After a popular Nikita movie and series, why retell the story yet again in a new series? It’s a legitimate question and one the writer of the upcoming CW series Nikita Craig Silverstein asked himself when Warner Bros. TV approached him with the idea to do something with the title. “I took it upon myself to find a way — could it be done fresh? Could we have a take where you didn’t know how this story was going to end? And that’s when I came upon the idea of following Nikita (Maggie Q) after she had left the agency which is a chapter that’s never been told, and at the same time doing justice to the origin story of Nikita, that dark fairy tale of taking a girl and changing her life, changing her identity, and the kind of Pygmalion aspect of transforming her into a killer, a beautiful killer and giving her etiquette lessons and all that stuff. We’re doing that with the character of Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca). You don’t know which way this girl is going to go, you don’t know how the story is going to end. So it’s not a rehash.”
McG hit on the empowered female characters theme in Nikita. “From my experience with Charlie’s Angels on down, it’s just I like the idea of empowered female characters that don’t apologize for being beautiful, but are very, very intelligent and multi-dimensional, and I think Maggie nails that voicing.”
Director Danny Cannon shed some light on the action-packed pilot’s budget. “I’m very proud that this pilot cost a third of what other pilots cost this year. And that’s because I did a cable show right before this that taught me how to go even faster. But it’s not about just speed. A lot of it is to do with what’s the story about? Service the story. I mean, we could all use helicopters and blow more things up, but that’s got nothing to do with the story. And television has always been about characters and stories. So I actually get more creative with less money, I believe.
And star Maggie Q, who was very funny in her ad-libbing at the CW upfront presentation once again offered some comic relief. Here is her reaction to a critic’s assumption that she probably started doing martial arts at a very young age: “I’m half Asian. So immediately people go, ‘Oh, well, you do kung fu.’ Like we all, that’s what we do. We wake up. We do kung fu. We brush our teeth. That’s what we do.” And no, she wasn’t into martial arts early on, she was a runner and a swimmer.

Maggie Q, please take me to Q-School.
Saw the pilot already. The concept is a fresh take. The execution was great. The CW is lucky to have this one. Everyone on the show did terrific work.
And I loved this comment from Cannon:
“A lot of it is to do with what’s the story about? Service the story. I mean, we could all use helicopters and blow more things up, but that’s got nothing to do with the story. And television has always been about characters and stories. So I actually get more creative with less money, I believe.”
It’s true. The telling of the story is very economical and gets the job done.
I would watch Maggie Q drink coffee for an hour on TV or anywhere else. End of story.
She seriously needs to eat a burger… seriously.
i also saw the pilot and thought it was a great take on the story. I used to watch the original on usa when i was a child at night and had the biggest crush on Peta Wilson
No Peta Wilson? No Roy DuPuis? No sale. This cheap, lame knock-off of an old late 1990s Warners TV title will fail. Hopefully, this will be the final nail in the CW coffin. Let it die.
I would hope the writers followed suit on the old Classic of LaFemme Nikita. Michael & Nikita had a very deep and gentle romance, the only expressions Michael showed were with Nikita, a slight smile of his approving pleasure of her and a lot of loving body language and was even making love to her with his eyes, in fact between the both of them. Michael was a cold blooded assasin, and there were NEVER many words or ever any facial expressions in any of his work or talks. In fact there were only a few loving words to Nikita most of it was in his body language and eyes that said it all. What a simple, refreshing love story. In my opinion if it is not much like the old series I won’t be watching. (I looked forward to the romance, and how he always looked out for her, and took the blame even when it wasn’t his fault.) I know Shane West can pull it off, but from the previews I have seen he has a frown and hard look, that won’t work for me. The writers have allowed to many facial expressions for him, when that wasn’t Michael at all. I realize the show has to be changed somewhat, but NOT the relationships or actions of the two stars.
PS Michael never frowned, in fact he was always blank. Between that lack of emotions, and the all the emotions he showed toward Nikita, that is what really made the show. Not all the shoot m up bang bangs.
I wholeheartedly agree with your comment. Roy DuPuis played Michael with almost a robotic coldness that was so perfect for his character. And Peta Wilson, as Nikita, played a perfect role as a conflicted and vulnerable secret agent. While I like Shane West, he is definitely not Roy DuPuis, and I’ll always only see Peta as Nikita.
I agree 100% with you. This is such a false, pale imitation of the original. I would love to have seen a pick up from when michael tells nikita “he won’t always need me.” speaking of his son and why he needed to escape section. That would have been awesome, even now it would be great to see a finish. Peta is the only nikita and Michael – well there is none like him.
Could be some age differences, but I agree, Peta and Roy will always be Michael and Nikita to me!
I must confess I found OLD NIKITA with Peta very boring..I’m sorry!
But I feel this NEW NIKITA it’ll be great!
Cant wait to see the new NIKITA ant perfect cast on it!
I’m really excited for this show. I miss dollhouse so this could be it’s replacement for me. Imean if 4 million people watched it’s first season what will this show get.
The original LaFemme Nikita series is a classic and could never be improved upon. The chemistry between Peta Wilson and Roy DuPuis has never been duplicated on ANY television series I have ever seen. You can’t force it; it’s either there or it isn’t. Also, the casting of the roles in the original series was so perfect! From Operations and Madeline to Birkhoff and Walter, it was simply a perfect cast! I will watch the pilot of the new series and try to keep an open mind, but in my opinion, there will never be another ‘Nikita’.
I agree with the person who said that Maggie Q needs to eat a burger. Poke her in the chest with your baby finger and she’d fall over. Send her out on a windy day and she will blow away. I am loyal to one Nikita show and that was La Femme Nikita staring Peta Wilson and Roy Dupuis.
I agree with two points: The chemistry between Roy DuPuis and Peta Wilson was indeed magical and I doubt that could ever be duplicated again. The chemistry between the two of them is what drew many of the loyal fans in. Second, the casting in the USA series was incredible. Amanda in the new can not hold a candle to Madeline, the new Berkoff is a joke, Operations in the old series was PERFECT compared to this new schmuch, and there IS NO Walter at all!
No, the new Nikita may find a loyal fan base with its kick ass action, but the characters, the acting, and the story lines of the USA series makes the new series look like a teeny bopper wanna be.
As a third note: I hope the fans of the USA series will rise up and voice a request: Like Adrian Paul went on to make a movie based on the Highlander TV series (technically the fourth Highlander movie), let’s all hope and raise our voices in requesting that a new La Femme Nikita movie be made starring our beloved Roy DuPuis and Peta Wilson, showing their reunion after Michael has a chance to raise Adam in the civilian world, where the TV series ended. That is a movie I would wait in line overnight for! Anybody agree?
I agree with Nytehawk 100%, especially on the Movie. Also, I think the new Nikita had great potental, but all was spent once the pilot aired. Whoever did the writing simply watched La Femme Nikita 1 or 2 times and decided to use the charactors without really understanding what made them WORK.
New Berkoff is nothing but a sack of puss and has ZERO charactor depth with nothing to related to.
New Nikita seems 2d. Her fight against Division is 2d. If the audience was able to know the boyfriend that Division murdered maybe it would be more real. Also, not to bag on Michelle Q about her physical build, but how in h@ll could she take down a 180 lbs guy. The writers really needed to handle the fight scenes with much more care.
New Michael I don’t know what to say. Nothing good; nothing bad. I’m sure they will say that Roy Depuis didn’t talk much, but that lead to a number of questions and curosity especially with all of the surrounding emotional chaos in section one. With nothing much surrounding New Michael, what is there to say??
The rest of the charactors aren’t 1/2 bad, just lack better surroundings, problems, issues, etc.
The writers also missed how, at the control of Operations and Madiline, Section One would coil upon itself to acheive the objective. At the same time this coiling would twist, stretch, distort the remaining charactors which brought INTEREST to the show.
Unfortunately, I think Nikita jumped the shark and writters cut it off at the knees and all during the pilot—I’ve never seen that done before. Either do one of two things, let it die or get with it writters.
Amen to this, Nythehawk. Nothing to add, you’ve said it all.Roy and Peta are very hard, if not impossible to be replaced or copied as Nikita and Michael.Chemistry was written all over of them. From top till toe. Same for Eugene,Alberta, Don and Mathew: A once in a lifetime cast….combined with the atmosphere, storylines and twists of the original serie of La Femme Nikita they’ve created this mesmerizing show and I wonder why WB even considered of making a reboot/makeover. Why using the names of this apart but so unique cultserie if you want to do something completely different with it. MaggieQ as Nikita? Don’t make me laugh. Same for Shane.
To all who said that they like the new Nikita, sorry guys this new Nikita does not come close to the original TV show of La Femme Nikita. Peta Wilson is Nikita and Roy Dupuis is Michael. All actors of the La Femme Nikita show gave breadth and soul to their characters. The NEW Nikita sucked big time.
I agree 100% with Nytehawk that I am one of the fans who would wait in line for a movie made for TV for my beloved show.
Warner Brothers – Listen to the cries of the LFN fans.
Here, Here! I get this is supposedly when Nikita escaped with Michaels help but seriously its so anememic to the original.
OMG!! Nikita is the best show ever!
i never saw the first one, but i bet its not as good as this one!
;p theres so much acction, and the romance/thing between micheal and nikitaa is amazzin i cant wait to see whats going to happen next!!
Oh, I guess this is the audience these writers are aiming for. Like, OMG.
Micheal is soo sexyy! and Nikita is a really great show, i cant get enough of it.So much drama and amazing scenes. I hope theres alot more shows after this, because its outstanding!! the haters dont have to watch it if they dont want too, but i know im gonna! :p
If I watched the original Nikita then perhaps I would have a different mindset, but at the moment, I’m definitely into this show! For everyone that claims this newer Nikita is nothing compared to La Femme Nikita, it’s not like you have to watch it. Personally, I can’t wait for the next episode- you need to have something to look forward to each week, don’t you? I’ll be waiting for more chemistry from Michael and Nikita…
First off, I would like to say that I have seen the movie La Femme Nikita, La Femme Nikita TV series (multiple times), and now the new Nikita… I would like to say that I agree 100% with everyone who LOVED the original…Not going to lie, season 4-5 were a little shaky as far as believability (like Alias), but overall it was a FANTASTIC show… Chemestry, Acting everything about it was great…
AS for the new…I think its AWESOME as well..both are great TV…you have to accept that the people behind the scenes did not want the just remake la femme nikita…and while I wish they followed the old storyline at least, I do like that they put there own little twist to it…I am excited to watch it every week…
To the people who hate, pretend its a brand new show… pretend its called “Atikin” instead of “Nikita” and just enjoy it because it really is a good show…if you sit there and try to nit-pick every difference then you are just ignorant…the TV series, which was BASED off the movie, did not follow in the movies footsteps, they put there own twist into it…and the result was greatness…a similar situation is going on right now…so just watch it with an open mind and eventually you will see it for the great new show that it is…
Saw all of the original series and have the DVDs. Please everybody, find a way to see the original if you can and then comment. The original was filled with mystery. Did Michael really care for Nikita or was it part of the mission? Were any of the characters connected before Section? Where were they, anyway? What justifies torture? Operations and Madeline were terrific together… cold, hard and sociopathic.. or not? I’ve only seen three episodes of the new so I’ll reserve comment until I’ve seen more…
you are so right. this new cast is kinda lame. madeline walter burkoff were so good especially madeline..
