Ever since Deadline broke the news that Steve McPherson was resigning as ABC Entertainment
Group President yesterday, emails have been sent to media outlets filled with rumors about his personal and/or professional behavior. Disney wouldn’t respond to Deadline’s requests for comment. But tonight, McPherson’s longtime entertainment attorney Tom Hoberman issued this statement in response to Deadline’s inquiry earlier today about allegations of possible sexual harrassment with female employees which led to an internal Disney investigation: ”Upon Steve McPherson returning to work from his vacation on Monday, he made a voluntary decision to resign and ABC accepted his resignation. It is not uncommon for high level executives to be the subject of gossip and innuendo. That would includes rumors of internal situations which can easily be misinterpreted or misrepresented. Seems like it goes with the territory, and there is nothing further to discuss.”

That’s not even a non-denial denial. It’s just a non.
Finally.
It’s what he didnt say – that says more than what he said.
There is no denial of the specific accusation. Therefore the attorney cannot be held accountable should the accusation survive.
Attorneys protect themselves first … and their clients second.
When your attorney speaks like a politician – YOU are about to go to the polls and face the consequences.
I’m sorry but this guy has been out of control for a long time. His wild behavior, his unchecked mood swings, medicating his bi polar illness with alcohol. Leaving his staff shaking with fear after his deeply aggressive and out of control tirades. His total lack of remorse for his behavior. The question is why was he allowed to hold his employees hostage with his rage for so long? Were his employees that traumatized? That beaten into submission? Did they have Stockholm Syndrome? The stories are so awful. That kind of cruelty was tolerated for far too long at ABC. Where was human resources? His former employees should all file lawsuits or be given hazard pay for the years this man took off their lives. Mental cruelty should never be tolerated.
Well well well…When everyone was pissing on Ben Silverman and lauding McPherson for tearing Ben a new one, where were all these reports of how bad “Stevie” is?
I suppose the lemmings will now get on the kill Mcpherson band wagon.
Thank you.
Jeez – Are there any decent senior execs anymore? TIme after time we hear these same stories.
ABC were enablers to this nut job. The guy needs help. Anger management workshops. Desperate Housewives was a spec script. He didn’t want Greys Anatomy. The first order was for a mid season show.
Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon and Patmore championed it.
Where is Ms. Patmore in all this? Apparently still on a notes call and no one can reach her.
Too bad they let Mark Pedowitz go (who is a GREAT guy) for this knucklehead.
I just thought he was a fraud and a jerk. Didn’t realize he was such a bad guy. Go get hammered Steve. It’ll all be better…
Isn’t this the asshole who banned Adam Lambert from ABC for “inappropriate” behaviour ? Karma, anyone ??
I bet the lawyer charged a lot just to say this. What a joke.
I guess it just doesn’t pay to go to work, do a very good job, treat your bosses and those working for you with respect anymore? Truth is it never did. Let’s just say most of the guys running these big operations behave very badly. Ever wonder why so few have actually stayed married to their first or second wives? By the way, a lot of the women in these big jobs are not so much fun to be around either!
Don’t you have to be bipolar self-medicating with drugs/alcohol to be a top exec in this biz?
This just in… Steve McPherson cries, enters rehab, blames everyone else, then pitches new show “Denial” staring his 80′s haircut, Tiger, OJ, Clemens, Bonds, Jesse James and Spitzer. Andy Cohen from Bravo predicted to buy the show so long as he can serve as the drunken host.
I genuinely liked and admired Steve and still do, even though he passed on hiring me, afterwards awkwardly avoiding me any time I was nearby. Nonetheless, he was very successful for a long time which is very rare in this business. And I think he has the capacity to continue to be a great executive and a great human, but he did surround himself with marginally competent people whose one great skill was managing up to him, turning the 10th floor into an echo chamber. While those types are insidiously pernicious and of no short supply in Hollywood (and especially abc), it is an interesting case study as to why he wasn’t ever saavy enough to surround himself with people who might have better helped him (or at least kept the perhaps unimaginative, yet very decent, straight shooters like Pedowitz around to keep him grounded). Unless Steve’s real intention was to ultimately see this result…
Still, I genuinely hope he succeeds in his next endeavor and wish him the best of luck.
Do any of you who post these venomous messages of hate have real jobs..and if so, are you doing anything more meaningful than sending out spec scripts while working as a barista? Steve, like many of us who actually work real jobs in entertainment, is driven by passion for the work. He busted his ass for touchstone and abc for several years–eating, sleeping, and breathing to put great shows on the air. Is he tough as nails and did he expect the best from every single person who worked at the studio and the network? Absolutely. So he yelled, so he sent ALL CAPS emails. If that is too much pressure for you, then you don’t belong in Hollywood. All of these rumors…and that’s all they are rumors, have yet to be substantiated. So until they are, shut your pie hole and worry about your own life instead of attempting to pull a great man down.
Honey, no one had to pull him down. He pulled himself down. Did you see the crap he picked up for the fall? Those weak pick ups alone were enough to send him packing. The bipolar, rag -aholic behavior should not be confused with “passion” for his job. That is not what it takes to work successfully and you know it.
If you are indeed an ABC exec it sounds like you are an enabler.
Are you talking about WB or Fox?
To ABC Exec: hi Steve. Obviously your post. Let’s see what drops out of this and check back in a month or so. Loser.
