There is one element in Paul Lee’s background that in my opinion makes him well equipped for his new job as ABC Entertainment Group president. It’s not his 6-year tenure as president of ABC Family, he will find soon enough that broadcast TV is a whole new ball game. It’s not his degree from Oxford either, it is probably too highbrow for the populist nature of U.S. broadcast TV. It is Lee’s very first job out of college as a BBC reporter stationed in Belfast, Northern Ireland, covering the conflict during a particularly critical period. If he wasn’t afraid to step into a real-life crossfire, he probably won’t be intimidated by facing critics and reporters at TCA on Sunday or tough talent negotiations and difficult decisions at ABC in the future.
Lee, who turned 50 a couple of weeks ago, is asked to build a third consecutive TV network almost from scratch. He launched BBC America and put the channel on the map with such series as the British version of The Office and Changing Rooms, both of which were successfully remade by U.S. networks, NBC and TLC (Trading Spaces). Then at ABC Family, he inherited a neglected channel whose purchase had been deemed one of the worst business deals in TV history that was stuffed with repurposed ABC shows, no original series and a dying original movie franchise. He rebuilt the channel with a demo-focused original fare like The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Now, he is facing a similar brand rebuilding task at ABC, which is in dire need of hit original scripted series after years of high-profile flops. During the past year alone, the list includes FlashForward, The Forgotten, Eastwick, Happy Town, Hank, The Deep End and this summer’s Scoundrels and The Gates.
I find it interesting that Disney more than any other company is relying almost exclusively on its internal executive roster for top division hires. Lee is going from ABC Family to ABC. Disney Channels Worldwide topper Rich Ross moved to head Walt Disney Studios. Ross’ job at Disney Channels went to another veteran Disney executive, Carolina Lightcap. A few years back, ABC executive Andrea Wong was tapped to run Lifetime. And Lee’s predecessors at ABC, McPherson, Susan Lyne, Lloyd Braun and Stu Bloomberg all came out of ABC or Disney’s TV production divisions.
And one last note. There has been a lot of clamoring lately about the large number of British actors landing the leads in U.S. pilots. With Lee’s appointment, we now have two British leading men at the U.S. broadcast networks: Lee and Fox entertainment chairman Peter Rice. That’s a first for as long as I can remember. With Simon Cowell still the most influential figure in the reality space, Rice and Lee running two of the Big 4 U.S. networks and more and more British actors toplining American series, we may be in the middle of a British TV invasion.

I’m guessing that Lee won’t be afraid to take risks on shows then?
True, Disney does rely on internal talent, which is a plus. However, I still wonder how things would’ve ended up had Mark Pedowitz ended up top dog at ABC. Very well-liked exec who was a loyal longtime ABC company man. Glad he chased greener pastures after being passed up to run the network.
Mazel tov to Paul Lee! He’s incredibly bright, and very even-tempered.
This guy knows comedy, which the Brits are dong about ten times better than the Americans at the moment.
Your observation doesn’t apply. British comedy doesn’t translate in a real Broadcast way in America. Ricky Gervais is a genius but The Office had to be translated for the U.S. by Greg Daniels.
so because he’s British, he’s funny? and there have been so many hilarious comedy hits on ABC Family since he’s been there? you’re right!
Will shows like V improve in quality with Paul Lee at the helm?
Yeah, I’m sure that the FIRST thing Paul will do is hunker down in the Writers’ Room to help save your beloved science fiction show.
ABC (as well as all the networks) doesn’t have a new hit drama because ABC goes to the same creators over and over again, and the same creators churn out the same shows with just different, prettier faces. The audience knows this and they’re tired of it. Maybe if Paul Lee takes chances with new voices, new creators then maybe he’ll have a hit drama (or three). Case in point, FX wouldn’t be FX if it didn’t take a chance with Shawn Ryan and his network-rejected show called THE SHIELD. So to Paul Lee… take a chance. Think outside the network box. The grass is way greener.
Lee is a prince of a guy, and while Family’s originals have helped forge a brand, they don’t make cable’s top ratings or critical tier. Zapala’s an unsung hero over there, it’s the acquired stuff that moved Family ahead in the ratings ranks
HOW does Anne Sweeney keep her job? What does she contribute? Iger, do the right thing and replace her. You’ve evidently recognized that any successful division under her had nothing to do with her, she’s worthless.
Ditto on Anne Sweeney. She has never had one creative thought and she is mean-spirited, petty and vindictive. No matter what anyone thinks of Steve McPherson – he is miles and miles ahead of the token that has become Ms. Sweeney.
Iger will get to her sooner or later. Hopefully, sooner. Wouldn’t you love to be a fly on the wall with people like David Westin or Geri Wang?
Anne Sweeney keeps her job by making money, boatloads of it for Disney, the divisions she is in charge of are Disney’s biggest profit centers, $1.3 billion last quarter, vs. $130 million for ABC. ESPN, Disney Channel, Disney Cable networks (A&E, Lifetime etc. ABC Family) you might not like the shows on Disney Channel but they are powerhouses when it comes to cash. You might not have seen High School Musical, Hannah Montana, or the rest of the Disney Channel franchises, but the cash they brought in vs. the cost is what keeps people like Anne Sweeney, Ross, and Paul Lee in jobs with Disney. Disney rewards its own. It’s about the MONEY.
Disney should have done this years ago, it’s cable that makes the money for Disney, and it’s broadcast that pisses it away, with expensive shows like V, The Forgotten, Eastwick, all from WB. The one ABC hit this year Modern Family was from FOX which means Disney will never see syndication money.
Anne has NOTHING to do with ESPN – which is run by George Bodenheimer. ESPN is responsible for $1B of the $1.3B for the Cable Networks Group.
C’mon, people, when has a network outsider EVER come in to a big 4 network and turned it around. The previous commenter is correct–this is all about Ann Sweeney and her failures. She’s only comfortable with un-charismatic, nerdy, corporate non-creatives who will do as she says. NO CONFLICT. Time to either sell the network, which is what everyone knows IGER really wants, or dump her. As bad a guy as Steve seemed to be, she’s truly the scary one. Enjoy fourth place–you’re going to be there for a lonnnngggg time.
Can we please see the final two episodes of “Eastwick” now?
“Eastwick?” Can we see a return of “FlashForward,” please?
PAUL! Please please please cancel Jimmy Kimmel Live. That show is 5 years past its freshness date and needs to go. Kimmel is terrible to look at and the show isn’t at all relevant. Make him go away!
ABC needs some muscular shows from real writers. Shonda’s medical pilot should NEVER have been picked up over far better candidates. Matt Gross is best friends with McPherson and got his Quincy show picked up. My friend was asked to come up with a show all about wine for ABC last pilot season to make McPHerson. Seriously. To cater to his interest. Just what America wants is a one hour drama about wine.
They go to the same writers over and over and pound their vision into submission.
Desperate Housewives was a spec. Not developed by them. Franklin that is the last original show on that network.
Any exec who greenlit The MiddleMan deserves a shot in my book. Go Paul!!
Why didn’t Brian Frons get the Lee gig? He’s done a great job in daytime?
