EXCLUSIVE: The smash hit stage musical Wicked is taking its first formative steps toward the movie screen. I’m told the musical’s producer Marc Platt, book writer Winnie Holzman, and songwriter Stephen Schwartz have begun meeting with filmmakers. Insiders confirm that JJ Abrams, James Mangold, Ryan Murphy, and Rob Marshall are among the directors who’ve met or otherwise thrown their hat in the ring. More meetings will take place when the musical’s authors come to town in the fall. The film will be made at Universal, which produced the stage musical with Platt.
After the billion dollar gross of Alice In Wonderland, studios are combing their fairy tale books for classics. It’s crowded on the Oz front –Disney attached Sam Raimi to The Great and Powerful Oz, and Warner Bros has more than one film in development. But the $2 billion in global stage grosses for Wicked put it in league with Mamma Mia!, the long-running stage musical whose movie transfer grossed over $600 million worldwide for Universal.
Wicked, a Wizard of Oz prequel, is based on the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and focuses on the early relationship between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, a green-skinned beauty before she ended up flying on a broomstick. Wicked began as a movie development project with Platt and Universal, before they changed course and took it to the stage first. It was an immediate sensation, quickly recouping its $14 million capitalization in 2004 and becoming one of the biggest grossing tuners of all time, with the Broadway show and eight touring companies. The Broadway musical routinely tops the weekly gross charts–$1.4 million per week is average, but the musical has broken the $2 million mark more than once. The musical shows no signs of winding down, the reason its architects haven’t been in a rush to mount a movie — until now.
As for the directors on the list, Abrams is an intriguing choice despite never having done a musical (he’s composed themes for several of his series’ creations). Knight and Day director Mangold is also a musical newcomer, though he directed the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. Murphy has put himself on the musical map with Glee, on which he’s not only exec producer but executive music producer. Marshall has the lengthiest musical resume having directed and choreographed Annie and the Oscar-winning Chicago. But he is coming off the misfire Nine, a film that had Platt among its producers.
The movie can’t come soon enough for Universal, which has several musicals in the works. The studio is trying to mount a Mamma Mia! sequel, is eye-ing a new version of Billy Elliot based on the successful stage musical (Universal is one of its producers). The studio is also working on a movie transfer of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, recently hiring Kenny Ortega aboard as director and choreographer. Ortega directed the High School Musical trilogy and the Michael Jackson docu This Is It.

LET’S GET DIANA ROSS!! SHE’LL BE G-R-E-A-T!
(just kidding)
and Cher…
(kidding too)
The best Wizard of Oz based screenplay in play is “Magna Kansas”- by a mile.
Lea Michelle would win an Oscar as Elphaba in the film role. It’s slam dunk casting.
I’d even check to see if the blonde who plays Quinn in Glee could handle Glinda.
But knowing the no talent morons that populate Marc Platt productions, namely his #1 nepotism lap dog Adam Siegal, they’ll screw this up.
Dianna Agron aka Quinn could NOT handle the vocal in Wicked not even close.
AGREED!! Lea Michelle would be an amazing Elphaba!
This is a chance for hollywood to be daring and brave and actually cast people who can sing. Really sing. That means no one working in hollywood right now. They should forgo “stars” (which don’t exist anymore) and hire really talented people and make a great film. The audience will come in droves because they don’t want to waste their money on celebrities pretending to sing.
I foresee Adam Lambert’s film debut…
You bite your tongue…that would be a horrible horrible decision!
@ Ellen: excuse me? personally, i would choose zac efron to play fiyero, but i haven’t seen him try it. i HAVE, however, seen adam lambert sing ‘as long as you’re mine’, and i have never been so absorbed in that song or heard it performed more beautifully and emotionally than i did the night i saw adam lambert perform it. so YOU bite YOUR tongue!
adam lambert is a much different guy nowadays. he’s known for his antics, and this is where he wants to be. he’s no fiyero anymore. not that he couldn’t sing it, he’s just different now.
I think Adam Lambert could pull it off… He’s not that bad
Agreed! NO, NO, NO to lambert.
Why not Adam Lambert? His degree was in musical theater and he played the role in the L.A. cast before his American Idol days. He actually has a nicely trained instrument (unlike many pop stars).
It would be sort of like how Fergie (Stacy Ferguson) was absolutely amazing in the film version of Nine (though the rest of the cast was atrocious). She could really sing the musical theater repertoire and not sound like a pop singer trying to sing musical theater (cringing at the memory of Madonna in Evita). If Adam Lambert were to play the role, I guarantee he would be unrecognizable as himself… One of the few pop stars that can do that…
Absolutely. Lambert.
No thanks. I am HUGE wicked fan, and can’t wait for the movie. There are more talented, less annoying options than Adam Lambert. If he is cast in a main role, I may not see the movie.
He’d be the reason I’d go…even if the uber annoying Lea Michelle was cast.
Great point!
Let’s indeed have people who can sing. Quasi actor / singers with their voices doctored by the sound producers so they sound OK is a load of old crock.
All this talk about casting is interesting enough, but no one has addressed the one BIG problem with the musical…. it’s not actually ABOUT anything. There’s no central conflict. Stuff just sort of happens. It’s all about the characters and their interactions with each other…. which by all means is great for a Broadway show, where you have to deal with a limited amount of static sets. But it’s going to make a TERRIBLE movie… unless they get an actual plot to drive the narrative.
For those of you that have seen the show… think about it. What’s the main conflict? That the two girls hate each other? That’s resolved by the midpoint. What’s the other conflict? That the Wizard is trying to capture the Wicked Witch? That doesn’t even start until AFTER the midpoint.
There are reasons why movies are structured the way that they are… and unfortunately stage shows just aren’t compatible. If they want this to be successful, they’re going to have to make some major changes.
Um, what are you on about? There IS a main conflict – the Animals no longer being able to speak and losing their rights. It’s what propels Elphaba to go to the Wizard and make the choices she makes.
Thank you!
(at least someone paid attention to the story)
Please. How many times did they even mention Animals in the second act? Once. When she sees the Wizard again. That’s the only time we actually see her do anything for the Animals… and she’s not even really there for them to begin with. The rest is just exposition.
Actually, it’s a coming-of-age story. The main plot is Elphaba learning to accept herself for who she truly is, and Glinda learning what is truly good. It’s good vs. evil, environmental activism, and finding independence. It’s not that there is no plot, there are several.
I found it to be a bit over rated.
This is exactly why the movie’s producers should instead lean towards adapting the original source material – Maguire’s novel. Unlike the musical, the novel really did have a plot, a point, and some pretty powerful underlying themes.
OK, I’m not some long time Wicked fan — I just saw it for the first time last night (spectacular!). But I have to say that if you didn’t understand the central conflict, the plot, the theme, then you were not paying attention.
The story is 100% about politics, bigotry, oppression, anarchy. It’s a fight between the powerful and the weak. The central conflict is that Oz isn’t some fairytale land at all, but a nation where those in power seek to remain in power by demonizing the animals, enslaving them, and making an enemy of them. Elphaba sees through it and revolts against the establishment, and she turns out to be a better enemy than the animals ever could have been, so the Wizard exploits that, and uses the people’s fear of her and her perceived terrorism to control the people, and keep from scrutinizing his rule. Sound familiar?
Did any women directors meet for this project?! Julie Taymor would knock this out of the park, as would so many others.
Julie Taymor?! Ut, no. Not if you want the movie to implode in a mass of pretentiousness.
However great her stagework may be, her movie work has been atrocious. Titus, the conversion of Shakespeare’s hilarious proto-Scream/revenge-tragedy parody was played straight and came off as a turgid, static mess. Across the Universe, despite amazing visuals had no forward momentum because with the exception of Being For the Benefit of Mister Kite, which was absolutely butchered, the respectable arrangements of the rest of the songs were all the same tempo, resulting in the movie having absolutely no forward momentum.
Might as well have M. Night Shyamalan direct it. Same thing.
— Rob
The director really is so important for a film like this– blending the music, the comedy, the drama and the fantastic all together, seamlessly. Many directors are good at just one or two elements– but creating real characters with sincere emotion in a world like Oz?
I hope it isn’t Rob Marshall– he really is just an over-rated hack. Chicago was mediocre and Nine sucked. Abrams and Mangold are solid choices.
If Universal were smart, they’d shoot for the stars on this one. Look to lure Zemeckis back to live-action filming. Ron Howard is a good, if not obvious choice. I also like Brad Bird and I think he’d hit it out of the park.
If you wanted to take a chance, maybe go with someone like Michael Mayer, who’s directed hits on Broadway and has feature film experience, or David Frankel who elevated Devil Wears Prada to another level.
Ryan Murphy? God help us. Lea Michelle? God help us again. Please keep these two overrated ‘talents’ away from this project. Please.
I’m all for a JJ Abrams film. Hopefully, he’ll pull a ‘Star Trek’ reboot and go out to cast relative unknowns (so to speak).
And guys…Amanda Seyfried? Am I the only one that thinks she looks a little too rough around the edges for a role like Glenda??
Chenoweth and Menzel reprising their roles is much more likely to happen than Lea Michele being cast…
lea would be the obvious/current choice for elphaba….but isn’t she cast in an animation movie with an oz theme….(get OUT OF THAT CONTRACT if WICKED is moving forward…)….i think she’s had a bad patch recently…and i guess no one will know until you see what happens with the film, burlesque….but i always thought that christina aguillera could be a choice for galinda….she had the disney training as a kid….but have to see what happens with her movie….i think they waited too long for Idina and Kristin to do it….but they would be great….and like the whole GLEE thing or not….it’d definitely got a HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL feel to it…and i love the ALLY MCBEAL vibe of the show…(am i showing my age….lol….i kind of think that Amanda S doesn’t have the “charm” for the part….whatever you think of WICKED….it’s such a beloved piece…so whatever they do….i HOPE they don’t screw it up….and despite the misstep of NINE….i hope Rob Marshall gets the gig….(i’m rooting for the hometown pittsburgh guy…)…he really has the chops for the the big production that WICKED will be…and he could really throw in less than obvious choices…i mean…who knew that Rene Zellweger could sing when she was cast in CHICAGO…(AND ROBBED OF THE OSCAR)….
DIANA ROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND GOD HELP US!
Doubtful Zac Efron would be in this, for all those that keep listing him as Fiyero.
I feel he’s probably going to be the “star” of the younger actors– Elphaba and Glinda are probably going to be newcomers, based on the success of Hairspray. Hollywood’s desperately looking for new actors, but the movie would need a few “names” in it. So they would cast current stars for the supporting roles, and for Fiyero for all the swooning fangirls (after all, production companies do want to make money), and Elphaba would most certainly be a new talent no one had ever heard of because it would bring more press.
Zac Efron’s the right age. And like him or not, he can play the self-assured, arrogant kid who has a change of heart (Fiyero), as we saw in Hairspray.
What about Bill Condon directing? Loved DreamGirls!
didn’t kristin and idina have clauses in their original wicked contracts that give them first pass at the roles in any movie made? Wicken takes place when the girls go to boarding school and also years later…so why can’t idina and kristin play the older roles and then have two younger actresses play the girls when they were in school?
Double cast…. young and older… Julia Murney was the best Elphaba. She acts her songs to perfection
I couldn’t agree more on Julia Murney!!! I was fortunate enough to run a proscenium spot light for the show (16 performances) and she was absolutely mezmerizing in the role, both acting and singing.
Omg I love you for this comment.
All these actors are too old. “Wicked” is about high school kids, by the time this movie starts production Reese Witherspoon will be a soccer mom.
Elphaba – Lea Michele. She already knocked “Defying Gravity” our of the park on “Glee”.
Glinda the good girl doesn’t have to sing as well as Elphaba – Taylor Swift.
Fiyero – Justin Bieber.
Madame Morrible – Meryl
The Wizard – Christopher Walken
Are you SERIOUS?
1. Since when does Glinda not have to sing well? She pretty much covers every genre. There’s even opera arias in her part!
2. They’re COLLEGE students, not high school students.
3. Taylor Swift? I seriously doubt Taylor could cover “Popular” and do it justice let alone “No One Mourns The Wicked”.
4. Justin Beiber? One, he’s sixteen. Two, he sounds like HE could play Glinda (Not well, I might add). Fiyero is supposed to be masculine.. not girly.
5. If they can age people in “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button”, they could def make Idina & Kristin look younger. They should play the parts.. but I’m worried they won’t.
6. If they can’t get the original cast, they should pick unknown actors who have theater experience. They could even get a past Glinda/Elphaba who’s younger.
These people will RUIN Wicked if they pick a crappy director or well-known hollywood actors. (I’m starting to hope they don’t make a movie at all…)
And you sound like you have NO idea what Wicked is about.
Couldn’t agree with you more – Galinda has to hit the stratosphere – don’t see the spastic Taylor Swift playing this role ever. Some else mentioned Carrie Underwood – maybe. But, the actor doesn’t have to be a blonde – lol!! I saw a touring company in St. Louis recently – and those cast members had it all and I must say the one playing Galinda had really nailed the part as played by Kristin Chenowith – which is, of course, the defining interpretation. If you are at all familiar with Kristin – you will see her handprint (voice print??) all OVER that character – it was made for her.
Taylor Swift’s voice is too low for Glinda
AGREE, AGREE, AGREE. The fate of Wicked would be RUINED if these people were cast.
Though I would enjoy seeing Justin Beiber attempt Glinda >:D
From my VERY limited knowledge of Taylor Swift, she could not handle the role of Glinda. The range is all over the place. The operatic parts of “Thank Goodness” and “No One Mourns the Wicked” are definitely out of her range.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! NOT JUSTIN BIEBER!!!!!!!! HE WOULD RUIN THE ENTIRE MOVIE!!! PLUS, HES WAAAY TO YOUNG TO PULL OFF FIYERO!!!
Marc Platt produced “RACHEL GETTING MARRIED” – the film that yielded Anne Hathaway’s great Oscar nominated performance. So, I’m sure he has Anne in mind for “Wicked”. By the way, Hathaway kicked ass when she performed with Hugh Jackman at the 2009′s Academy Awards. She needs to do a movie music ASAP.
I am sorry, non of these Oz movies will probably ever get made. Unfortunately everyone is tied up for the next 3 years. As Rhubarb posted earlier in the post “WITCHES OF OZ 3D” is already in post production and all over the web. it has
Christopher Lloyd – The Wizard
Sean Astin- Frick
Lance Henrickson – Henry Gale
Mia Sara- Princess Languidere
Billy Boyd- Nick Chopper
Ethan Embry-Frack
Jeffery Combs – Frank

how can there be any other choice. I can see the two posters now – Glinda standing alone, small and in the center, with the tagline “No One Mourns the Wicked” in big bold letters, and another poster with Elphaba standing alone small and in the center with the tagline “Everyone Deserves a Chance to Fly”.
ITS GONNA BE GREAT!
Um, Idina and Kristin are NOT enemies at all. Where did you get that from?
Noo wayy idina menzel all the way!!
I hope no one like Zac Efron is considered for the movie. I watched the movies he was in and wanted to BARF.
Lea Michele would be amazing for Elphaba and Jonathan Groff as Fiero would be Epic their chemistry is amazing on and off screen
I seriously hope they don’t cast Lea as elphaba. Its not that i don’t like her but i just don’t think she deserves the role. She is perfect on glee but not an elphie. I think they should cast an unknown or one of the many elphies including standbys/understudies. I would love to see eden espinosa but i don’t think that would happen
i also think they should do the same with glinda. I believe the more a-list stars they hire will cause the meaning and true story of wicked to be hidden. I just hope they cast right!!
Okay whoever casted Taylor Swift as Glinda saying “Glinda doesn’t have to sing as well as Elphie” is… um, crazy. In many ways Glinda’s vocal part in this show is far more demanding than Elphaba’s with a range going up to a C6 (with optional notes ranging up to a G6)- I’m sorry but no “movie” or “pop” star could ever hit that.
I think they’re best to stick with Broadway stars in the casting, but not the original cast. I think Megan Hilty and Helene Yorke are good options for Glinda; Stephanie J. Block, Shoshana Bean, or Eden Espinosa for Elphaba.
