EXCLUSIVE: Joe Manganiello, dubbed the hottest new addition to HBO’s True Blood this season, has been promoted to regular for Season 4. He plays hot sexy alpha male werewolf Alcide Herveaux, an iconic character in the The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels that True Blood is based on. There was a lot of buzz surrounding the casting of the role late last year before it went to One Tree Hill alum Manganiello. He was originally supposed to appear only in a handful of episodes, but I hear he impressed the show’s producers and was embraced by True Blood fans, leading to his promotion to regular for next season. True Blood, which was just nominated for a best drama series Emmy, was renewed for a fourth season 2 episodes into the current third season. As for Season 3 of the vampire drama, there is a lot of chatter that some original cast members will be killed off by season’s end. Creator Alan Ball and the cast might shed some light on the show’s upcoming death toll at the True Blood panel at Comic-Con this afternoon.

Thank you SO MUCH for that photo. Good God almighty.
I hope Pam lives. I like her so much. Also Lafayette,Jason,Andy,Eric,Jessica,& Sam.
Alcide needs to live forever…he is my new fav…so glad he is coming back.
Dear god, please let them kill Tara off. I just want her to die violently – she’s so beyond annoying. Without doubt, she’s the poorest written character on the show and maybe on any show on the air. Her arc goes nowhere. She started out as a whiney, insecure, suicidal pain in the ass and she remains that way. I’m not the biggest fan of the show, but she is definitely the major weak spot for me.
I couldn’t agree with you more, re: Tara. She ruins it for me, I have to get up and go occupy myself with doing the dishes while she’s on screen – horrible actor. You can tell the writers know that all she can do is look horrified and scream and cry, so now that’s all she does… Please don’t make her undead – she’ll be around for eternity then!
I love Tara and the actress who portrays her, she’s been beat down and broken hearted but she is due for a big return to her badassness.
I think the actress is sufficiently talented, but the language the writer’s have written for her is atrocious. I wince everytime Tara has a scene because I know the “F” word will be employed in new and imaginitive ways by the character, giving her a classless and ignorant persona. I think the writers should either kill her off or expand her character and make her more the southern gentile woman she should be (with only the occasional expletive). And frankly, the friendship between Sookie and Tara just isn’t believable for me – there doesn’t seem to be any chemistry between the two actresses as far as being life long friends.
I agreee, please get rid of Tara. She’s so annoying. I hate every scene with her. Her character is played out. Time to move on. Alcide is a welcome addition to the show. It needed some “new’ blood.
I tape the show just so I can fast forward any scenes with Tara. She is absolutely horrible!! In the books she was pretty much an innocent, kinda friend to Sookie. She certainly was NOT an important character. PLEASE let her be killed off…soon
amen. She only appears sporatically in the books, and certainlly not as an annoying diversion from what we should be watching. Namely eric and alcide. With their shirts off.
Hope he takes some acting lessons before next season.
Apparently his range is yelling and growling.
Oh my how true is that…
he’s a werewolf…
True Blood Season 3 is one of the best shows on television.
I’m gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there.
Season 2 was bad enough, and with season 3 starting off as awful as it is, my wife watches this show alone now.
showoff!
Great guy, great actor. Did I mention he’s from Pittsburgh?
Hmmmm. This is one casting decision (and writing direction) I can’t get behind. On the show, he’s kind of a boring wuss, while in the book he was …. I don’t know- brooding and mysterious. It’s a fine line, I guess.
I disagree. He’s genuine, charismatic. Manganiello is a very refreshing contrast to the often cheesy vampires.
Werewolves are always boring.
The show is tired of the same ol’ vampires. Now they’re casting gym-pires. I bet this actor’s abdominal muscles signed a separate contract.
Lafayette needs to go. He was killed off in Book 2 in the written series, so his existance just makes no sense at all. Tara’s role has to be drastically reduced to match the books too.
Those seem like minor things, but for it to work like Book 4 (which is one of the best in the series) some cast members have to go away.
Lafayette is one of the best characters on the show! Excellent actor, steals every scene he’s in. Great adaptation means staying true to the spirit of the original material, not to the letter. This season rocks.
Ditto. Lafayette is one of the only reasons I still watch, he’s incredibly entertaining. One of the better actors on the show, in my opinion.
Yes please kill of Tara, NOT Lafayette
Love Lafayette & that Jason Stackhouse!!! Best characters in the show. Tara is so obnoxious and poorly acted, if they don’t get rid of her, I’m not sure if I can continue watching next season. I fast-forward every time she’s on camera.
Yes!!!!I agree. Why oh why have Lafayette and Tara hung around? For gods sake. And now Lafayette is a witch. ARRRRRHHH! I’m only watching because of book four. If they screw up and don’t do the eric/sookie thing like in the book, I say we find the studio, and take some pitch forks and torches with us.
His torso area looks gross, although his skin and arms look great. Somebody went a little overboard with the photoshopping.
Joe has shown a big, fit body on the show, but it doesn’t look like this. I call shenanigans on this magazine.
Happy he’ll be a regular, and I hope he gets a better story.
Not liking Alcide at the moment way too weak and boring but maybe that is what they are going for. He has been a big disappointment seems to have been hired for his body and not much else.
Have to agree Joe Manganiello’s character is a little weak. I have seen him on other endeavors and he’s pretty good. But oh baby, that body….true that isn’t enough, we want the whole magilla, but give the writer’s time and give the actor some time to fall in step. Love Lafayette too, have seen this actor in other endeavors – excellent…a natural…again thought the language is pretty f’ing bad – wish they’d tone that down a little at least for the regular characters.
Well, if they kill off anyone it should be Tara. She started out as one of thw stronger characters, but in Season 2 became a mess. I did not like Lafayette initially, but he has grown on me and has become more layered. Jason is another character that can probably go. Sure he lightens things up with humor, but it seems like Alan Ball is obsessed with the actor playing him, that he is inserted into a lot of episodes with nothing to do but escalate is stupidity. Jessica and Hoyt can not go anywhere. I like them both and their story. I don’t see how “several” cast members will be killed since a lot of them are very likable. It’s going to be tough.
He’s kind of freaky looking. Is he on juice, or something? I hope he uses the money to take some acting lessons.
Of course he’s on the juice. Do you honestly think he could piss clean?
no, he is not. he is on a pure protein diet. he is also 6’5″ tall. don’t be a hater…just hit the gym and you’ll be yummy too!
I agree with your opinions of Tara. I am not sure if the writing or acting or both are at fault, but I am so tired of her eye-rolling and hysterics. I am getting a kick out of Franklin Mott, but wish he would gag her next time he ties her up!
Franklin is worth making the lead of the show. The guest casting is lightyears ahead of the series regular casting, with the exception of Eric played by the Skarsgaard kid.
totally agree. Jason is starting to annoy me as well… and then, of course, there is Tara, who is my excuse to go finish my taxes, wax my eyebrows, or something else less painful than watching her acting.
couldn’t agree more. Jason is annoying me as well… and of course, there is Tara, whose presence I use as an excuse to finish my taxes, wax my eyebrows, or something else less painful than watching her acting.
I also hope Talbot doesn’t get killed off. He is such a riot!
It’s the butterscotch stallion with a great body and a mustache! Seriously though, he really should switch from a personal trainer to an acting coach.
Joe is a great guy! Im so happy for him
I think you are all being too hard on Tara. Knowing the producers and the direction of the show, Tara will continue to evolve. There are so few actresses that can do the emotional work of Tara. I hope the producers will show a more comical fun side of her like Sookie has seen this year.
I agree that Tara is the weakest actor of the main characters. It’s called INDICATING, right? That bad acting habit she has of faking and pushing everything. Also agree that Lafayette actor is terrific. He has a lot of nuance, intelligence, humor – and his scenes with Eric are a standout. The werewolf guy is hot – we haven’t seen if he can act yet. Give him a chance!
I disagree with you Lex, I agree with Peter. This season is brilliant. There’s a reason it was nominated for best drama.
It definitely deserves a best drama nomination for this season.
Now all we need is a confirmation for an episode dedicated to him naked.
I almost switched to werewolves after this character premiered.
This photo makes him look all roidy…no thanks. Much better on the show….
I love this show, watch it every Sunday with a glass of wine in my hand, talk to my friends about it on Monday morning.
Bf joins me and tolerates my oggling…and has developed a very strong desire to go back to his gym.
love it Alan Ball and thank you.
