Once again, I have been asked to compile Elle Magazine’s Women In Hollywood “Power List”. Granted, I hate power lists. But this year, please email me the whys behind your out-of-the-box thinking as well as the usual suspects like executives, producers, writers, publicists, editors, lawyers, agents, managers, financiers, casting directors, marketers, consultants, etc. I’ll be open to your suggestions for the next 2 weeks — and then you’re out of luck.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

She has the power to get your TV show made YOUR way.
That’s why she’s at AMC…
Lana Wachkowski ! PLEASE??
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg
With Oprah’s move to LA, that one seems an obvious choice. Kathryn Bigelow also.
Nzingha Stewart http://atlantapost.com/2010/07/20/networking-with-writer-director-nzingha-stewart/
I agree, been following her career. Very talented!
My mom. I make almost slave wages and can’t support myself although I work 17 hours a day. All for the chance to “make it”. And when I make it I will treat all those that worked for me like I was treated: like crap. Back to the issue at hand my mom is should be on the power list she has been my biggest backer and allowed me to follow my dream against impossible odds. My family isn’t a hollywood family and nothing has been handed to me. Without bher support finacially and mentally I wouldn’t been where I am. Still living the dream!
You are obviously a great kid and I’d be proud if you were one of mine! keep the fight and live the dream!!!
i have one of mine doing the same!!
What about Ryan Seacrest? SHE is just fabulous and talented and has many jobs and has mastered wearing many hats in this town. I think SHE should be #1 on the list. You go Ryan!
Just what we need, another “Women in Power” list!. Jesus, look around and tell me we still need to buff up another list to show women have come so far in the entertainment business. Twenty years ago this made sense but enough already. Women have lot’s of power in this town. More than any other business in the world. One power list a year for all comers is good enough for me. But then what would all the publicists working for these powerful people have to do the rest of the time?
Donna Isaacson 20 Century Fox
Nzingha Stewart gets my vote! Worked under her last year when she directed, “Michael Jackson: Our Icon.” Before that, had been following her music video career for years. Her insight and creativity are unmatched.
Umm, Nikki, aren’t you the easy #1, by now?
Olivia Munn, because, well, she’s Olivia Munn.
Angelina Jolie. She can get any project she wants.
You’re going to have to put yourself on this list or you’re not credible. Let’s be honest: who ISN’T reading you in this town and most of us first thing in the AM, last thing before work day closing. It’s called a rock and a hard place, and fact trumps cries of self-promotion.
This vote is so obvious….I vote you #1, NF.
Miley Cyrus because 1)Being successful herself, she helps employ many people (she once hired someone she knew as an acting coach, and allowd her to direct some Hannah Montana episodes) 2)She can get work for others on other projects e.g. her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth (look at the producer/director relationships) 3)So far, anyone who’s worked with her has gotten a career boost! It looks like Ashley Greene is the next Twilight star that will be breaking out because of the boost she is getting from working with Miley! (I know that works both ways with Miley gaining legitimacy) Go Miley!
Aren’t sex and ethnicity lists getting passé w Obama and the last 2 Supreme Ct justices?
Oh, gotta love white male privilege.
How about screenwriters Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith? 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, Ella Enchanted, She’s the Man, The House Bunny, The Ugly Truth and upcoming One For the Money.
Amen to that. Consistently entertaining, profitable, seriously clever scripts.
How about all of the female film commissioners across the US who have spent every waking moment trying to get financial incentives to give to filmmakers. I know Florida will give away $242 million over the next 5 years to filmmakers who film in Florida.
Amy Miles, CEO – Regal Entertainment Group
I second Kirsten Smith (and her writing partner, Ms. Lutz) Not only are they supremely talented and successful in a very tough field (their movies also tend to be super solid at the Box Office!) they are very nice, down-to-earth people. (Kirsten, I should add, has branched out and written a well-received young adult, coming of age novel about a girl negotiating the tricky shoals of adolescence) Good choice here in this Dynamic Duo!
Another could of women to consider are the super-hyphenates of Queen Latifah (actress-producer/mini-production mogul) and Tyra Banks (model-talk show host-mini production mogul) As women of color, they are pioneers whose success gets overshadowed by Oprah’s mega-empire. It’s good to remind folks that other people have a solid hustle on as well.
And, of course, UBER-producer of sci-fi mega hits Gale Anne Hurd (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss) would be awesome. Her movies have reached cerulean heights in terms of Box Office, but she is an awesome role model for what women can achieve not just in Hollywood but also in a genre that still is male-dominated.
Finally, there’s an inspiring woman who is fast-ascending in The Industry. Her name is Salaam Coleman Smith, the president of the Style Network. Beyond being a creative, tenacious force, she is also beginning to catch big notice, as this mention in Fortune Magazine last year attests to:

Looking forward to seeing who makes your list, Nikki (too bad we can’t nominate you as well! )
Put yourself on the list. You are the modern day Hedda Hopper.
Brigitte Nielsen she is very strong and powerful
Lesli Linka Glatter. She is the top-dog in TV directors (not just female directors either), has been for years, but her reputation was solidified by winning the DGA Award for directing MAD MEN this year. And you couldn’t ask for a nicer, more generous person to recognize.
Robbie Brenner of Relativity Media.
She’s a force.
second that. she’s heroic at her job. there’s no one better. she’s a rare breed of woman that’s been an executive at a studio and a producer on her own and done them both supremely with integrity and conviction.
