EXCLUSIVE: Edi Gathegi, who played a chillingly evil vampire in Twilight and Twilight Saga: New Moon, is joining X-Men: First Class in the role of Darwin. That character, the first bi-racial mutant (in the comic series), has the power of “reactive evolution,” which allows him to adapt to any situation or environment. Plunged underwater, he’ll grow gills, he’ll gain night vision in pitch black and his skin grows fire retardant when burned.
Gathegi, who played Laurent in the Twilight films, just wrapped production on the Paul Johansson-directed adaptation of the Ayn Rand novel Atlas Shrugged. He’s repped by Paradigm and Framework.
X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn has set James McAvoy to play Xavier, Michael Fassbender to play Magneto, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Nicholas Hoult to play Beast, Jennifer Lawrence to play Mystique, Caleb Landry Jones to play Banshee and Lucas Till to play Havoc. Kevin Bacon is playing the villain.

he doesn’t look very bi-racial to me; he looks pretty mono-racial
The darkest black person can be just as, if not more mixed than the lightest one. You never know how people will come out.
Thanks for being the first to make that terribly obvious and dense comment, though.
you can also have 2 Nigerian parents have a white non-albino baby; just not very often
What the fuck does it matter what color he is, or if he’s the first bi-racial, black, or purple mutant in an x-men film. Who gives a shit? If he’s a good actor, then great. Its people like you and the author who are so obsessed with titles and classifications that this kinda shit is even an issue. He got the part, great, lets treat him like an actor and not a “bi-racial mutant”.
In the comic book he’s a person of color. That’s why it matters.
People like you are annoy. You whine if someone suggests Spiderman should be played by a person of color. You whine when a person of color for which the character is meant to be played. You whine that others are being PC is the Last Airbender had a white dude playing an Asian one.
The picture that you form is that only white people are suppose to play roles or else there is something wrong. So, it matters if a person of color plays a role because there are folks like you saying that it doesn’t matter when obviously it matters to you a lot.
People like you are annoy. I never made any statement that would reflect that i believe that “only white people are suppose to play roles or else there is something wrong”. In fact you apparently have a hard time grasping the meaning of my comment, as you clearly have a hard time grasping the english language. Again, People like you are annoy.
I wouldnt attack the auther haha, dont attack the auther he’s giving fact which is his job, this particular character WAS the first Bi-Racial character in the X-men universe. the person that should be slandered is the first to post which was a dumb dense and arrogant-ignorant comment. it doesnt matter what the guy looks like, only if he can pull it off. he’s from ‘Twilight’ so im not holding my breath haha. the rest of the cast looks decent, some of them seem younger than i could have expected, and with X-Men Origins Wolverine this DEF. is not on my MUST SEE list. also adding to that list is the SPider-Man reboot – which is just being made cause SONY HAS to, to keep the rights to it. plus ppl raked on the third spidey, but it really wasnt bad enough to reboot a franchise or ruin loyalty with a talented director who maybe -needed a break to do his OWN type of movies only to return with McGuire and Cast to knock another SPidey outta the park like the second. Personally i think all these names ( Xmen, DareDevil, Spider-Man.etc) should be returned to their rightfull owners of the mixed studio aid of Marvel-Disney-Paramount cause they obviously know how a superhero movie should be done. i was very excited myself to see that the title character and joint characters of “The Punisher” comics returned to the Marvel Studios…cant wait till Thor, CAP and the Avengers… the rest of these titles can blow me.
That’s not how genetics works.
Uh, yes it is. It may not fit neatly into Punnett squares, but it’s reality. There are people born both significantly darker than and significantly lighter than both of their parents
Sorry to rock your world but, while highly unlikely, two blue-eyed parents can produce a brown-eyed baby and two fair-skinned parents can produce a dark-skinned baby.
>>>>c4x said : “The darkest black person can be just as, if not more mixed than the lightest one.”
Except that he is not mixed AT ALL. Not even remotely.
He is Kenyan born with both parents 100% Kenyan and no white (or any other race) blood whatsoever in his lineage, as is typical for a lot of black people in East and Central Africa.
Most black people can easily tell you the difference between someone who is pure black and just happens to be very light skinned, and someone of mixed race and/or heritage.
He is neither.
Just pure black with very dark complexion.
But whether he’s actually mixed or not is irrelevant to the original poster’s ignorant comment. He clearly thinks that you need to look like Mariah Carey or Vanessa Williams to look “mixed”, which is not the case.
again, I don’t think they understand how genetics works.
It is sad that our educational system has failed you.
Do not blame the education system, Do you you blame the purse maker when he is given sows ears?
In the comic, Darwin was more humanoid looking than human. As such, I suspect Gathegi, will be covered with makeup.
Frankly, I’m not sure why they would have to label the character as a “biracial mutant” given that in the X-Men’s world, mutants are considered a “race.”
Hopefully, this X-Men film will be better than its predecessors.
Yay! I’ve been waiting to see Edi Gathegi in something else! Loved you since House Edi!
Ah, finally one decent comment!
Go Edi!!
“the first bi-racial mutant”
So will that make me racist if it turns out like all of the other X-men movies, and i think it sucks?
Also, wouldn’t Namor be the first bi-racial mutant?
Namor would indeed be the first bi-racial mutant. And I can also name off dozens who appeared long before Darwin chronologically. His first appearance wasn’t until 2005/2006 when he was inserted into continuity retroactively.
Even though I am a fan of Brubaker, the character’s origin and appearance are, frankly, insulting. He EVOLVED to be whiter as a reaction to being surrounded by a lot of white people..? Excuse me?
I am bi-racial (Native American and German) and my wife is Japanese, making my children an even further mix. They, nor I, go around trumpetting this fact as an identity. I turned down financial aid based upon my heritage, rather than my merits because to accept such would be to say that I am somehow DIFFERENT than others and set apart because of a happenstance of my birth.
Bottom line, it’s a character with adaptation as a mutant power. The ethnicity of the actor should be unimportant… only his acting abilities. I sincerely hope he’s written merely as a character and not as some sort of one-note cliche, because he has a great actor playing him and should be given the proper chance to shine…
Plus, they didn’t mention was two races make him bi-racial. It doesn’t always mean be has to be black and white.
Good point.
In fact, Wikipedia lists Darwin the character as ‘half-black and half-latino’.
Gathegi doesn’t look remotely Latino.
apparently you don’t live in New York.
He doesn’t? Go to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, etc. Or NYC, DC, Philly. He could just as easily be Latino.
Edi Gathegi is a brilliant actor. Looking forward to seeing the movie!
YES! So glad to see Edi get this role. He was awesome in Gone Baby Gone (small role).
No matter what he is an amazing actor. I would love to buy him a fish sandwich!
Awesome actor! Congrats to him!
With so many great characters in the comics, why create new ones?
They didn’t create a new one, he first appeared 5ish years ago.
What the hell is a bi-racial mutant?
Huh? What do you mean what is a bi-racial mutant? He’s a mutant….like all the other X-men characters. And he happens to be bi-racial. Are you dense?
Amazing talent. Hollywood execs take notice. Bravo! Its nice to see real thespians land these roles.
Big comic fan, but I’ve never heard of Darwin. Wish they’d include The Orphan!
There is no way that you are a big comics fan if you don’t know who Darwin is. He’s a character who played prominently in the rise of Vulcan (one of the Summers brothers) as the leader of the Shiar. THis is a story arc that lasted several years. He is now currently a member of X-factor, which is considered one of the better Xmen books along with Atonishing Xmen, in the last few years. How does anyone claiming to be a big comic books fan not know this?
Because there are more to comics than X-Men and superheroes. I, too, am a big comic fan—a big Marvel fan, even—but I have never heard of Darwin before, and I don’t touch the X-Men comics with a ten-foot pole.
this conversation would make more sense if we were not discussing an xmen movie. anyone’s expertise on comics is only as useful as they have actually read the comics which form the base of the discussion. I thought that would be obvious. Perhaps not.
Being a big comic fan doesn’t necessary mean you’re out there reading every title as soon as it’s released off the press.
I’ve been reading comics every since the day I could walk and I’m vaguely familiar with the character of Darwin. There’s too much of a glut of X-men titles out on the stands that can’t just be covered with one paycheck.

I actually read a lot of x-men, but with 18 or 19 or 500 titles they have going, I’ve never once encountered this character. Oh well.
I have heard of banshee, though, and does anyone else think someone with the power to scream might make a rough viewing experience?
except this is about an xmen movie. I read a lot of comic books too. I don’t read experimental comic books. You wouldn’t see me announce I am a big comic book fan as a means if someone discusses experimental comics. It just doesn’t make much sense.
This is great news! Edi is such a talented actor. X-Men: First Class is looking just that — FIRST CLASS
i thought “bi-racial” edi might look like jason kidd or halle berry.
I think Edi will just do fine with the character. I think he deserves this break and I can’t hardly wait for the new X-Men movie.
I see that they’ll have to CGI his skin to look lighter. As is he looks about as multi-racial as Sidney Poitier. Or take a page from our President: look Black, sound White.
Truly brilliant actor…
Oh PLEASE. X-Men have had Black characters for a long, long time. Bishop, Storm, that snooty rich girl in Gen X, and so on. Crikey Bishop dates back to the mid 80′s at least.
Some of the X-Men comics have amusingly had Black (human) characters rail against Mutants as “impure” etc to the horror of their secretly mutant kids.
Big yawn. Another Black mutant — the comics had them for around 40 years or so.
And there is no such thing as “bi-racial.” Barack Obama despite a White mother sure as hell did not check the box “White” nor has he ever identified as White, see Halle Berry, Mariah Carey, etc. Heck he even wrote a book about it. No one ever identifies as “White” (who’d want to — Mariah Carey as a White girl would be a minor contestant on American Idol, maybe).
Plus the character is lame. All powers and no character.
“the comics had them for around 40 years or so.”
And how many of those were ever in lead roles? Power Man (Luke Cage) is the first I remember, and he was a blaxploitation caricature at the time. Most were relegated to sidekick status (Falcon or War Machine), and lets not even talk about how half of them seemed be required to have “Black” as the first part of their name (Black Lightening/Goliath).
“And the guy who said that mutants are their own distinct race is also correct – they are considered homo superior.”
No, that would make them a different species, not a different race, though bad writers like a draw a heavy-handed parallel, even though it’s been done to death at this point.
Kevin -
Were you asleep during the time when New Line released three Blade movies and a tv series?

At first I thought it was a typo – and that they meant bi-sexual. But then I remembered that Disney would never go for that.
Apparently they mean his mother is one race, and his father another (guessing white and black) – although I’d point out that there is no such thing as a human who is purely one race – it doesn’t exist. Everybody is made up of a long line of racial inputs.
Anyway – the guy who said that Namor was actually the first bi-racial character was correct. He is half human and half Atlantean.
And the guy who said that mutants are their own distinct race is also correct – they are considered homo superior.
But most of all…….who gives a shit?
Thank you sir for making the sense that I could not. People like you are not annoy.
Thank you sir, for making the point that I was unable to make clearly. WHO GIVES A SHIT!? People like you are not annoy.
at the rate fox is adding x-men characters to first class they may wind up over loading the film that the franchise could be headed to Disney after first class or make x-men no longer workable as a movie any more given that fox is trying with first class to make it like xmen three too many characters on board not enough story.
he’s a great actor. but i’ll have to agree. he’s not bi-racial. and i too thought first the headline said ‘bi-sexual.’ because i mean, he’d be more apt to be the later bi than the former bi. not that i have any inside information. i’m just rambling.
And…. here comes the nerd rant. I’m all fir giving good actors work and Edi is tops but sometimes the material trumps the talent and this is one of those times. Darwin, the evolutionary boy should not be in this film. He was barely even an X-Men in the comics. I mean, he’s only been around for less than a decade. He’s nowhere near the “first class”. I understand that most movie goers aren’t comic book fans so changes need to be made in order to appeal to the masses, but come on! Please meet us halfway! I can overlook the inclusion of Emma Frost since shebos technically invert same age group as the original “first class” but Darwin nowhere near. I apologize for my fanboyism but it just feels not only are they completely ignoring the source material but are rubbing it in the face of the people who enjoy these characters the most.
Was Sam Cassell not available?
Which character is made up? Darwin IS in the comics.
