The 76-year-old director of The Ghost Writer has been under house arrest in his Swiss chalet since December last year. The US wants him to face sentencing for a case dating back to 1977. The Polish director is wanted in the US over a conviction for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. Switzerland says that Roman Polanksi is now free, and that the US cannot appeal the decision.
Polankski, who was originally charged with six offences including rape and sodomy, pleaded guilty to unlawful sex following a plea bargain. But he fled the US in 1978 before sentencing and has never returned.
He was taken into custody in Switzerland in September last year when he traveled from his home in France to collect a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival.
Observers over here wonder why it’s taken the US more than 30 years to revive a case even Polanski’s victim wishes to forget.

collect your lifetime achievement, I sure as hell wouldn’t want it.
Now its in black and white why the pilgrims left, immoral, this ‘let’s hate america and ask for help at the same time’ is sickening. The fact that europeans think that there is nothing wrong with drugging and raping a child is horrifying. Or is it because its an american. After all these years of being downtrodden you people still believe that celebrities are better than their fellow man. Sad and embarrassing.
Am I glad to be European and not a hypocrite American.
Oh yes. Downtrodden Europe is the world center of celebrity worship. And clearly, the pilgrims fled Europe because their countrymen all hated America. In 1620.
Actually, Kim, much of the world dislikes us because despite our wealth and power, at times this country seems to be populated entirely by idiots incapable of composing a coherent sentence in their own language and ignorant of even the most basic events of history or anything at all that occurs beyond its borders.
And they get that impression from READING POSTINGS LIKE YOURS.
Sorry kim, we Europeans do not think nothing is wrong with drugging and raping a child. You have a sad fantasy of Europe. As I see it, there was a crime and a punishment – in the USA – with a brokered deal. Not too uncommon, I hear. Btw., this all american deal with Polanski and the judge seem to me, like you Americans like to let people go away with drugging and raping a kid. As you can trust me, the swiss do a thorough check on legal things. So maybe the problem lays once again in arrogant american justice people, trying to get reelected.
So PLEASE buggar off.
while you’re busy throwing stones at the europeans for this, ask yourself why is it in the *U.S.A* this man was given a sentence of mere months for what he did. that’s when the real injustice occurred, over 30 years ago. favoring celebrities is not limited to one culture; in fact, it’s an art form in America.
“Observers over here wonder why it’s taken the US more than 30 years to revive a case even Polanski’s victim wishes to forget.” Oh maybe because he fled the U.S. before being sentenced for drugging, raping, and sodomizing a 13 year old? It’s amazing that Deadline is calling for the head of Mel Gibson while at the same time advocating the release of a convicted pedophile. You gotta love Hollywood’s warped since of morals.
It just goes to show that if you are talented/famous you can do pretty much what you want. That’s a pretty big victory for the great director/paedophile child rapist. I honestly do not understand why anybody supports this scumbag.
All I have to say is that Switzerland disgusts me today.
i m not surprised by the lack of respect from those swiss , the rapist wins again!
Another rich, famous spoiled brat gets away with it and all of his fellow rich, famous brats can celebrate. I wanted to throw my TV against the wall when he received a standing ovation at the Oscars when he won Best Director.
It’s about time.
This case has been mishandled by the prosecutors and should not have been pursued any longer I believe Mr. Polanski probably violated the law, but he also did not receive a fair and open prosecution.
Of course, being held in one’s Gstaad chalet is not a bad form of house restriction. Polanski is arrogant and did some stupid things, but if the victim doesn’t wish to continue, and the case was not well put together…it is time to move on.
He should be permitted to return to the states, but it appears he will be arrested on sight so I would not count on seeing him around Hollywood…soon.
Polanski indeed violated the law. He didn’t receive a fair and open prosecution because he fled the United States to avoid it. He is permitted to return to the States but then can face the ‘fair and open
prosecution.’
Ah, he should be arrested on site, Tom.
And on sight, too.
What do you mean he probably violated the law? He did violate it, that’s a fact that has never been contested. He was afraid he was going to have to go to jail and that’s why he ran. He’s a piece of shit scum. I hope someone rapes and sodomizes that asshole.
…Mel Gibson, however, will be going to jail.
Lock up your (pre-teen) daughters ’cause Romans got some celebrating to do!
Derp de derp derp derp…
“All Liberals are paedophiles! This man is clearly a child rapist!”
De derp de derp derp derp…
“You goddamn Facist Conservatives! Leave him alone, he’s an artistic genius!”
Comments over.
Ha! Wish you’d have posted first — I could have saved some time.
Wasn’t it an action by the Swiss that moved this case off the justice system’s back burner in the first place?
No. It was not.
I guess rape has a time limit in hollywood. Thank goodness i have a shotgun so that when someone oike him tries to drug and rape a thirteen old girl i can rub him out
Time to send in the Navy Seals and extradite him the American way, at midnight, with a black bag over his head. Roman be afraid… be very afraid…
On a side note, I’m unloading my Swiss gold if anyone’s interested. I no longer can invest in a nation that harbor’s sex offenders.
“Observers over here wonder”, to me, Tim, sounds like a cowardly way of putting across your own view without taking responsibility for it. Either way, your last paragraph requires two immediate responses:
1. The case was revived in reaction to Polanski’s recent attempts to have his conviction quashed.
2. The fact that his victim wishes to forget has nothing to do with anything.
This European observer wonders why so many people are defending this man on the grounds that he is a great artist.
“Observers over here wonder why it’s taken the US more than 30 years to revive a case even Polanski’s victim wishes to forget.”
WHAT KIND OF BULLSHIT STATEMENT IS THAT TIM ADLER?
The simple answer to your “wondering” is that Roman was living and working in a country where he was welcomed and protected. The US didn’t “REVIVE” the case because it was never dead. Polanski ESCAPED sentencing.
That’s a ridiculous thing to say and an even more ridiculous way to put it.
Whether his victim chooses to forget the case or not, it has nothing to do with justice. Are we all to DRUG, RAPE & SODOMIZE 13 year old girls and go on the run until the victim is 43 so we can be forgiven with maturity and the case can be forgotten?
Roman fled the country because the judge reneged on his agreed deal and was actually going to give Polanski a prison sentence in addition to what he had already served… That’s why Roman ran.
But… Roman Polanski drugged, raped and sodomized a 13 year old, AND HE’S GOT THE NERVE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT A JUDGE BREAKING HIS WORD?
Mr. Polanski, it’s a simple thing called karma. If you commit a crime of that magnitude, the judge has the power to reverse his decision, especially when you’ve shown extreme bad taste and were seen partying a couple months later with more young girls when you were given permission to leave the country on a work engagement.
Hollywood is a SICK place. If Roman Polanski wasn’t a great director, he wouldn’t have ONE supporter. In fact, he’d be branded a pedophile for life and longer. How would you feel if he did that to your sibling?
And we’re in a whirlwind over Lindsay Lohan’s fingernails but are in full vocal support over a pedophile.
I’m sure Harrison Ford and Martin Scorsese must be thrilled. Maybe they plan on bringing some underage girls and roofies to Polanski’s house to celebrate.
Eric,
Are you serious or just sick? Any proof HF or MS are pedophiles as well? Am I the last moron on earth to be aware of this fact? Please, explain yourself. This is a serious issue to seed throw kind of shit.
The man committed just about the most heinous crime possible and fled like a coward in lieu of standing trial. He needs to take responsibility for his actions. I don’t care how long it’s been, how many great films he’s made, or what the victim now says. He’s guilty and he needs to stand trial. End of story.
Two things:
1. I’m glad. Let’s just drop it already. The victim wants it over. It’s become an embarrassment for the LA police, and now the US government. Let it go.
2. From what I’ve read on other sites, it seems the US government didn’t provide the Swiss with the evidence they requested, which is why Polanski’s being set free. That’s some stunning ineptitude on behalf of the American legal system, yet again.
Typical Polanski defender.
The Swiss did not want to offend Hollywood, and the big shots, so made up the excuse that there “might” be some errors in the Extradition Request, even though they found none at all.
Who cares if the victim wants it over. We either have the rule of law, where no one is so powerful and famous they get to do whatever they want, including drugging and raping 13-year old girls, or we don’t.
Hollywood — this is why your audience despises you.
There are a few good people around, but most excuse all sorts of abhorrent behavior. On the small end, Lindsay Lohan acts like a coke-addled ego-queen, and her ass is kissed royally despite being 11 hours late. Moving up, Mel Gibson WILL sign with another agency and pals like Jodie Foster will continue working with him. Moving up, Charlie Sheen, who actually held a knife to his wife’s throat on Christmas Day! will continue to be the star of Two and A Half Men, with a massive pay raise and (women everywhere finding him the fantasy bad boy they can “tame”). Finally, there is Roman Polanski matched with Robert Blake.
That’s bullshit. Any sticking up for this guy is a scumbag. It’s the State of California vs Polanski. It has nothing to do with the victim. There was more than enough evidence to extradite him. The Swiss just didn’t want to offend the French and that knew that pussy Obama wouldn’t do anything about this. The Swiss have no goddamn balls.
Good for him. So, who’s the next rapist to be defended by Hollywood?
He drugs and anally rapes a young child … then, years later, is finally caught; everyone thinks that perhaps justice is finally coming. But instead he’s released to sip many more fine Bordeaux in the comfort of his Swiss chalet and elegant home in the French countryside. What a great world we live in.
…Observers over here wonder why it’s taken the US more than 30 years to revive a case even Polanski’s victim wishes to forget…
Well, those FEW “observers” haven’t read news articles about the case, have they? For starters, what the victim wants is irrelevant to the crime of Polanski fleeing the country. Then there’s the issue of that little documentary and Polanski accusing the LA DA”s office of various things.
Guess now we know – if you drug, rape and sodomize a child, you’re okay as long as you win an Oscar and flee to Switzerland.
I’m sure his victim does wish to forget begin raped and sodomized as a 13 year old.
Is that the sound of champagne bottles being uncorked all over TinselTown?
Switzerland won’t extradite Polanski – no doubt thanks in part to the undying support from Hollywood fat cats, who signed petitions, baked cakes for FREE POLANSKI fundraisers and more.
Then these same fat cats want to run Mel Gibson out of town for some offensive remarks he made in private. You guys in Hollywood are seriously messed up.
Again, the right wingers who link here from Drudge are defending Mel Gibson? So, as long as your filmmaking heroes claim to worship Jesus, you’ll excuse a drunken anti-Semitic rant during a DUI arrest, leaving one’s wife of 27 years for the Russian mistress they knocked up, and then a racist tirade recorded where said Jesus worshipper all but admitted to beating said mistress up?
Believe it or not, pal, a person can both want Polanski in jail AND Mel Gibson’s career to be over at the same time.
Didn’t think they would. They’re gonna have to send Batman in there to pull him out of his house.
