At the top of NBC’s executive session, NBC Uni TV Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin announced that a couple of series will premiere early behind the final episodes of America’s Got Talent. The second season of Parenthood will launch on Sept. 14, after the second-to-last episode of Talent. New Friday drama Outlaw will get a sneak preview after the Wednesday finale of Talent.
Additionally, primetime entertainment president Angela Bromstad said the network has extended its production deal with Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey’s Film 44, which will now take over the NBC pilot for Prime Suspect, which the network plans to shoot off-cycle. Alexandra Cunningham (Desperate Housewives) is now writing the script for the adaptation of the iconic British series, which will be a 2-hour pilot. (Hank Steinberg was originally tapped as writer last development season) NBC also announced a development deal with Gladiator producers Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes.
Another piece of news, Rob Lowe will now be a regular on Parks & Recreation. And 30 Rock will do a live episode on Oct. 14, going back to the SNL roots of creator/star Tina Fey and frequents SNL host Alec Baldwin.
Gaspin, whose last TCA appearance came in the midst of the Conan O’Brien-Jay Leno debacle in January, opened the NBC executive session by saying: “I’m happy to be at TCA under different circumstances than last time. I’d like to thank ABC for creating the headlines this time.”
Asked whether he or NBC Uni CEO Jeff Zucker or anyone else at the company has had any conversations with former Showtime entertainment president Robert Greenblatt about joining NBC, Gaspin’s answer was: “No, no, no, no, no. We haven’t had conversations.” Asked again if his bosses might have met with Greenblatt, he said “I have asked (them) and the answer was no.”
Bromstad was asked to address the plans for The Office post Steve Carell, who is leaving at the end of next season after playing the lead, boss Michael Scott, for the past 6 years.
“The Office producers have a plan for who is going to replace Michael, there is going to be some mystery leading up to who that might be, Bromstad said, adding after the panel that there will be internal and external candidates interviewed just like in any job search situation. Responding to suggestions that Carell has been such an integral part of The Office that it might be best to end the series at his exit, Bromstad fired back: “Would we have ended ER when George Clooney left? That would be a shame.”
After the session, Gaspin confirmed that the network has signed Talent judge Piers Morgan in a new 3-year deal and has allowed him to pursue a job at CNN as Larry King’s replacement. He confirmed that the setup would involve NBC and CNN sharing Morgan and admitted NBC got concessions in return but wouldn’t elaborate on specifics.
At the panel, Gaspin admitted that the network had made mistakes over the past several years. ”We made too many changes too quickly from a position of weakness,” he said, noting that “we have a lot more stability at the network than we’ve had for quite some time.” Still, he plans to remain aggressive. “We’ve taken too few shots in the past, and we are not going to make that mistake again.”
Gaspin was asked about the eroding ratings for The Tonight Show after the return of host Jay Leno. He was prepared, pulling out a sheet with ratings data suggesting that both his ratings and David Letterman’s fluctuate. “I think it’s too early to make any proclamations about anything, and I’m not worried,” he said. Added Bromstad, “Hopefully we can improve the health of the prime time shows, and that will help Jay as well.”

Launching Parenthood a week early behind Americas Got Talent is a really smart move on NBCs part.
I think I am going to miss Steve Carell no matter what and I don’t know if I will continue watching the show. Its not even just about Steve Carell but his character, and I just don’t see another character or actor filling the gap once Steve is gone.
I will not watch Jay Leno, I still think its a disgrace what NBC put Conan through.
I used to think the same way. I had seen the original British version of “The Office”, and thought the American version would never measure up. As you can see, I was very wrong. They are both very good. And they turned out to be very different shows with the same name.
I do agree with your comment on Conan. The way he has handled the situation will explain later why he is on top in late night TV.
I will not be watching the office when Steve Carrel is gone! It just won’t be the same without him. I really loved his character, and I also think I don’t want to see another character, or actor filling the gap once Steve is gone. The office is my favorite show to watch, and I don’t ever miss a episode. Matter a fact I’ve been watching them all on DVD for the past couple of weeks. So Steve you will be greatly missed, and I wish you would stay. Your awesome!!!
“Would we have ended ER when George Clooney left?”
No. Should they have ended it after Anthony Edwards left? Yes.
I’d like to see Ricky Gervais replace Steve Carell on “the Office.”
that would be completely awesome.
If they get Ricky Gervais to come in for The Office it would be perfect. *Crossing fingers on that one* it would be up to Ricky, he would want some serious $$$$
While this would be awesome, someone as hot as Ricky Gervais isn’t going to join a show on it’s way out.
Sure, but the show would not be on it’s way out if it got Ricky. Actually, Gervais knew when to end the original Office as to keep it a gem for evermore. I’m actually pretty confident he won’t hop on board.
I agree and I’m glad you said that. I said that to a friend of mine a few days ago and it just seemed right.
My thoughts exactly
lol, doubtful
I think they should have Ryan or Dwight be manager, maybe even Kelly as I know many laughs would def be happening. Or maybe even David Wallace to come back
Lets see…
If you’re thinking of an existing cast member…can you imagine Kevin or Creed??? Or Toby & just let everyone walk all over him like Michael did. ALL I KNOW IS THEY CANNOT REPLACE MICHAEL WITH PIERS MORGAN! He’s “by the book”..that would ruin the show. They need a goofy type (a Jim Carey type actor)so it remains an unconventional office that we ALL wished we worked at!
Perfect person to replace Carrell: Rhys Darby from Flight of the Conchords! Can you think of a better manager? He could be moved in from Sabre’s international office!
Actually, that’s the first good suggestion I’ve heard so far. Having a Murray-type manager would be awesome.
Took the words right out of my mind. Such a good actor, he may be the best candidate for the job, his persona in character and off are spot on for this role
how would that be awsome? it wiould be complete shit! Did you know that Ricky gervais already was on the original “The Office” in Uk or w.e it was? probly not because it was only 1 season long and it was complete shit compared to the american version.
I hate the fact that steve correll is leaveing but i will still watch the show because i love all the other characters aswell.
BUT, if they put Ricky G as the replacement to “Micheal Scott” i will not watch another minute of the new seasons.
the american version of “The Office” has been a great series so far so why would they risk many more seasons by haveing the manager from the failure of the uk version?
Steve Carell is the real deal in the office. The primary source of the comedy. I’ll be excited to see who will take up his spot and how they’re going to sort this out to continue.
ER wasn’t as good after Clooney left. Nothing is going to fix Leno’s ratings after the CoCo incident. The Community is the only show left vworth watching, and NBC butchers any sport they cover.
Jay Leno sucks!
Jay Leno is ruining the Tonight Show! Conan never should have been forced out.
ER’s ratings were often #1 overall AND in key demos when Clooney left. THE OFFICE consistently finishes fourth in its time slot, and rarely makes it into the Top 35 overall.
THAT’S why NBC didn’t cancel ER when Clooney left. Bromstad’s spin is laughable.
Fourth in its time slot…um, what are you looking at? Total viewers maybe, but it certainly was/is not finishing last in the 14-8-49 age demographic. I’m pretty sure it consistently finishes second to Grey’s Anatomy. Can anyone back me up on that fact? I know it actually beat Grey’s once this year.
Sorry, mistyped… 18-49 age demo, not 14-8-49.
The Office is quirky. If you have never worked in an office, you might never get it (I’ve never met a teacher who thought it was funny). Maybe that’s why The Office never makes number 1.
I am a teacher and I think The Office is hilarious! Funny is funny, but some people just don’t appreciate dry wit.
I’m a Cardiologist who loves the office more than ER !
I am a teacher who LOVES The Office.
I am a teacher and the Office is my favorite show. My wife is also a teacher and also loves the show. Michael Scott reminds me of my principal, in some ways, but nowhere near as funny.
Listen, I’m a teacher, and I think The Office is maybe the funniest show, ever! Not only do I get it, I love it!
I’m a teacher and LOVE the Office! I think it is one fo the best shows in recents years. I relate it a lot to Arrested Devlopment and I would love to see either David Cross or Will Arnett replace Carell. Gervais would be wonderful but sometimes Brit humor/actors don’t cross over too well. I would be super, awesome, extatic if they actually moved some of the characters (Cross or Arnett’s) from Arrested Devlopment. Anyway, that’s just a crazy sitcom dream of mine! LOL I look forward to seeing how they play it out.
Forget Will Arnett (too over the top) and Ricky Gervais (doubt he wants to revisit his own past)…
…but I still say the perfect replacement would be Aziz Ansari, currently on PARKS AND REC and formerly of SCRUBS…
If they go internal, I say, “Make Dwight the boss!”
Ok, I’m sorry to bring this up, but I hope you are not an English teacher. It is spelled ecstatic.
I’m a teacher who LOVES the office also. I also know several teachers in my building who LOVE the office. There, now you have officially met several teachers who love the office.
I am also a teacher & The Office is my absolute FAVORITE show!! its hilarious
Mary Fail….Teacher win
anyone remember what Northern Exposure was like after Rob Morrow left??? no good. The Office should end gracefully
True! However, “Northern Exposure” also got new producers and new writers, so that was another reason why it went downhill — the consistency was altered.
Can we skip all this, fire these people, and just get To Greenblatt???
Diddo
Replace Carell with James Caan so he can get revenge on Kathy Bates for “Misery”. Or replace Carell with Conan.
I agree with Bill and Michael. Jay Leno sucks. Just listen to his monologue. Really listen to each joke he tells. They are not funny. It’s no wonder that Johnny Carson preferred David Letterman.
That would be a genius move on NBCs part! So… they probably wouldn’t do it.
Exactly.
I would like to see Craig Ferguson join The Office.. Nobody will ever replace the greatness of Steve Carell as Michael Scott, but Craig Ferguson is a comedic genius that will definitely gather as many laughs as Steve Carell. Check out The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on CBS to see exactly what I’m talking about.
PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT! I hate Craig Ferguson almost as much as I love the Office. I’d hate to have to stop watching! What would I do with my Thursday nights?
Seriously, that was one of the funniest interviews I have ever seen on late night television. The awkward silence was hilarious. Never thought of Ferguson, he might make it!
i don’t think CBS would allow that to happen all though i think he’ make a great replacement. he’s hilarious and was always good on the drew carey show
Ricky would be awesome I would still watch if they did that
Ricky gervais would be a Horrible replacement for Steve carell! Dwight would be the perfect canadiate!! Or Jim carrey would be great!!
Craig Ferguson already did his “Office” thing with his role in “The Drew Carey Show.”
I’m questioning the relevance of “Prime Suspect.” A lot of the initial drama came from having a woman in charge of a police investigation team, but then the original premiered 20 years ago. I don’t know if the subject has the same juice, especially with “The Closer” mining the same territory so well!
What about Todd Packer… The Packman? Perfect!!! and the only option that makes any sense. Steve Carrel is the whole show right now, but Todd Packer people! C’mon NBC doi something right… if not The Pack, end show. Thankyou.
That would be PERFECT!! he was like Micheal’s best friend!
Wow that would be amazingly perfect didn’t even think about that one but it would definitely be the offices savior
Will Ferrell is the ideal replacement for SC. But, it would never happen.
Whitout steve The Office will die a slow and horrible death!
Craig Ferguson sucks. He just has a cool accent. That’s it
The latest NBCU TV powers-that-be prove that anyone appointed to run TV by Jeff Zucker is, by definition, clueless. I can’t think of anything more assinine than trying to make the Office–a show that has already had a plenty-long and successful run–go on without Steve Carrell as Michael Scott. Typical conglomerate-think, but I expect nothing less (nothing more?) from Zucker’s flock.
I’ll allow, however, that the idea of bringing in Ricky Gervais MIGHT be inspired enough to make the changeover work. But with the exception of M*A*S*H, L&O and (arguably) ER, trying to continue a show after the departure of a star or a major format change is almost certainly doomed to failure. In the very best case, you wind up with such a DIFFERENT show in spirit, tone and sensibility that you almost may as well end up and start a new show.
