In a shocking development, bestselling author Janet Evanovich is leaving St. Martin’s Press after 15 years. The publisher refused to pay her request for $50 million for her next four books — so now her son/agent Peter Evanovich is expected to shop the deal to other publishers shortly. I’m told Evanovich is St. Martin’s biggest fiction author, best known for her novel series about bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. Katherine Heigl will play her in One for the Money, a Julie Anne Robinson-directed film for Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and Lakeshore that Lionsgate will distribute.
The St. Martin’s Press decision is the way that publishing business is going these days, with houses crunching the bottom line and not giving the kind of advances to franchise authors that were commonplace five years ago. Still, publishing industry insiders said Evanovich’s ask was on the high side, despite her bestselling track record. Her latest novel, Sizzling Sixteen, has been near the top of the bestseller lists since its publication earlier this summer. Evanovich’s longtime St. Martin’s editor, Jennifer Enderlin, said, “I’m not commenting on anything.”

Greed doesnt always make the world go round.
Unless you’re in Hollywood.
I agree with Evan. I think she wanted out. I’m a huge fan of her work. And with her name and track record, she can actually publish her own books, sell them via Amazon and Barnes and Noble, and easily make the millions she’s been making for her publisher.
She has a loyal fan base and she’s the top writer, bar none, in this genre. She’s sold what, about 100 million books? If so, what she’s asking for, in essence, what she’s asking for is to get a royalty of $2 per book.
If she publishes her books through her own imprint, she’ll get a royalty of $15-20 per book hardcover and $3 paperback. And that’s how much St. Martin’s will be losing.
She’s not a dumb woman. She didn’t get where she is by being stupid. Obviously, she knows what she’s doing. Going independent would be incredibly smart, she’d make a hell of a lot more money that way.
I think JE made better business decisions when her advisors didn’t call her Mommy, Monkeybutt so eloquently put it.
Troublemaker, the graphic novel that JE co-wrote with her daughter is getting poor reader reviews as posted on Amazon. While there albeit a few reviews, they rate the book three stars or lower. As I read the reviews, I sense that the reviewers felt cheated.
Personally, I feel the JE overplayed her hand by asking for $50 million for 4 books. As for going independent, I’m not sure. I think it’s dependent on a lot of variables one of the most important building reliable infrastructure. I guess time will tell.
I am Sad that She is Leaving and we may never get to see the End of the Plum Delima…But I agree so much with all of you on every point just about. you are right..after 12… it just disappears. I love the characters and I re-read her books alot, but I am back at 13 again for the 5th time, and Do I care to read 14… not really. But I Really do want to see what happens, and I really do want it to never end, and I really do want her to start growing as a character. Seemed like she was until 12… then Ranger got a little more pushy and less tigerlike.. And 13 is ok…And I dont remember liking 14 at all .. I have not read 15, but i am half heartedly looking to like 16.. But what then?? I really Hope she does not Ruin the series by letting others take over anymore.. Please Janet.,.. Write Stephanie a wonderful, exciting ending to a great and fantastic Series.. Please?! Unless she really still would like to really write Stephanie again, I think she should give it a happy ending… Decide what she is going to do with Joe and Carlos and say goodbye. Don’t Screw up anymore , Stephen King Screwed up The Dark Tower series at the End.. She does not need to do that too.
