and all?
This isn’t Batman Begins. Chris Nolan isn’t directing this, is he?
I smell a turd, and I just showered.
What‘s with the script? This guy will be 27 in august. Will they send him to school and pretend that he is 17?
I liked Josh Hutcherson. He has that “nice hero” all over his face. This guy doesn’t look like he is good person. The villain costume suits him a lot better.
This guy will be 27 in august. Will they send him to school and pretend that he is 17?
Hey…it worked for the Grease cast, didn’t it?
$500,000 over first film? 1 million for second and 2 million for third? Those extras who play Cullens in Twilight and have like 3 lines in the movie are probably getting millions. And they pay him for the whole film $500 0000… It’s funny that they already plan 2 sequels. Producers of Prince of Percia have planned trilogy too. Until it tanked so loud. And producers of new Superman…
Somehow i feel this one will tank too. People are just tired of Superheroes. There are too many of them. There is every month new comic book movie about some superhero. I feel like Captain America wiil tank too. And then movie moguls will finally see that Superheroes should go for some time away.
Speaking of the Cullens, Garfield`s hair is a total Robert Pattinson mane knock off. I wonder if that helped the casting decision over other candidates. I mean, he`s a good actor but his resume isn`t stronger than, lets say, Bell`s, whom I can`t stand but credit where credit`s due. Plus, the guy is too old (26-27) for a supposed highsclool reboot. Did they change it into, lets say, college years?
That’s a Brandon Routh-type deal — obviously, this being CAA, there’s a renegotiation that happens depending on how well movie one does. If this turns into a Superman Returns-style debacle, then it’s easy-ish for all parties to walk away. But if this does like 400m domestic, of course Garfield gets a raise, just like Downey Jr. did for IM 2. These sequel numbers are just placeholders on the contract until everybody sees how this movie actually does.
too soon to reboot this thing. And he doesn’t look like a winner to me.
What’s with the whining? Andrew Garfield is a fantastic actor – probably too good for Spiderman – but hey-ho. And he was in Lions for Lambs.
How is this a “reboot”? It’s more like Roger Moore coming for Sean Connery — Garfield is 27, not all that different from Maguire. And they’re working from a script by Vanderbilt who was already writing the unmade 4.
I think this “reboot” term is getting unbelievably OLD. As “tired” as Nikki thinks the “Spider-Man series” is (Part 3 is one of the highest grossing films of the last decade, even if it wasn’t a great movie, it sure wasn’t as bad as she makes it out to be either).
@ Mike Fleming-
“Garfield’s biggest break until today was being cast in the upcoming David Fincher-directed The Social Network…”
Actually, I think his biggest break was being cast as Robert Redford’s student in “Lions for Lambs” with Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise. The movie bombed, but it was high profile and he was excellent in his one-on-one scenes with Redford.
I wonder if the Spider-Man reboot will be set in London. That might not be a bad way to go. It could work. Americans might not like that, but it could work.
I just can’t believe how badly this got screwed this up. Spiderman 3 grossed $900 freaking million freaking dollars worldwide. Since when did that create the necessity to reboot the franchise??? Tobey Maguire wasnt perfect as Spiderman, but he was very good. I agree with some earlier posters who compared this to Superman reboot. I have no qualms about a British actor…whatever…no biggie there. But I see no reason for them to change directors and Spider freaking Man!!!! Look at Batman…they rebooted, but did so 15 years later and with well-known actors/actresses and an Oscar-nominated director…and it is better than ever. Spiderman 3 was out WAY TOO SOON for a reboot!!! Dumb move!!!
@former agent:
I completely agree with you. The Brit and Aussie age counterparts actually go to Drama School. You have young people coming out here after 3-4 solid years of training at places like Central School, Bristol Vic, LAMDA, RADA, Guildhall in England and NIDA or WAPPA down under. On the flip side most Americans of the same age group just drive West with confidence/arrogance and get some headshots when they hit L.A.. In auditions, I can’t help believing that solid craft makes the Brits and Aussies read a lot better with actual technique used on the material. Even if it’s close, that extra edge is enough to put them over. You have to remember that American examples of actors who never studied but ended up being great like Sean Penn, DiCaprio, Downey Jr. are exceptions to the rule. (I say never but Penn did end up studying at The Lost Studio for a bit with Peggy Fuery) On the whole we/the studios are breeding a whole crop of American actors that are not fit to carry on the legacy left by actors such as Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, Pacino, DeNiro and others who spent years honing their craft in New York at places like HB Studios, The Actors Studio, studying with teachers such as Sandy Meisner, Uta Hagen, Stella Adler etc. In the corporate world it’s the equivalent of saying do you want to hire someone who has undergone rigorous training for this or someone who is quite full of himself and confident but has no real technique? As far as I’m concerned training to be an actor should be undertaken with the same devotion one would put into being a doctor or a lawyer!! It’s the only profession where someone with no training or craft thinks they can stand on set opposite someone like Daniel Day Lewis just because they were a big hit with the ladies back in their hometown and girls love their abs. I blame the inept producers that chase bringing in teens to take their ticket sales with no regard to hiring people with real ability and training.
He def looks better with the new nose…I wouldn’t call him homely at all, even before the surgery/ies?
Here’s an idea – how about hiring American actors to play Americans. Peter Parker will play better here if he is an actual American. Not an Aussie, not a Canandian, not a Brit.
PS -Producers in Producer-ville, in case you haven’t notice, we are in a Depression here. Not a Great Recession, but a Depression.
People are in need of an escape, they RUN to the theater in this type of economic climate. Don’t mess with American-created mythologies that are themselves a success without stupid re-tooling.
This is a great idea. The only thing I’m sad about is that this will keep a very promising serious young actor from developing his talent in meatier roles. He was amazing in the Red Riding Trilogy and in Spike Jonze’s short I am Here. His face was covered in the short and what he was able to do with voice and body language was genuinely moving.
As far as sex appeal, come on. He is totally sexy in a vulnerable lanky way and very appealing to me and I think most women. He is watchable in a young Pacino style. Toby McGuire is no sex pot by the way. If anything this guy is too good for a schlocky franchise movie at this point in his career.
Wow, that looks bad. And they’re basing it on the Ultimate Spider-man which is in its waning years. Both Amazing and Ultimate have become sad and this movie will probably be even more so.
Excellent casting choice!! He was phenomenal in BOY A. Glad they took a chance and gave the role to a talented actor. Who cares if he is British? Most of the best acting these days is done by the Brits and the Aussies. I bet he will be better than Tobey. He has strength and vulnerability and he is totally sexy in a “real” way. Yay!
A lot of people seem to think they’re going to re-do the origin story. I don’t think this will happen. Because the Raimi Spideys aren’t that old, everyone knows the origin. I have a feeling this will be a “different universe” version of Spidey, like the comic “Ultimate Spider-Man” or the recent animated “Spectacular Spider-Man” …these movies will be about Peter in high school, after he’s already been turned into Spider-Man. I guarantee they’ll gloss over the spider bite in the opening credits. Hopefully they’ll go this route so they can get right into a good story. Hopefully this Peter Parker will be a bit more fun and smart-alecky like he was in the comics. I liked Tobey’s version….but this is a great opportunity to truly make it different than the previous trilogy.
Physically – I think Garfield is good for the part…he’s very thin and lanky – which will make him look more like recent versions of Spider-Man and probably lend to the character’s acrobatics.
Here’s my fanboy hope: They introduce Eddie Brock in this first movie, just as Peter’s friend…do the black suit in the 2nd….and the 3rd be the REAL Venom movie we were screwed out of w/ Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
Terrible miscasting. In the comics, Spiderman in costume is quite muscular albeit the lean variety. The main criticism of Tobey was he was too small and puny for a superhero. (Peter Parker may have had a nerd personality but he was not built like Screech.)
So they decide to cast someone new and what does Sony do: makes matters worse.
I did a google image search of Andrew garfield. He is a delicate, scrawny punk with a long neck like a gazelle and not a trace of muscle. Repulsive miscasting.
Mike, I’m not sure if they have protein powder and weights all the way out there in Santa Monica, but I’ve heard that kind of black magic does wonders for muscle building. You should look into it.
I think Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, or Michael Angarano would have been better choices. They have more of a Peter Parker/Spiderman charm than the others that were in the running, including Garfield. I think the others would have played a better Peter Parker. Tobey did well but after a while, but the actual movies themselves flopped. But even then I felt as though something was missing. I’m actually interested in seeing the direction this movie will go and how Garfield will be as both peter Parker and Spiderman.
