EXCLUSIVE: Edi Gathegi, who played a chillingly evil vampire in Twilight and Twilight Saga: New Moon, is joining X-Men: First Class in the role of Darwin. That character, the first bi-racial mutant (in the comic series), has the power of “reactive evolution,” which allows him to adapt to any situation or environment. Plunged underwater, he’ll grow gills, he’ll gain night vision in pitch black and his skin grows fire retardant when burned.
Gathegi, who played Laurent in the Twilight films, just wrapped production on the Paul Johansson-directed adaptation of the Ayn Rand novel Atlas Shrugged. He’s repped by Paradigm and Framework.
X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn has set James McAvoy to play Xavier, Michael Fassbender to play Magneto, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Nicholas Hoult to play Beast, Jennifer Lawrence to play Mystique, Caleb Landry Jones to play Banshee and Lucas Till to play Havoc. Kevin Bacon is playing the villain.

Oh dear. A bunch of comments about biracial people by ignorant white people.
I just realized people are really really stupid.
and what interesting to me is, these bozo’s are 100% convinced that they are not.

Just mention something about race and the idiots come out of the woodwork.

Lmao. perfect.
Edi is truly a talented actor….He is way more than “Twilight”…
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
I directed Edi in a short right after he moved to town, and I have been a total cheerleader for him ever since. Almost embarassingly so
I’m very, very happy that he’s getting this opportunity AND this attention, so thanks Mike and the Deadline team for reporting this one.
Two quick points:
1. While Darwin was *created* in the last decade, the character is part of a “lost X-Men team” that predates the membership of more familiar characters like Wolverine, Storm, etc. As such, given the movies’ reconfigured timeline, he is a perfectly reasonable character to use in a prequel story.
2. This means that while, chronologically, Darwin might have been the first bi-racial mutant, he was definitely NOT the first bi-racial mutant that Marvel writers have created. One easy example is Sunspot from the New Mutants who debuted back in 1984. He was Brazilian, with a black father and a white mother. I’m sure there have been a number of other examples in the intervening years (and quite possibly before as well).

I agree that people are saying things they should not on here but your “ignorant white people” remark is just as ignorant. It’s funny how you assume all these idiotic statements are made by white people.
However, I will agree on the quotes. perfect
Edi Gathegi is the real deal, he’s got serious acting chops. His work in House and Gone Baby Gone speaks for itself. Glad to see his talent being recognized.
Im kenyan and even i dnt find eddie convincingly “bi-racial” but race in the the potrayal of his character shouldn’t in any way play any role whether he gets an oscar or does a shity job!can’t wait for the movie, so all you racists and race sensitive freaks can go subscribe to tha klan(kkk) and brotherhood movement respectively!
Yaah..go edi go!1st bi-racial mutant?hope you wont be the last!
Whatever u say, Edi is getting paid and ur not! I mean he came all the way from Kenya, and he is making a better living than u all who are so racist! He get to be on the big screen and you have to pay for the movie, to see a movie he is on. So how about you and me,agree he is a lucky man! Good job Edi!! keep it up!! we love uuuuuu
I think Edi did great on his “Darwin” appearance on X-Men: First Class. It is sad that he just can’t do more of his role after this one but I definitely to see his other films.
