Justin Marks had been at WME. He’s writing the Universal pic The Raven, a feature based on the 6-minute short film by Ricardo de Montreuil. Mark Wahlberg is attached. Marks also adapted the DC Comics series Super Max aka The Green Arrow for David Goyer, and Shadow of the Colossus for Sony Pictures Entertainment. His credits include 20,000 League Under the Sea: Captain Nemo, the film that Disney put in dry dock. Marks continues with manager Adam Kolbrenner.

So this guy essentially writes a wordless, 6 minute, action sequence based on a character with no background or definable characteristics (other than the inexplicable fact that he is 1) running and 2) “magical”) and now he gets a picture deal? Talk about bullshit, they should be signing the filmmaker and the production kids because this is not a writer’s short, this is a crew’s short. It’s plain as day that in the six minute running time there is no plot, there is only production value. Ah well hollywood, hopefully you can make another mindless thriller that trades content for substance and leaves everyone wondering where the next great writer will come from.
Peyton,
A few things:
1) Justin Marks didn’t write the short.
2) Justin Marks is writing the feature adaptation of the short based on the idea by the director. He got the job based on his past work.
3) This article is about him being signed by CAA from WME, not being signed because of The Raven.
4) CAA did sign the filmmaker. Maybe you should be an agent.
he didn’t write the short, fool.
You know… if you guys wrote instead of just being bitter about everything and wasting your time posting caustic vomit on message boards maybe you’d have careers, too. Just a thought.
Why no mention of the horrible STREET FIGHTER or his awful VOLTRON script?
You forgot HE-MAN too. This kid gets writing gigs, but can’t get anything made. You’d think producers would put two and two together before hiring him for yet another writing gig.
First off, idiot. He was hired BECAUSE they wanted to make it. No writer has the power to get a movie made whether it’s good or not. Now back to cleaning toilets.
He wrote Street Fighter?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ahem.
Who was he with at WME?
Yes, I’d like to know too. Anyone?
Kestel
Craig Kestel.
He had been with Craig Kestel, I believe. Despite his failures, Craig kept him working. Typical.
not trying to put him down at all, just curious why on earth he’d leave an agency that got him all of those big budget projects after his only real credit is “street fighter” – which i didn’t see but doesn’t seem like the launching grounds for “20,000 leagues” type material…
WM not E got him the gigs…
peyton is an idiot!
Hack. His scripts are all one-step deals and he’s fired then rewritten. Flavor of the second. And he’s already forgotten.
You deserve a cookie.
How’s the mail room at WME? Do they treat you well? Think you’ll ever get to wear the big boy pants and hold Ari’s balls?
Last.resort is totally right: those two movie are seriously BAD writing. Kudos to his manager and agent for getting him work such as 20000 League… UnBelievable.
Yes, Lusvardelli. Bad writing is something you seem to know about all too well as evident by your atrocious grammar.
Point taken, dp. English is clearly not my first language, so please forget some mistakes. Still not a fan of Justin’s work.
I don’t want to be the sour grape here, and I’m not trying to put the cart of thinking before the horse of doing (It’s just that I can’t find any confirmation anywhere, if production is leaving the protagonist in tact). I’m hoping to high heavens, they let the protagonist a brown male. It’s really cool that Wahlberg snatched this up and is attached, but it would be exceptional if he was getting behind a brown male superhero, by producing and co-starring. To that note; one of the more unique aspects about the short was the amount of latin folks in the credit crawl. It’ll be interesting to see how production honors those numbers when crewing up for the feature.
Adapt that 6 minute short? Was there even a plot to it? Wasn’t it just a dude running away from hovering robots? And, this gets an attachment and goes to script? This is pretty much why Hollywood sucks. Congrats to the writer. But, this project even being a project is silly.
Don’t judge Marks by his produced credit. He is a solid writer — one of the best young ones in town. Big loss for WME — I know for a fact that Ari wasn’t happy.
Sure sure. Ari never met him.
“The first thing that I ever learned about Charlie Nash, that Justin Marks, our screenwriter, showed me, was that Charlie Nash, his likes, he’s got one, justice. He’s got two: scotch. And his dislikes, he’s got one: injustice.”
Good thing you’re just a Justin Marks Fan and not him because what you just wrote makes absolutely no sense. Learn English. They teach it all over.
Thanks, because I was quoting Chris Klein quoting Justin Marks. If you had taken two seconds to use Google…
Super Max was a great script. The kid is talented. And I’m still at WME.
Justin is a terrific hack. I mean, terrific! The fact that he keeps failing upwards is beyond me. Somehow he’s gotten this “fanboy” rep and his enthusiasm gets him the jobs but THE SCRIPTS HE CHURNS OUT ARE TERRIBLE. Like throw it out terrible. And he’s gotten one really bad movie made, so I ask you — how is this news?!
Marks was repped by Craig Kestel, great guy.
says you
Justin made He-Man cool. That shit ain’t easy. CAA is lucky to have him.
Have any of you bitter has beens and never weres read a script by Marks? I have. He’s a great writer.
Not bitter, Jeff L… Realistic.
If you thought his he-man script was any good, with the two swords nonsense then you are either related to him or working with him. All I have to say is two words, Street Fighter.
To all the haters out there, know that this guy is talented. Have you ever thought that Streetfighter debacle might be a result of Bartkowiak, the man who brought us the wonderful train wreck called Doom? Do your homework and read his Streetfighter and then go read Super Max.
Streetfighter the movie SUCKED. but the script was dope. That happens all the time because of directors, so go read the script if you’re slamming Justin and you’ve only seen the movie.
I’ve worked with Justin on two projects. he has an incredible imagination and great ideas, and is a stellar in the room, that’s why he keeps getting hired. very few writers can break a story and be the closer that puts it into production. get on studio system and tell me what percentage of films that got made had one writer. if it’s more than 3% i’ll buy you a fucking sandwich.
so go do your homework next time before you start slamming people.
Why all the Kestel hate? I saw him at ComiCon and he looked eighty years old. WME won’t be renewing his contract and he’ll be another merger casualty, out on the street selling pencils by the 405.
Justin Marks? Unhirable. Good luck to CAA.
unhirable?
you’re not so bright for three reasons:
1) he was just hired for THE RAVEN
2) he was hired for SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS before that
3) his version of 20k Leagues was about to get made when there was a regime change. They had spent millions on sets in Mexico.
been asked to rewrite three of his scripts — def have read them — and they were all unequivocally bad. must be VERY GOOD in a room.
Brought in to rewrite three of his scripts? Who are you?
Is it really fair that you get to take a shit on Marks but keep your own name anonymous?
well the studios keep hiring him so there’s the pudding for ya.
Justin is good in a room, gets his scripts done on time, and delivers reasonably solid stories. The only problem is that his writing isn’t really inspired in any way. That’s why he’s the go-to guy to knock out first drafts, but also why he doesn’t stay with most projects for too long.
