EXCLUSIVE: The smash hit stage musical Wicked is taking its first formative steps toward the movie screen. I’m told the musical’s producer Marc Platt, book writer Winnie Holzman, and songwriter Stephen Schwartz have begun meeting with filmmakers. Insiders confirm that JJ Abrams, James Mangold, Ryan Murphy, and Rob Marshall are among the directors who’ve met or otherwise thrown their hat in the ring. More meetings will take place when the musical’s authors come to town in the fall. The film will be made at Universal, which produced the stage musical with Platt.
After the billion dollar gross of Alice In Wonderland, studios are combing their fairy tale books for classics. It’s crowded on the Oz front –Disney attached Sam Raimi to The Great and Powerful Oz, and Warner Bros has more than one film in development. But the $2 billion in global stage grosses for Wicked put it in league with Mamma Mia!, the long-running stage musical whose movie transfer grossed over $600 million worldwide for Universal.
Wicked, a Wizard of Oz prequel, is based on the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and focuses on the early relationship between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, a green-skinned beauty before she ended up flying on a broomstick. Wicked began as a movie development project with Platt and Universal, before they changed course and took it to the stage first. It was an immediate sensation, quickly recouping its $14 million capitalization in 2004 and becoming one of the biggest grossing tuners of all time, with the Broadway show and eight touring companies. The Broadway musical routinely tops the weekly gross charts–$1.4 million per week is average, but the musical has broken the $2 million mark more than once. The musical shows no signs of winding down, the reason its architects haven’t been in a rush to mount a movie — until now.
As for the directors on the list, Abrams is an intriguing choice despite never having done a musical (he’s composed themes for several of his series’ creations). Knight and Day director Mangold is also a musical newcomer, though he directed the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. Murphy has put himself on the musical map with Glee, on which he’s not only exec producer but executive music producer. Marshall has the lengthiest musical resume having directed and choreographed Annie and the Oscar-winning Chicago. But he is coming off the misfire Nine, a film that had Platt among its producers.
The movie can’t come soon enough for Universal, which has several musicals in the works. The studio is trying to mount a Mamma Mia! sequel, is eye-ing a new version of Billy Elliot based on the successful stage musical (Universal is one of its producers). The studio is also working on a movie transfer of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, recently hiring Kenny Ortega aboard as director and choreographer. Ortega directed the High School Musical trilogy and the Michael Jackson docu This Is It.

Glee’s Lea Michelle would be great for Elphaba and perfectly timed..
are you kidding?! i really hope so! wow!
yes she would!!!!
i hope not…
There is only one cast that show be considered
Idina Menzel -Elphie
Kristen Chenwenth – GaLinda
James Marsden or Norbert Leo Butts for Fiero
Nathan Lane – Wizard
Megan Mullaly – Madam
Director: Rob Marshall or director who directed film version of Dreamgirls. Each of these gentlemen know what to do and how to adapt a broadway show to the big screen. What you see on the BROADWAY STAGE should be represented on film. If not, they should film the Broadway shows and release them if and when the shows close.
She can be a young elphie!
I think the originals had their time, bravo! but I have seen many shows of wicked and have seen wonderful talent portraying the parts, why does it always have to be an actress or actor they always want so much money to play the parts and the costs get bounced back to the consumers, think about it, I recently saw a show and the two girls that played elphaba and glenda were extrodinary why cant we give them their chance at stardom insted of people who are already there. I was frustrated when they were making the movie for Phantom of the Opera, and they didnt cast michael crawford(the original) as the phantom, but to say the least, I loved the movie(didnt even know gerard butler could sing) but to say the least it made loads of money and didnt have original cast. stop and think outside the box people.
I agree with your choice of having Kristen and Idina to star in the movie if it ever comes out
I agree completely with you! I think that all of them would great for those roles.
The OBC would be amazing… but they are too old now for the role they need to play. Especially Norbert Leo Butz, he has aged.
i totally agree
Kristen and Idina already came out saying they would not be in the movie because while onstage you can’t see how old they are, you certainly can on film. Neither of these fine ladies could pass as high school students. They are great and marvelous, no doubt, but they are not as young as they used to be.
Nathan Lane as the Wizard??? Um, no. Let’s stick with Joel Grey.
I partially agree…the best Fiyero EVER is David Nathan Perlow!! He’s in the traveling show….amazing!!
THANK YOU!!!!
I totally and completely agree with this!!
No one can portray those roles as well as the originals!!
I think the project is a lost cause if the originals dont play those characters!
Idina and Kristen are the best that that ever happened to this musical! For the producers of this movie to casat someone else to play the roles they deserve is stupid!
I am aware that Idina and Kristen stepped forward and said that they feel as though they have out grown the characters. But we all know that that is SO far from the truth!
I refuse to go see this movie unless those two for sure are in the movie!!
i totally agree with ur cast they should have just filmed the original cast and put it on dvd it wouldnt be that hard they coud probably take out all the cheering
I agree one hundred percent. Lea Michelle has great voice but can’t pull off elphaba character
totally agree. the only cast that should be in the movie is the orignal cast. i mean come on who’s better then the original players???
only one person can play elphie and only one person can play galinda< these people are idina and kristen
However much I want that to happen, lets face it, they are no offense kristin and Idina, I love you and you are the best ever, but they are too old. I am in favor of Megan Hilty as G(a)linda and Eden Espinosa as Elphie, Anne Hathaway as Nessa Rose, Joel Grey as the Wizard, and Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible. But i think that Kristin and Idina should be in the cast somehow. Long live the original Glinda and Elphie!!!!!!!!!!
I think the same! No new characters . I saw the musical, it was awesome! I listen to the CD every day.
Rob Marshall cant direct this show. he was just hired on by Disney to direct the movie adaption of “Into The Woods”. and Idinia is being considered in the role of bakers wife for that movie. and Kristin Chenoweth is to old to play galinda, sadly. but Alli Mauzey would be amazing in the movie! second best galinda ever!!!!
I don’t agree it should be Rachel Tucker as Elphaba
Louise Dearman as Glinda
Lee mead as Fiero
Johnny Depp as the Wizard
And CJ Johnson from oliver as Madame Morrible
I agree with Nathan Lane but idina and kristen are too old now. especially kristen (although i dearly love her). However i do believe that they should take the cast from the people playing it on broadway or the tours. If they’re good enough for those shows then they are good enough for the big screen. Its just the ORIGINAL cast is a little old now. Especially to be playing college kids for half of the movie
YES!!!
Ditto- we already saw the chemistry between chenoweth and menzel on stage- just watch any you tube clips of their Broadway run together for verification- and the other casting is perfect as well. and makeup does wonders to hide aging.
Kristen & Idina should definitely be incorporated somehow, if not in their original roles should they be willing. And there is ALWAYS something to be said for Hollywood magic!
I missed seeing Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth. But I often listen to the CD version. It’s a musical and should be about the music first.
Jemma Rix as Elphie and Suzie Mathers as Glinda for me.
Agreed!!! definitely need the original broadway cast for the movie!!! Especially Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenweth, and Norbert Leo Butt!!!!
I agree that Lea Michelle might be the obvious choice because of the link to Idina. However, I think that Emmy Rossum (Phantom) is a far better actress and singer.
Emmy Rossum? I agree she is a good actress and singer, but to play Elphaba? I don’t think she could pull it off. Setting aside the fact that she completely bombed in the Phantom of the Opera movie (seeing as how there had to be sooo many key changes because she couldn’t hit the original notes), but her voice has too much of a soft quality to it to play either Elphaba or Glinda, both extremely strong and loud vocally. She would not be able to sing those roles with the power behind her voice that is needed to honestly give life to these characters. She is a wonderful singer, don’t get me wrong, but in my opinion she should not have been selected for Phantom, and she is not right for the main characters in Wicked. I’m not a huge fan of Lea Michelle, but I think she would do a better job than Emmy.
Though Emmy Rossum is an amazing singer / actress / performer. She’s too… Beautiful, sweet, and innocent. That’s not a bad thing, Elphaba was beautiful and all that. But every time I see Emmy, I see Christine. Or Fiona. Lea, however, can probably reach the ranges that her character needs and she has Idina’s looks.
Kristen Chenowith and Idina Mentzel as well as the orginial cast should do the movie except the goat should be a goat with the original cast member lending the voice for him. The ideal director would be Rob Marshall but Kenny Ortega or even Ryan Murphy would be a good choice. Universal needs to fast track this into production now it’s been too long in the waiting to not come to theaters. Spend the money Universal and pull out all the stops to make it like Wizard of Oz was a unforgetable movie that will last for generations.
I completely agree. The OBC started Wicked and they should be given the opportunity to return. I love the OBC, more so than the other versions I’ve heard. To see them on the big screen would be AMAZING!
Along with Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, it is rumored that Jenna Leigh Green is going to play Nessarose. She was Nessarose in the Los Angeles production of Wicked.
Jenna Leigh Green also played Nessa in NYC. I saw her awhile ago in it.
I think Eden Espinosa would be spectacular in the movie. I guess I’m biased though since I saw her and she is my favorite. There is honestly not an Elphaba I don’t like, and the only Glinda I don’t like is Kate Reinders. She was obnoxious.
I also love the original cast. It would be hard, though to put Idina and Kristen back in school-aged roles. No doubt they may be the most talented people to play those roles, BUT the age gap is a real question.
I could see them having both as young and older version of each character… Lea Michelle/Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Belle/Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda… The story would lend itself to expanding the timeline out…
A little CGI goes a long way, they could be made to look younger easily.
but if you think about it, they had to do it for the play, im sure they can do it for a movie…
I totally agree w/ U… It will be difficult to get them together. I also LOVE the OBC, but honestly believe a fresh re-cast is the best idea. One reason is that this generation is not too familiar with Idina or Kristin and the second reason is that the studio needs familiar faces to sell the film & attract movie goers. Therefore I also agree with Kenny that both Lea Michell & Idina Menzel and Kristin Belle & Chenoweth would work perfectly.
Age was one of the major complaints about the OBC when Rent became a movie. The ratings for Rent weren’t as good as I would rate it, because they had 30-year-olds playing 19-24 year olds. (Well, I’m guessing the approximate ages.)
But still, I think that Idina and Kristen should be Elphie and Glinda. That would be AMAZING!
I wish I was older so I could audition! =(
i am so sick of everbody slamming idina and kristin because of age. Kristin is hardly 30 and idina is around there too, so get over yourselves!!! we all know they could pull it off, i mean, in glee idina looked old, and kristin looked 40, but in real life, they both look like collage students. god!
Kristin and Idina hardly 30??? In what world? Kristin is 43 and Idina is pushing 40 if not there already….
It would be hard for the OBC to play the charatoers the whole movie for example i love rent but werent they supposed to be in their early 20′s but using the OBC made them look so much older. I love kristen and idina but they look their age how could someone believebly see kristen and idina as highschool.college students then as grown women. I could see them playing the older witches but in a span of 2 years between acts they still wouldnt change that much. Age on stage is more believable than age on film. All be it they would be my top choices but it potentially be movie suicide.
I know that all Wicked lovers would definitely watch the movie if the OBC was played. It isn’t their age that we all care about it really is there performance and THEY KNOW THEIR CHARACTERS! I didn’t mind Rent having their OBC and having them look old. Honestly the only thing I cared for on Rent was their musicals and dancing. I loved watching it and I will DEFINITELY enjoy seeing Idina play her role in Wicked. It is much needed, she made the character what it is.
Two Words: Tim Burton. Take the visual and run with it!
Noooooooooo, Tim Burton ruined Sweeney Todd! Please, someone direct Wicked before Tim Burton ruins it too!!!
-Wicked fan before it actually was popular.
i have to agree i like tim burton but hes more for cartoons and claymation, i think some one else would be better suited
Hallaluyer! Bought the book back in 2001! I think they should do an adaptation of the book, not the musical.
I agree…I like some of Tim Burton’s stuff but NOT for Wicked. He’ll ruin it I think.
Are you crazy?? Sweeney Todd by Tim Burton was AMAZING!! It was a masterpiece!
I agree. As much as I love Tim Burton, he’s just not the right choice for this movie.
NO TIM BURTON. He’d destroy it, and I don’t see Johnny Depp as Fieyro (but Helena Bohnam Carter could probably pull off a good Madame Morrible . . .) Tim Burton has his wonderful qualities, yes; he definitely has a niche; but NOT WICKED! I was absolutely enamored by, and completely adore the stage play; not so much the book – Elphaba had NO real redeeming qualities in the book, and so little character, you might as well get Kristen Stewart to play her if you were basing it on the book. They can’t do the book, and they can’t ruin the play. Make it into a movie, yes, absolutely, and please, SOON! But they’ve got to cast it right, they have to direct it right, and they can’t disappoint the fans of the PLAY, which is what has brought the story so much, well, popularity.
Tim burton was obvious. i mean, this calls for something awesome, if they want lea michele for elphie. no offense, i love lea but please.
Totally agree!
they are doing a book adaptation in the form of a mini series on abc soon
really? no way! whats it called?
I agree completely. To do it any other way would be a waste of time and money. They need Idina and Kristen, they are the best and what the fans deserve.
Why is everyone missing this????
Christina Aguilera should be cast as Elphaba!
AND….Britney Spears should be cast as Glinda.
Both would have HUGE box office draw and the parallels between the characters and the actresses lives would be scandalous!
Think about it.
No. That would ruin it. Keep the original cast. Only change Adam Lambert. That would get the younger audience and keep close to original cast. Don’t forget Joel Grey
ADAM LAMBERT should play Fiyero. He was a wonderful understudy for the part in the LA company of Wicked…Check out his performance on You Tube…especially “As Long As You’re Mine!”
Britney?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! are you frickin kidding me??? heres what Donnie is trying to say:
Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel! Geez people!
Absolutely agree on Adam Lambert as Fiyero. He did an amazing job from what I’ve seen of it and it would definitely bring in a younger audience. As for Kristin and Idina, well, makeup and computers can do wonders if there is a problem with age, right? What they pay to make them look younger (if it’s even really necessary), they’ll save on not having to get someone to overdub voices. Because both of them have WONDERFUL voices that are perfect for these songs.
That is the worst idea I’ve ever. That would create appeal it would make no one see it ever.
Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears would be terrible in these roles. Neither can act very well and Briney Spears definitely could not sing the part
Are you serious? Leave Broadway movies to Broadway actors. Get your crap outta here. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoworth are the ones that are deserving of the rolls and they are most likely to get the rolls. End. Of. Story.
Gotta agree with you there, Joshua. I’ve tried casting the movie in my head, and can’t come up with ANYONE else to really play Glinda and Elphaba. They are both so amazing.
Finally!!! Someone that understands! Thank you! Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth!!!!!!!!!!!
i REALLY hope you’re trolling.
@Donnie – please tell me you’re kidding. Sadly, Idina Menzel can’t handle the role vocally anymore. The best Elphie out there is named
Dee Roscoli: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdNydZ6P0CY
She is absolutely a-friggin-mazing!
i thimk its Eden Espinosa, she adds power into the music and acting.
Saw Dee Roscoli in Wicked in Honolulu this afternoon. She was AMAZING! The program also said she has now played the part more than any other on tour so I agree with casting Dee. Also, Adam Lambert would be terrific as well.
NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! NEVER!!!!!!! EVER!!!! BRITNEY????? WHAT???? THAT IS TOTAL BS
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn’t go see it with either one of them in it. That’s an insult to both Ephaba and Galinda!!!
I agree fully with you. However the aniamtions shouldnt be fake as most films are now a days. I think the goat should be shown like the Wizard of Oz’s animal, the lion.
I think it would be great to have Kristin and Idina, but Elphaba and Glinda are supposed to be more college age.
I remember watching the Wizard of Oz and the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda both looked like Grandmas more than college students
That’s because those stories take place later in life when they are older. The musical makes it look like the story takes place in a short period of time but if you read the book you would realize that the story expands over decades.
I say use Lea and Kristen Bell as the young versions of Elphaba and Galinda, then Idina and Kristen as the adults… best of both worlds… and PLEASE GOD IN HEAVEN WILL EVERYONE STOP GIVING THAT HACK KENNY ORTEGA JOBS??? The guy is one of the biggest no-talents in the business… never came up with an original bit of choreography, but relies on the talent of his assistants he has churned through over the years… look at “Hocus Pocus” to see how he can ruin a film…
i totally agree i like lea but she should stick to glee i would prefer it if the original cast were in it.
but unfortunately I’m pretty sure Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel hate each other.
Since when have they hated each other. Last time I heard they were singing together
Idina and kristin are bffs. watch any interview with the 2 of them together, they love each other. Lea would be great for elphie at shiz, and idina and her look so alike it would be awesome. but no one is as short as cheno. it would be weird if her in collage was taller than her as an adult.
I so Agree the ony choice is Idina Menzel and Krisen Chenoweth for the two witches. Lea Michelle would be a last resort Elphaba for me as I would be dead set on having Idina do the role. She is perfect and Kristen has that comedic streak that makes you not hate Glinda as much.
Lea Michelle is a TERRIBLE idea. She is aweful!
Steve, you have absolutely no musicality. As a vocalist myself, I can say with technical surety that Lea would blow Idina away. Idina is good, but there hasn’t been a voice on Broadway with the power and depth like Lea’s since Barbara Streisand.
ccs, I have no clue where you’ve gotten your training. No need for such arrogance. I agree that Idina is not the greatest, but Lea is heavily overrated as a vocalist. Lea is not anywhere near the league of Barbara, and is much more comparable to Idina. There is no exceptional depth to her voice. She makes everything intense and takes enormous breaths. She is a charismatic belt, not to be mistaken for the depth anywhere near that of Barbara Streisand. For the record, Steve’s comment was idiotic. Lea is nothing near awful. He probably meant annoying
Idina Menzel is AMAZING!!!! How could you think for a second that she’s not! I think Idina and Kristin Chenoweth should play Elphie/Elphaba and Galinda/Glinda! Also, they aren’t too old, it’s not like they’re 100!
I agree…
Lea is a great choice due to her scary physical resemblance to Idina and the fact that she CAN sing very well.
Fresh faces/vocals are needed to better market this production…
I agree with you 100%. Lea is soo annoying and shouldn’t be compared to Barbra! She’s trying to copy her but will never succeed. She’s talented but not a nice person and the only reason people are comparing her to Idina is because they look similar.
First of all Idina is 500x better than Lea will ever be even though I love her with all my heart (I am not happy with the 12 tattoos she has though) and I totally agree with #1 Wicked fan!!! I think Idina and Kristin should get there original parts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!
Lea is the absolute perfect Elphie!
I don’t know who the rest of you are listening to – Lea has one of the most perfect voices I have ever heard and I studied music in college, with a major in voice.
She is a pro and has absolute control over her voice. She has depth and a beautiful tone. She also knows how to control the volume – knows when to soften and when to belt.
I think she is one in a million to come along and I would love to see her in this role.
Lea Michele is amazing, but she doesn’t have the right attitude, or presence to play Elphaba. She just isn’t Elphaba.
It is possible to make actors look younger, with all the Hollywood specialists around nowadays. Idina and Kristin would be my first choice.
I think Lea would be a GREAT Elphaba!! Her voice is amazing, and she reminds me so much of Indina. Remember, they DID play mother and daughter in GLEE…
It does not matter who has the best voice in the film version. It has to be the originals or it will not be what it could be
U SUCK I LUV IDENA SHE IS PERFECT
I agree. Idina is the best!
u cant even spell IDINA…. Lea Michelle is amazingly talented and like all broadway actresses, she can adapt to any role. Idina Menzel is amazing but if they need a new actress for the role Lea would be perefect.
You are wrong, Steve is right. Lea has an amazing voice, but it’s too innocent to play a powerful role as such. Her voice is still childish in a way that works for glee. not wicked.
I admit Lea Michele is a very good singer, but her acting is very much stage-oriented, and I feel she overacts for screen. She’s got longevity, but for stage, not screen. Also, Stephanie J Block, who originated Elphaba in the early workshops, would be fantastic (I saw her play the role on Broadway), though I don’t know how she would be for the screen. I really think they need seasoned Broadway performers to play these roles.
The only reason she overacts for the screen is because thats the character she plays.
I agree that Lea is good, but not nearly as good as Idina!!!
That statement is absolutely correct. Some may not like Lea, (though I can’t imagine why) but if you don’t hear how fantastic her voice is, you are tone deaf. That said, I just saw Jackie Burns playing this role on Broadway, and I’ve heard nearly nearly every other good Elphaba, including Dee Roscioli, Teal Wicks, Eden Espinosa, and Donna Vivino. Jackie Burns is by far the best, both voice and acting, and she would be my vote for the movie. Idina is too old, and Lea is probably too SHORT for the role. She’s TINY in case you didn’t know, and Elphaba is a tall character.
THANK YOU!!! Finally someone who realizes that the cast of Glee, especially Lea Michelle, is NOT the best choice for a soon-to-be classic movie! Seriously, they need actresses with real talent –like hard-core opera singing skills for Galinda/Glinda, and someone who can actually sing and has a wide vocal range for Elphaba. So definitely Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, or at least Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty if people are arguing that Kristin and Idina are too old for the part (though thats not true!) And Wicked is most definitely NOT a Tim Burton type of movie! If he directs it I’m suing someone… not sure who. Haha
I absolutely agree with you!! Also, if anyone’s seen Willemijn Verkaik (Oberhausen cast), she’s GREAT!!!!! I beleive she speaks English- she at least sings it- and….. well, just look her up. Eden and Megan might be good… but Natalie Daraadich also has the range and comedy that’s needed for Glinda. And I apologize for rambling on– but no Glee and absolutely OBC,but don’t forget that there are many wonderful people who can play the roles.
I agree and disagree. Lea Michele has an AMAZING voice, don’t get me wrong. I’m a Gleek till the end. But Idina & Kristin & the original cast should do this movie because they were the originals and it should just stay that way. I can NOT picture Wicked without Idina & Kristin.
Absolutely believe that Idina and Kristin should reprise their roles in the movie version. Barbra Streisand went from adolescent to middle-aged woman in a number of movies, why can’t they age gracefully? Idina Menzel in person (in concert) and Kristin Chenowith (on Glee) have the chops to give Wicked the absolute magic that it deserves. I have seen three different casts so far, and I still think the CD stands alone in its own celebrity. Barbra Streisand was also not so well known outside of Broadway in her early career. Lea Michelle is too soft to play Elphie, and would also make her melodramatic rather than the sharp edged disappointed green girl that she is. P.S. I’m 60 years old, so that’s my age bias!!
I agree. Lea Michele is horrible live. Highly overrated.
I think Eden Espinosa should play Elphaba. She’s beautiful, and she has an amazing vocal range.
Other than that, keep all the OBC.
Sorry, I love Idina, but she’s not good live.
Why would it matter if Idina’s good live or not? It’s a MOVIE. They’ll record the songs and play them over. And she’s proven her voice on a record. Deny it. She’s amazing and she’ll be brill in the movie. Kristen Chenowith too!
I think Jemma Rix is better though
I’ve just watched the Australian production of Wicked. Jemma Rix is totally awesome. Maybe the producer should consider her
I agree fully with this statment as well!
I am also a performer, and I have to say I am constantly unimpressed with Lea Michelle. She has a good voice, but it really isn’t as AMAZING as everyone makes it out to be. I think there are many people out there who could do so much better.
Lea is too young.
She really isn’t. Though she wouldn’t be my first choice, Elphaba is a college aged girl and Lea Michelle is around 22, which is college aged.
get indian mezel to do it get the orginal cast to try and do like there tryed with rent it would be amazing
The Chris Columbus film version of rent was a total mess… As much as I loved the original cast being back (with the exception of Mimi), the films directions was terrible and the actors did not look age appropriate. The direct to DVD “Rent: Live on Broadway” was far superior to that atrocious film.
u can be found anywhere lol
Lea Michele is a great choice IF Idina is not available
i would like to try and appease everyone with my theory. i think that lea michele should play elphaba as a teen and then have idina menzel play her as an adult. same with g(a)linda. i think that emmy rossum from the phantom of the opera movie should play her as a teen and then bring in kristin chenowith. rossum has a fantastic soprano and is young enough to pull it off. i also think that fiyero should be played by zac efron as a teen (i’ll explain in a second), and matthew morrison as an adult. those of you who scoff zac should realize that he has matured into more serious roles and can actually sing. he is actually becoming a should-be respected actor. Johnny Depp, arguably the best movie actor out there today, started out as what efron is right now… a teenage heartthrob. now look at him! last but not least, i think that julie andrews should play madame morrible. morrible sings, but not too much, and andrews has that quality that would make her PERFECT for the role. just my ideas….
I agree- you read my mind about young and mature characters playing the parts, it opens up the audience, and on the heels of Glee’s success this ROCKS.
Too many big names and the movie suddenly becomes more about the “rockstar” cast than about the music and the storyline. The originals should absolutely be the first choice.
I am sorry who is suggesting rock stars… Lea Michelle is a broadway star… She is much better live than what people realize. On Glee they make her sing with as little vibrato as possible because they don’t want the show to sound like “showtunes” (which irks the hell out of me… I hate that they constantly insult broadway on that show). As long as they don’t cast any of the males on that show (with the obvious exception of Mr. Shuester who originated the role of Fearow(sp?)/The Scarecrow on Broadway.
Anyway, I don’t have a problem with big names as long as they can legitimately sing (in a traditional broadway style and without computer assistance). Kristen Belle could play a young Glinda so easily to Kristen Chenoweth’s adult Glinda… And really who else could play a young Idina Menzel than Lea Michelle? She looks and sounds soooo similar, just younger.
The guy who plays Kurt can sing as well… forgot about him for a minute
Matt Morrison (Mr. Schuester) on Glee did NOT originate the role of Fiyero in WICKED. He originated the role of Link Larkin on Broadway in Hairspray. Norman Leo Butts was the original Fiyero.
except Lae Michelle is a soprano, not an alto. Idina Menzel to my understanding is an alto. No other person could sing those songs with the feeling they need other than Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth! Absolutly love them both!
I love the idea of Julie Andrews playing Madam Morrible. I think they should at least have someone who played it onstage play the other parts.
You’re absolutely right! Julie Andrews would make a wonderful Madame Morrible! Though some of the higher notes in Thank Goodness might be quite a strain on her voice… But a great idea!!!
Just throwing this out there that Julie Andrews can’t sing like she used to anymore. She had some sort of surgery where they messed up her throat making it very difficult and sometimes impossible to sing anymore
The only problem with that theory is that Cheno is sort of puny…and Emmy Rossum might be half a foot taller than her
I disagree, sorry… I just don’t think that there should be two different people playing the same role… The characters don’t mature THAT much during the story.
lea would be fab as elphie and i totally agree with julie andrews, but zac efron does not seem like a good fiyero type. neither does johnny depp, so that was a bad comparison
Ok people let us think and ponder about this. Should we have the originals whom revolutionized the whole two parts and that the actresses on stage currently still copy there manareisms are TRAINED to sing and sound like them and basically made this a WORLD WIDE Sencation or some young actresses that will sing well and do at best an ok job? If you picked the Originals Ding Ding Ding you are a winner. I have seen Wicked 3 times, each time more amazing! I have watched a Tony nominated Madam Morrible, a Wizard who was once a star on some tv show in the 70s and an Elphaba who has her own fan site, and who got an ovation for her evil cackle each time she did it.
Im not saying that if they cast Lea Michele that she would do bad; no I think she would be perfect for a FLASHBACK sequence to Elphabas past. But I firmly believe if they want to do this movie the RIGHT WAY the the Originals and the Originals only should be casted. If they dont do all of them at least Kristin Chennoweth and Indina Menzel should take the leads! Anyone else is unacceptable!
AND THEY ARE NOT TO OLD!!!!!!!
I think we should not take advice from somebody who thinks the past tense of cast is casted.
Let’s be serious. Idina and Kristin were both too old to realistically play the roles on film back in ’04 when this show first opened. It’s fine on stage, because you really need to cast older on stage because most twenty-year olds don’t have the vocal maturity or stamina to play roles like Glinda or Elphaba eight nights a week for a year. Casting two women both into their thirties was a good idea. However, having two 40-year-old women playing teenagers in a movie is not a good idea. Didn’t work for RENT, will not work for Wicked. I don’t think Lea Michele is a good choice for Elphaba because a role like Elphaba is not Lea’s type. Let’s look at her most recent roles… not very Elphaba-y. I think she looks the right age for it, though.
And Emmy Rossum? Come on… seriously?
Oh god… someone suggested Emmy Rossum?! no, no, no… I could see Kristen Bell or Amy Adams in that role… Kristen Bell could pull of being a young version of Kristin Chenoweth I think if they did a older and younger version of each character. Lea looks a young Idina… and you have to admit their voices are somewhat similar. I like Idina’s voice better obviously, but I think our opinions of Lea are a little tainted by the way they make her sing on Glee (the make her sing straight tone all they time so they aren’t too “showtuney”… I HATE THAT!!! Not a fan of Glee because of it… I like a well trained voice, not the computerized/fake High School Musical sound.)
I couldn’t agree more with your comment! I really loved how the Rent movie was carried out…it stayed pretty true to the musical and had as many original cast members as possible (and the others were carefully selected) Original cast or someone who has done the role before (Such as Eden, Stephanie, or Shoshana
I think Lea Michelle could take Idinas place. although it would be great if Idina & Kristin could play the leads.
they should do a filmed live on broadway like they did rent. that way nothing is lost and producers and directors dont butcher it. leave well enough alone
Perfect timing!!??!! She is great Ill grant you she makes Glee, Glee. But as I said before she would be perfect for flashbacks and Idina and Kristin should both play the parts they MADE!!! People are trained to act like them they are perfect for the parts on this I will not yeild an inch.
YES. TRUE. IDINA AND KRISTIN ARE THE PERFECT ONES BECAUSE THEY CREATED THE CHARACTERS.
Idina IS Elphaba. And Kristin IS Glinda. There is no doubt about it.
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!! But you ALSO have to remember that Indina and Kristen are getting oldish, and Lea would be a perfect Elphaba… Her and Indina have a very similar singing voice
Flashbacks would KILL the show! The whole story is how they became the two great witches and how they became two great friends! You can’t do flashbacks with a musical like that!
She may be “wonderful” to you but to a lot of people she fails miserably.I am one of them. I personally sing and she hits notes in sharp noises, it hurts my ears when she sings. Her voice would be too modern for Elphaba whose character is rather trying to make things alright than to comprehend her sexual impulses as most of Michele’s characters seem to do ((well Spring Awakening and Glee demonstrate this)). Idina Menzel would work well or even someone a bit different.
Totally agreed!
I disagree. If anyone should be Elphaba, it should be Idina Menzel. She originated the character.
I really think that Idina and Kristin should play Elphaba and Glinda. I don’t think that Lea Michelle is fit for the part.
I CAN’T WAIT! I think they should break up the actresses though i think they should show Elphiba as a teen with someone like Lia Michele but I wouldn’t want to see her as Elphiba the whole time she looks to young for the part and couldn’t pull off the adult Elphiba like Idina could. Which could artistically be done many ways even if its some kind of face and voice meld something in a song. I feel the same way about Ga-linda and its not that Idina and Kristen my two favorite versions of the for mentioned characters couldn’t play they the younger versions of the parts they originated. I just think it mite add a level of depth that can’t be captured on stage. If say Elphiba rode off on a broom during defying gravity and her face matured and then the next time you saw Galinda she had also matured. Just my take on the whole thing. If nothing else I feel like Kristen and Idina should be in it.
No! Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel have to play elphie and g(a)linda! Their famous too so people will recognize them
I agree completely! Her facial features match the character swimmingly! It would be a wonderful and believable treat to the audience!
I disagree, why do we always have to have prople that already are making big money, and making the cost to us to watch them. I think Jackie Burns and chandra lee schwartz should be considered as they are really talented women, as for the two glee ladies I watched ida on u-tube and I didnt like the way she did defying gravity, her high note was a tad sour. we have to give other people a chance at getting to the top!!!!
oh god please no that would be awful! i don’t think i could bare to see it if she played elphaba, she can’t act. that would completely ruin it for me. oh god i honestly can’t think of anything worse :’(
but then again, not many of them in glee can actually act. they’d be better getting someone a little older, who maybe has been in the stageshow too.
idina menzel perhaps? pahaha.
I HOPE SOOO!!!! Please come quick. Love it!
To everybody who thinks that Lea Michelle would make a good Elphaba:
No. Nothing against Lea Michelle’s voice (although it’s not my cup of tea)… I have heard her version of Defying Gravity and I’ve seen other things she’s done, and I don’t think she’s up to such an emotional character as Elphaba. Sure, she’s an alright singer… but Elphaba’s songs are much too BIG and EMOTIONAL, and I don’t think Lea Michelle could pull it off. Her voice is too small and cutesy for a character like Elphaba, who belts.
Lea is possibly one of the most grating, annoying personalities on the scene today. She’d turn off as many from seeing the show as she’d turn on.
If anyone from Glee was cast in the movie I would loose all respect for one of the most creative, well-written and executed plays ever created.
NO, If anyone from “Glee” got casted as a lead in “Wicked” it would be an insult to the show and would downright suck. I would rather see an original cast in the show. Like Idena Menzel and Christian Chenoweth.
oh no, it has to be Idina Menzel and Kristian Chenoweth
I agree some young actresses like Lea Michelle would make a great Elphaba…and Reese Witherspoon would make an awesome Glinda! BUT, I listen to the original cast recording over and over and nobody can give the music that emotional kick it deserves like Kristin and Idina!!! They are both broadway divas and it’s about time their infectious personalities be put on the big screen and given the credit they are due.
she better not be
NOT it would be awesome if it was the Original Broadway Cast
NO!!!!!!! EWWWWWW
Ew. No.
no no she would not
I hope not. If anyone should be in the movie it should be the OBC
yes, lea would bring in box office from glee and spring awaking fans, and she’d be great, but there is no glinda who could match her awesomeness, meanwhile kristin and idina… oh they are the perfect elphie and galinda.
or maybe meghn hilty and edin espisona
I think they should bring Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel back. All the other actors are great, but there is nothing like the originals.
NO she would NOT!!! Idina MEnzel is and always will be the best actress for the role of elphaba.
No idina all the way
There is only one Elphie and that is Idina Menzel no one else!!!!Galinda can be no one other than Kristin Chenoweth
Eden Espinosa should play the part, she was an amazing Elphaba.Lea Michelle is great in glee but Wicked is such and wonderful musical that the movie should be played by someone with more expirience.
Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty should play the part, personally their my favorite. Kristen and Indina were spectacular, but that was years ago and other wonderful actresses have played the part. Not that Im completely aginst them but,Someone a little newer should have the chance to play the part. And Lea Michelle is fine on glee, but I dont think she would be good for the role of Elphaba. Shes not expirienced enogh, shes more of a teen show star. With a movie musical as brillent as Wicked the lead charecter should be chosen very pricicly to get the perfect person.
Lea Michele? No way. Too much of a diva. And way too much fake crying. She overacts in glee and makes her role in the show the least entertaining… How about they try findind some fresh new talent? Someone who isn’t a star? Somebody who deserves this more than people who are already in the industry? How about we try some fairness for once?
This would be great if Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith reprized their roles. I hope they also try to incorporate some other aspects of the book in the movie, such as Dillamond’s death or Liir.
I disagree with you…, I hope she isn’t cast as Elphaba… not because she isn’t a brilliant actress or anything, but it’s predictable… she’d be good, but I don’t think I’d be a satisfied director… I don’t mean for my opinion to be offensive in anyway, really. But when I think of her, I can only picture Glee… and I really don’t want Wicked to be like glee. Wicked was my very first musical, that I’ve ever watched and it was and still is what I idolize. I basically breath Wicked ha.. So, please don’t take this the wrong way, it’s just my subjective opinion.
Lea Michelle sang defying gravity on glee and when she did, I was in tears because of how beautifully she sang it. I 100 percent agree with her being the perfect choice.
I finally saw this show a few months ago and was blown away. I can’t wait to see who they cast.
You know what, Kristina? You have exactly the right attitude about all of this. Everyone should just be patient and stop bickering about who we think should be cast in the movie. We really cannot influence the directors’ choices of actors and actresses, it’s really not our decision about who should play the parts of Elphaba and G(a)linda. We should just be excited that they are even making a movie and not complain that we aren’t getting our favorite actors and actresses. That’s my opinion.
Alex, I have to agree with you more than any other post. It is the most practical and logical. As a long time performer, director, producer and filmaker, I understand that it is not OUR decision who will be in the film. It is the director and producers and powers that be. ie-money men. They will pick the cast who will do the film the most justice and bring in the biggest box office draw and returns. Of course I have my personal favorites of who I would love to see portray the characters on screen, but no amount of campaining or begging will influence the director’s choice in casting. It is all about his vision. The studios are in the business to make money so they will pick the cast that will bring in the most. This film has the potential to be one of the biggest movie musicals of all time and they will realize that and not just cast willy-nilly.
Naturally people will speculate and dream about this cast. I know I do, and let’s pray TPTB make decisions to make this an epic movie!!!!
Emmy Rossum????? Really????
More rehashing of the same stuff. Yuck.
Re casting, how about doing something REALLY revolutionary and cast the original stars, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel? They were, and are, perfection.
Totally agree!!
Third that – they should not even consider anyone else. If Murphy directs, should be a shoo-in since they were both had recurring roles on Glee last season.
Lea Michelle could be Idina’s standby – and when she performed who would know the difference?
How is that revolutionary? They did that with Rent and it was a disaster. Actors playing characters 20 years younger than they are might work on stage, but not on film.
AMEN! RENT is my all time fav show. The movie was awful and what works on stage doesn’t always work on screen!
I agree. I attended my 10th performance of Wicked in SanFrancisco a month ago and was blown away by both standbys, Felicia Ricci and Libby Servais. They are quite believable as the roles because they are the perfect age and their honest portrayals were astounding. I wish they could be in the movie.
I couldn’t agree more!! Cast Kristin and Idina. Although I have great fears that probably won’t happen.
I agree. They’re just so good. My fear is it wont be them either
They’re both MUCH too old now to be playing college aged characters, they could just about pull it off on stage but film’s entirely different and it would never work. Besides, just because they were the originals doesn’t mean they’re the best in everyone’s eyes.
I agree. Although I love both Idina and Kristen, they are way to old to be playing college. Lea Michelle would be perfect for Elphaba and possible Bailey Hanks, the most recent Elle Woods for Galinda/Glinda.
This is film folks, quite a different medium from stage.
yeah, they aren’t the best in everyone’s eyes, just the majority.
Although It would be AMAZING to have Kristin and Idina back I have to agree in saying they are too old to play COLLEGE aged sutdents. But has anyone thought that maybe they could play the older Elphaba/Glinda? It is about a 15 year difference from Shiz to Wicked Witch of the West.. So, who knows? Maybe they could play the older versions of Elphie and Glinda??
The only problem with that is, again, how do you get that to work in a film? The characters would lose so much depth and believability if you changed the actresses to adult versions. Its not like they are little kids in the beginning of the story, they are college age people and fifteen years is not that long of a time looks-wise save for getting a little plumper perhaps. Also, if the movie is based off of the stage version, the change in time does not seem nearly as long as fifteen years.
I completely agree! There would be no one better to play the parts!!! They know the characters by heart, after all they started the roles on stage!!! Who else would be better?
They’re too old. Both women are well over 30, but they would have to play college-aged students. No amount of move make-up can make that happen. I vote Lea Michelle.
They were actually both over 30 when they did it on Broadway. But they definitely are too old; Idina is the younger of the two and will be 40 this year. By the time the movie is cast, rehearsed, and filmed, both will be in their mid-40s at best.
I wish they had gotten a chance to do a movie version several years ago; both have proven to be well-liked by the camera, and there would be less risk of the film’s budget all going to making it 3-D.
because it was SO successful in the RENT film, right?
kristen and idina are too old. idinas voice cant handle the role anymore. she could barely sing it when she was on broadway. my dream cast
Natalie Weiss- Elphaba
Helene Yorke- Glinda
Hunter Parish or Aaron Tviet- Fiyero
Faith Prince or Rosie Odonnel- Madame morrible
george Clooney- Wizard
Lea Michele- Nessa
TR Knight- Boq
Brilliant. Yes to this suggestion. I love Natalie Weiss, Helene Yorke, and Lea Michele. Perhaps switching around Natalie and Lea though.
I totally agree with you.. Lea isnt really a “take a backseat role” kind of actress…. and there is NO ONE who will do better justice to the role of Elpheba, save for it’s originator, Idina Menzel.. I do agree that the other suggestions are genious, though!!
Idina did play Lea’s mom on Glee, and the similarities in both looks and talent made it uber-believable.
Oh my goodness I LOVE TR Knight as Boq! I love Lea Michele and I am a major Gleek, but I really don’t like the idea of her playing Elphaba. I think her in the role of Nessa is a perfect compromise, that would be a great role for her. I don’t know the people you picked for Galinda and Elphaba, but I agree that it shouldn’t be Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, even though I love them both to death…;( but aaron tveit’s ADORABLE. I think Fiyero could also be played by Zac Efron. (and don’t scoff at that suggestion! His teen hearthrob quality combined with his recent maturity of acting would make him really great as Fiyero.)
Idina Menzel turns 40 this year. Kristin is already in her 40s and would be at least 45 by the time filming wrapped. It was one thing when they were in their 30s on Broadway; 40-something women trying to play late teens/early 20s on the silver screen is absolutely not do-able.
Lea as Nessa! amazing idea! her voice is so not right for elphie!
Love Hunter Parish as Fiyero, but can he sing? Also Lea Michele as Nessa. Chord Overstreet would be good for Fiyero too.
have you really seen anyone else besides these two women? if you had you would see that there is more talent out there than them two. broaden your horizon!!!!!
Get Amanda Seyfried and Anne Hathaway for the leading-duo ! Amanda Seyfried is THE PERFECT CHOICE for Glinda and while Hathaway is slightly older, under all that green make-up nobody would notice.
They are rising stars, they could definitely increase the film’s BO-potential.
A Lucy Hale (blonde wig) – Emmy Rossum pairing could be excellent, as well.
But then again, it will probably go to Lea Michele who I don’t really like, but I admit she has the voice. I just find her acting ridiculously theatrical. If she could take it down a notch or two (or five), she could be great. Her facial expressions – especially during singing – are just way too much for screen. I can understand that on the stage her expressions have to be exaggarated so people can see it even in the last row, but it’s just too much for screen (small OR big).
Dude, Rachel is a Drama Queen. IMO, Michele would be playing the character wrong if she underplayed her performance (whether scenes of dialogue or scenes of music) even one iota.
Eden Espinosa, the last Maureen in Rent on Broadway, would make a great Elphaba, of course.
— Rob
Rob is right…
I am amazed how many people don’t get Rachel Berry. Plus if you actually watch the show you will see in the quieter moment Lea is not overtly dramatic. When she has her one on one talks with people she is over the top.
IT IS THE CHARACTER. Lea has describe Rachel as living her life as if she is in front of a audience, she is 15 she think that is how a theater actor would be. Ryan Murphy directs her by giving her different levels of Rachel Berry.
I don’t understand how people don’t get that.
I get the character, I get that she is a great singer and great stage actress but IMO she is over the top when neither the scene OR her character requires it.
She is actually hilarious when she goes into Tracy Flick-mode, that’s not my problem, my problem is that she looks like her pet died almost every time she sings a solo and that’s absolutely unnecessary. But of course it is a highly arguable personal opinion.
Pretty sure she actually played Elphaba on Broadway as well…in fact, I think she is who was in the role when I saw her back in 2006. If it was her, had a great voice in the leading role and could definitely do it. I think bringing the original leads back would be the best route, they have enough recognition on their own merit and fans would come out in droves to see them back in the roles (especially everyone who never saw them on Broadway…and the Glee fans).
Lea Michele has never yet played Elphaba on stage or otherwise…
They were talking about Eden Espinosa, not Lea Michele. Eden was Idina Menzel’s standby from when the show opened until mid-2004, and then she played the role on Broadway beginning in January 2006. She has also played Elphaba in the Los Angeles and San Francisco companies of Wicked.
I think “Another Commenter” was talking about Eden Espinosa playing Elphaba, not Lea Michele, as Rob J said Eden would make a great Elphaba (above).
But she did sing Defying Gravity on Glee
did anyone even see the episode of Glee where she actually sang with Indina Menzel? The two are VERY similar in sound, just Lea’s voice is a bit higher pitched.
I agree that it doesn’t need to be Lia Michele but I don’t really care for Eden Espanoza. I’d rather someone like ummm Shoshana Bean. Though as I expressed in another post I much prefer the idea of someone younger playing the part and then transitioning to an older person.
Lea is suppose to be theatrical when playing Rachel Berry the Drama Queen. I am amazed when people don’t get that. Rachel’s quieter moments Lea is not over the top, only when she is directed that way. She even said Ryan (or Director) tells her basically what level of Rachel Berry to be for a scene.
I don’t think you could have picked a worse pairing of people. Amanda Seyfried and Anne Hathaway?
I agree. Anne Hathaway has no singing background as far as I know, and Amanda Seyfried’s singing in Mamma Mia is unbearable for me to listen to because it sounds SOO autotuned. I really don’t care who they hire, even though I do have my preferences, but I am fine as long as they hire truly talented people who can actually SING.
Anne Hathaway was the very first person I thought about for a movie version of Wicked. She is a great actress and is a trained soprano. So your thinking she has no singing background is very misinformed. Amy Adams was the other name that came to mind. She is a much better singer than Amanda Seyfried.
Dont cast anyone who hasnt done Wicked yet Cast Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty because they have been with Wicked almost from the start. Eden has been with Wicked since it started.
Eden Espinosa, Stephanie J Block,Donna Vivino-Elphaba
Megan Hilty, Kendra Kessabaum-Glinda
Carol Kane, Carol Shelly-Madame Morrable
John Rubenstine-Wizard
i like your idea to have emmy rossum (no one else has suggested her but me), but i think she should play g(a)linda. she’s a soprano, so she wouldn’t be as suited to play elphaba, who is an alto/belt
Oh my Lord, Anne Hathaway would RUIN a movie version. She is probably the most overrated actress working in film today – I have no idea why she still gets jobs. And yeah, she’s too old too!
If the film were cast today, the leads should go to Lea Michelle and Amanda Seyfried. Unfortunately, a movie version does not seem to be on the horizon yet, so I’ve no doubt when it does roll around Michelle and Seyfried will also be too old for the leads. God only knows who they’ll cast.
And please, give it up about Menzel and Chenoweth – there’s no way in hell anyone in Hollywood would cast 40-year-old women as college girls, no matter how great they are.
I’ve just seen the show in London a few weeks ago, it was great, I think the cast should be something like this :
Elphaba – Anne Hathaway / Emmy Rossum / Lea Michele
Glinda – Amanda Seyfried / Lucy Hale / Carrie Underwood
Fiyero – Zac Efron (never thought I would say this but he could nail this role)
Madame Morrible – Meryl Streep / Michelle Pfeiffer / Judy Davis
Nessarose – Emmy Rossum / Lea Michele / Lucy Hale
Oz – Hugh Laurie (he can sing, dance and a great, great actor) / Ewan McGregor / Hugh Jackman
Damn, my first picks would make a killer Box Office cast
Elphaba – Anne Hathaway (queen of young Hollywood)
Glinda – Amanda Seyfried (fastest rising star of young Hollywood)
Fiyero – Zac Efron (tween/teen girls)
Madame Morrible – Meryl Streep (older audience and anyone who would wanna see her reunite with Hathaway AND Seyfried – killer trio)
Nessarose – Emmy Rossum (she was great in Phantom)
Oz – Hugh Laurie (the huge international House-audience)
I would never watch it if Fiyero was played by Zac efron! whether he was good at it or not! he is NOT good for that part!
um excuse me? zac efron may have started out as a teenage heartthrob, but he is growing into a spectacular actor. Johnny Depp started out as one too, and look at where he is now! plus, zac can sing. but most importantly, he has grown from high school musical into deep roles, and i think that he would be the best choice. i wish i could make my point stronger, but i cant put it into words.
I just don’t know… Sure, Zac’s a rising star, but I can’t quite picture him as Fiyero… Fiyero’s supposed to be this hot, care-free guy, and I don’t think Zac could pull that off…
Shockingly… Zac Efron actually has developed his voice very nicely. I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE THINKING?!!! Believe me… I was shocked to discover that someone in those horrendous HSM movies could sing and you could never tell it by anything he does in them, but he has a legitimate trained singing voice… I am totally serious… Believe me!!! I would be just as skeptical, but I saw him sing live at a benefit concert and I would have never, ever guessed he had that kind of voice based on his performance in Hairspray or the lousy High School Musical (which they had him lip sync because the tested that girls liked guys with higher voices, but his voice is much, much better than the person who dubbed him).
Here is some proof of what I am saying… Not the best examples, but prepared to be shocked:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_Lh2fJStCE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b2J83PbBYk
Now all that said, do I think he is the best singer in the world, no. But I do appreciate the fact that he continues to take voice lessons to this day. Something which many actors who reach “celebrity” status discontinue… I saw him perform several months ago at a celebrity benefit… and I am shocked to admit, he sounded like his voice had really matured. Nice resonance and he didn’t have the uneven/wavering in his vibrato that usually indicates poor breath support or tongue tension. Do I think he should play Fiyero? No not really… Would he be terrible? No.
I agree with the basic premise though that 99.999999% of these teen disney folk’s can not sing!!! But Zac actually shocked me….
What about Boc. I suggest Anthony Callea for this role. He played it in Sydney and is perfect for the role. And he has sung for Frank Wildhorn and Stephen Schwartz when visiting New York last year.
Umm…this “killer trio” would be more of a “budget killer”. There wouldn’t be enough money left over to make the movie.
I think:
Elphaba – Felicia Ricci (San Francisco sb – amazing voice, and the right age) or Nikki Davis Jones (London sb)
Glinda – Lucy Durack (Australia – young and absolutely wonderful as Glinda)
Fiyero – Andy Karl (Broadway – perfect personality)
Morrible – Carol Kane (San Francisco Original Cast)
Boq – Zac Hanna (Current 2nd National Tour Cast)
Nessa – Elisa Colla (Australia) or Neka Zang (San Francisco u/s)
Wizard – Oh how I wish Rob Guest (Australian Wizard and Phantom of the Opera) could play this role!
That would be my cast
have you ever HEARD emmy rossum sing, without hollywood magic “creating” her voice? she could never, in her or your, wildest dreams even SOMEWHAT pull off elphaba. i get it, you loved her in phantom. how in heck does that mean she can belt her face off, or sing a number like ‘wizard and i?’ seriously?!
Never thought of Carrie Underwood as Glinda, but now that you mention it, I can really see it. She has great chops, and it would be a terrific break-out role for her to go from singing to the movies.
Didn’t Marc Platt only make it into a stage musical because he wanted to adapt the book into a film at some point? He felt he needed the hype of a successful musical to get the film made. I thought I heard an interview on NPR where he was talking about that. Can anyone else confirm that?
Idina Menzel is almost 40, Kristen Chenoweth is 42!!! These characters are in BOARDING SCHOOL… so no. Think younger!
Everybody says they are too old!! well in my opinion every body forgets that later on in the play they both are older!! The play shows how both characters grow during the play! how they age and change based on what the other character does!!! In my opinion, and I know people will still disagree, I believe they can still pull it off!!! they do that in movies a lot! If they can do it live on stage they can do it behind the camera!!!!!!
I’m with Savanna! They are not too old!!!!
I disagree with you… The characters don’t mature THAT much during the story… Barely even a few years!
Oh Lord…casting could be disastrous.
Actually, transferring this to screen will be disastrous, I think.
I hope Lea Michele doesn’t get Elphaba – she could sing it, but her acting would come across much better onstage. Just about every star that sings would be pretty disastrous. (Amanda Seyfried as Glinda above? Eww.) Anne Hathaway is a soprano and would be lovely as Glinda. Idina and Kristin would be awesome to reprise their roles, but, as beautiful as they are, Idina’s 39, and Kristin’s almost 42. That’s too old.
I say cast unknowns in the lead roles – maybe someone who’s understudied in a production? Someone who could sing the part properly and well, and could act the part, too.
I still don’t support this. The mentioned directors would butcher this.
Totally agree to the unknowns part. It’s much more refreshing.
I just think that the picks now are too based on Lea singing Defying Gravity once on Glee, which wasn’t even the theatrical, big version we’re used to.
And I can’t even think of hearing her sing No Good Deed-you need a matured voice for that song. She has a wonderful voice, don’t get me wrong, but she sounds WAY too young to be Elphaba.
I also don’t want this to come out too soon-the live show is doing fine on its own, but I have a bad feeling about the movie taking away audiences. Wicked IS a very popular show now, and there are a lot of people gonig to see it, but how long will it be before the movie version gets more viewers than the live show that has so much magic and hard work put into it?
Egads, just don’t cast Kristin or Idina. Kristin’s amazing, but I’m pretty sure she’s moved on. Idina just should not be in it. And also… the musical is set in college & a few years past it. Kristin is 41, and Idina is 39!!
If they’re going to use people who have actually been in the show, they should go with Vicki Noon and Natalie Daradich. Perfection in singing, acting, and chemistry, and they’re both the perfect ages.
about time. JJ for the win
While Universal’s working on this, can another studio get to the “Into the Woods” adaptation? Seriously, it’s Sondheim.
I second that! They came so close back in 1997 with Billy Crystal and Susan Sarandon under Penny Marshall. This has incredible market value now, what with Shrek so successfully combining fairy tales in the past decade.
How about Catherine Zeta-Jones as the Witch, Kate Winslet as the Baker’s Wife, and Paul Giamatti as the Baker (if he can sing)?
They’ve actually been working on an Into the Woods movie, and I know such people as Vanessa Williams and Madonna have been considered for the witch.
I saw Vanessa Williams in the Broadway revival. She was adequate, but IMHO she simply hasn’t got the chops to carry a film. And besides, her name isn’t big enough to anchor it, promotionally. And I don’t think it’s my personal opinion at all that Madonna is NEVER the best choice for any acting role.
It better be in 3-D
We can only hope so!
I hope that’s a joke. Leave the 3-D hype out of this. It will be hard enough to translate the amazingness of the stage version to the screen, let alone trying to make it 3-D. There really is no reason for it to be 3-D unless you counted when she flies. And that, IMO doesn’t make it worth making the entire movie in 3-D.
But you gotta admit that the last part of “defying gravity” on 3-D would be awesome O_O!!!
This movie screams out for Liza and a digitally reincarnated Judy.
Liza as what…the goat?
Do you know anything about this show?
Donna Langley could be the worst studio exec in the business. This is yet another weak attempt at finding titles that you can back a movie into. Desperate Donna strikes again. Smells like her Thunderbirds, Connie and Carla, Wimbeldon and Chronicles of Riddick slate all over again.
I say if they’re gonna do this the only way it’ll be good is if they go with Broadway performers that have been in the show in the past. Perhaps Megan Hilty for Galinda (the best Galinda ever in my opinion), Sebastian Arcelus for Fiyero (He really is the only actor i’ve seen truly capture the role of Fiyero PERFECTLY) and maybe Eden Espinosa as Elphaba (She’s incredible in the role especially when it’s opposite Megan’s Galinda). That’s just my suggestion.
I agree with this totally!!! Eden and Megan would be heaven. And please do not cast Zac Efron as Fiyero.
Yes, please!! Eden and Megan are the two leads I would see in my dream production of Wicked, hehe.
Also, for people saying “no” to Idina and Kristin on the basis that they’re too old, why can’t they just use Hollywood magic? They did it for Brad in Benjamin Button and for everyone in Avatar, so I don’t see why they couldn’t do it for two witches. Or, they could cast Eden and Megan for when Galinda and Elphaba are in Shiz and Idina and Kristin after they’ve matured. It’s an option at least
Also, remember that Elpahaba will be wearing green make-up stuff, so her age wont show too much in her appearance.
Billie Burke (Glinda in 1939′s Wizard of Oz) was 54 when she played the part. Margaret Hamilton (The WWW) was 37. Neither Kristin nor Idina is too old to pull any of it off so those that say otherwise, get over it.
Joss Whedon should direct this.
When would he have time to? He’s attached to so many projects. I agree that he would do a fantastic job but I think The Avengers is going to keep him busy for a while.
I will have died and gone to heaven.
I think Joss would put down the comics for awhile to direct a major musical motion picture. Besides that guy needs a huge win, he’s well overdue.
The Oz front is more crowded than this — The Witches of Oz 3D with Sean Astin, Billy Boyd and Christopher Lloyd as the wizard himself is in post-prod right now. The shot of the Emerald City devouring Manhattan at the end of the trailer is spooky.
I’ve been waiting for this project to happen for years, even though it’s going to screw my own Oz Project(by the way there are at least two OTHER non-musical Oz projects out there in development other than the 2 at WB and the one at Disney).
I’d love to see Kristen and Idina together again but they are mortal enemies – they won’t even be in the same room together. They wouldn’t even be on the set of Glee on the same day so they wouldn’t run into each other and they seat them on opposite sides of the Tony Awards auditorium.
I think Phantom’s suggestion of Amanda and Anne is PERFECT! I’d go see that in a second!
They’re hardly mortal enemies… they’re just friends that have drifted apart, which happens! There was a lovely picture of them together at the Tonys a few weeks ago. They weren’t on the set of Glee on the same day because they weren’t actually in any of the same episodes. Don’t be ridiculous.
They aren’t enemies. There is, in fact, a photo around of Kristin and Idina together at this year’s Tonys.
okay the idea of anne and amanda seriously needs to be thrown away. hello, wicked needs amazing VOCAL PROWESS. you’ve all seen the musical. use your brain, those 2 couldn’t ever possibly handle the show. great joke.
Considering the did Wicked together for a good while, I think if they were casted the could work it out. I don’t know where you are getting your information but they aren’t mortal enemies. It has been a while since they did Wicked together so they probably aren’t nearly as close they once were but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are at each others throats, be real.
Actually, Demi Moore’s production company (which was housed at Universal) bought the rights to Gregory Maguire’s novel WICKED back in the early 90s. When her company folded, the rights reverted to Universal.
They had a script by Linda Woolverton, which Platt wouldn’t give the time of day to while head of production.
Lea Michele and Anna Kendrick are ideal for the leads.
And how about P.J. Hogan for director? He’s had some experience directing musical numbers (“Muriel’s Wedding,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding”), and proved that he could finesse CGI with the underrated “Peter Pan.” Plus, he’d probably be a bargain for the studio.
I shudder at the thought of Rob Marshall directing the property. (Ryan Murphy is an interesting choice, but the jury’s still out on whether he’s a “film director.” I’d like to see what he did with “Eat, Pray, Love” before signing off–”Glee” or no “Glee.)
What about Kevin Kline and (yawn) Streep for Madame Morrible and Oz?
Excellent director choice. I think P.J. Hogan would be the perfect match. And you’re right. “Peter Pan” is still woefully underappreciated.

And where is one to get the budget to cast all these Hollywood superstars? They would spend all their money on actors and have nothing left to do the important things: MAKING THE MOVIE, for one.
that would be the most expensive cast…. ever.
For those of you citing the ages of Menzel and Chenoweth — just how many years ago was the show done?
Yeah, just six years ago.
And it’s not as if Wicked is all that realistic to begin with.

Stage is different to screen. You can get away with being older on stage. And they were pushing it a bit then anyway. Nuff said.
JJ or Marshall for the win
Normally I would say yes . But they are past schoolgirl age Lea would be perfect
