The Big C executive producer and cancer survivor Jenny Bicks bought a Porsche when she was diagnosed with cancer. “Don’t wait to get cancer to make yourself happy,” she said at the TCA panel for the upcoming Showtime dark comedy series starring Laura Linney as a woman diagnosed with cancer.
Creator/executive producer Darlene Hunt dismissed suggestions that terminal cancer would be an off-putting subject for TV. “My favorite series ever is MASH… And who likes a war? Not me. A lot of people watched that show.”
Co-star Oliver Platt was very poetic. “The show asks an incredibly beautiful question: Why do we start to live beautifully only when we get a death sentence,” he said before turning to executive producer Vivian Cannon: “It’s time for a cancer comedy?”
After the session, Deadline contributor Diane Haithman asked series regular Gabourey Sidibe to comment on Howard Stern’s tirade about her on his radio show. “Everyone makes rude comments, it’s not the first rude comment I’ve heard it my life,” she said. “People outside of my life, it doesn’t matter what they say because they have no idea what’s in my life.”
At the panel, The Precious star reflected on what she called “a strange year,” in which the showbiz novice landed an Oscar nomination for her film debut.
“Geez, I thought I’d be a receptionist. I’m always middle of the main, I’ve always led a very normal life…, I ride the subway, I ride the bus… It just shows that whatever plan you have for your life, it’s wrong.”

The pilot is very strong. Perfect vehicle for Linney.
I listened to Howard Stern’s “tirade” when he originally stated it and it was nothing of the sort.
For weeks he had been praising Gabourey Sidibe for her work in Precious. He really seemed to love that film and was telling his fans they should all go see it in theaters. He was one of the first broadcasters to even talk about the film and give it notice.
Stern only stated the obvious when he said she would have trouble finding a career in Hollywood because of her weight, continuing that she would likely be relegated to overweight roles and her lifestyle was extremely unhealthy.
His words were taken out of context and the press demonized him for it, never once mentioning the praise he originally gave Gabourey for her incredible acting abilities.
Thank you. I too listened to Stern and was amazed at how blatantly the media just lied about what he actually said and never once even attempted to put his comments into context. All he ever said was what anyone with any sense thinks, and for that he’s a monster. Dear God … and we wonder how we can’t have honest conversations about anything these days!
Beautiful “GGR” nod.
I heard the specific comments too. Stern got taken out of context on this like Limbaugh gets taken out of context.
Stern came at her from a very negative place, and no amount of Rovian history-rewriting by Sternbots is going to change that.
No one is more precious than Oliver Platt. He was amazing in “Please Give.” Can’t wait!
Everything Stern said is true. She is not just chubby — like way too many Americans, she is clearly unhealthy. Telling her it’s okay to be that size is like telling a drunk it’s okay to keep drinking.
lol. please.
limbaugh doesnt get taken out of context.
he takes facts, (sometimes facts about things he knows absolute zero about) and twists them to fit into his context.
howard stern is disgusting
