I hear Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman who’s known as the “Coming Out Guru” is developing with JUMA Entertainment an A&E project with the working title, natch, Coming Out. The concept will feature multiple public figures coming out of the closet. Casting is still in process. Bragman has been working with celebrities coming out of the closet for two decades and recently orchestrated exposure for Meredith Baxter and country singer Chely Wright. Bragman and Baxter were part of a “Coming Out in Hollywood” panel at Outfest, the gay and lesbian film festival, this past weekend, and Bragman mentioned that if anyone knows a high-profile celebrity coming out of the closet he has a great TV opportunity.

Who’d care?
People want to watch celebrity trainwrecks, or fake celebrities who are trainwrecks. Examples being the Jersey Shore folks. Unless they’re weird and ridiculous and people can laugh at their lives, who’d watch?
Who’d actually care if they’re gay or not?
If anyone’s interested in learning about the issue (namely what’s involved for someone coming out and how difficult it can me), I’d strongly recommend a documentary that was aired on PBS called “Anyone and Everyone -Parents of gays and lesbians are the focus of this documentary.”
It’s a very moving documentary. Will never forgot the rancher father who had always joked, teased and made fun of gays when raising his boy. A real guy’s guy. While driving with his wife one day, she told him the son was gay. He’s described the sinking feeling he had about what he had said and done in the past and immediately raced the truck to nearest payphone to call him, apologize and tell him he loves him.
Unfortunately, almost always painful and difficult experiences.
My experience of Howard Bragman is that he is a very sharp guy who is very well spoken during interviews and public appearances. I can’t speak for the shelf life of such a concept, though I’m sure Bragman can help turn it into an engaging television program.
Gag me with a fork. You have got to be kidding. Bragman in a TV series helping celebs come out? Who cares… especially about Bragman. Much respect for those coming out but Bragman? How about a show about how Bragman apparently defends union busting. We could set it in a cage match kind of deal. Bragman on one side and some random Teamster dude on the other. I’d watch that…on cable, you know with potato chips and dip and stuff.
Interesting! Logo had a similar series recently called “Coming Out Stories.” Most of the episodes featured everyday people types, but one of them followed the mayor of West Sacramento as he prepared to come out to his constituency. Super fascinating inside track, yo! As for “who’d care,” well: a) people trying to come out, b) people who are already out and need a little reminder that we aren’t alone in the world, c) family and friends of a and b. There’s definitely a market for reality that isn’t trainwreck-based.
Is it me, or does Howard Bragman look like he could be Dr. Arnold Klein’s baby brother. Are they related?
