The main thing is to select a group that can prepare and gird the WGA for the next big strike, ’cause the next one is the big one. I don’t think anyone is satisfied with the outcome of the Verrone-led ’07-’08 pissing contest, and we need to avoid that at all cost. That means going out and STAYING OUT until this town realizes once and for all who’s most valuable – the writer. We need to steel ourselves for incredible backlash, as the strike could conceivably be record length, and I’m talking in excess of one year, maybe double. I think there’s sentiment for this if we can finally garner the respect we deserve by essentially crushing the town.
We need to elect the right people with the resolve to organize and conduct a proper strike. Sadly, that involves more than printing cute signs and coming up with clever slogans. (Although I’ll never forget the, “What do we want? Residuals! When do we want ‘em? Later!” Love it)
I don’t want to be out of work for two years, James.
Sorry
This is a joke, right?
Sounds great. Problem is, writers need to eat and pay the rent. And in this economy, with so few jobs out there, I doubt many writers have the stomach or the financial ability to endure a long protracted strike.
I’m confused, Schmuck, You say there are few jobs. Then you go on to say few writers have the financial ability to weather a long strike. If writers are not working anyway, what do they have to lose going on strike? The upside is tremendous and the downside is limited.
By holding out for as long as it takes next time WGA members will at last gain the respect and money we deserve.
James. Perhaps you get your jollies by writing this kind of incendiary drivel and then watching the swirling results. But for those of us who lost friends due to suicide because of the despair and ruin they experienced due to the last WGA strike, the pain of that experience has not yet gone away. So many lost their homes, their livelihoods and saw their families break apart. Who do you really think is going to respect writers if they hold this town hostage again? We’ve never even had time to recover from the last strike. Be smarter than that.
Everything we have as writers is due to the gumption and persistence of writers who came before us and held out for better deals. While the rhetoric in the initial post here is inflammatory, and a couple of the statements insensitive, I concur with the basic message.
I’m going to take a wild stab in the dark and guess that this first post was from a very anti-strike guy.
James, who are you voting for? I want to vote for everyone else.
Hopefully, there’ll be a new board that will get rid of the ED and his knuckleheads.
P-s-s-s-t…(James is actually an out of work actor, and the above post is an audition for a job as a freelance studio flack….y’know a Hollywood hyphenate.)
So I want to make sure I understand the First post….Strike for one maybe two years and then watch what is left in this town leave for good….Now there is a Rocket Scientist Approach! Brilliant!!!!
James, you’re a troller, right? Right?
