Today the website Fearnet had an interview with film producer Wyck Godfrey about the Twilight Saga, and the subject of a long-in-the-works Janis Joplin biopic came up. Godfrey mentioned in passing that Amy Adams would play the 1960s singer. I can tell you that Amy is indeed confirmed in the role for the film to be directed by Fernando Meirelles (City Of God). There’s no studio involved yet, and the script has been through several drafts. Many have tried and failed to get a Janis Joplin biopic off the ground. I recall Pink delivered an impressive screen-test for Penelope Spheeris on an earlier and different Joplin project.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Very out of left field but Amy is very talented. Would still like to see Pink involved though. Can’t say much of her acting but she has the presence and voice and isn’t that what you need for something like this?
Janis Joplin – the Barbie doll version. Right. Can’t wait to see Adams get ugly and shoot up.
I think everyone’s hoping that Adams (and the director) could pull out something amazing, but be serious. Not the voice, not the look, not the swagger or vulgar gravitas. Unless she wants an Oscar nom bad enough to take testosterone treatments….
If Adams wants to stretch, she should do it in a fictional role. Janis Joplin deserves her due, not the kind of vamping and wishful thinking that’s going to go into this.
I heard this on the radio and laughed so hard I almost had to stop the car. Seriously folks??? First we get Ashley Simpson in Chicago and Katherine Zeta Jones in A Little Night Music. Katie Holmes faked a song and dance…Joaquin and Reese bored us silly in the Johnny Cash movie. Maybe Joss Stone (Is that the right spelling?) can do the singing. Oh well, if Taylor Swift can wing awards for vocal performance, anything can happen. I always wonder why if these people are supposedly such great singers, why they don’t have singing careers??
The very thought of Amy Adams as Janis Joplin makes me sick! This is total nonrespect of her memory and those of us that loved her. Where did this hare-brained scheme come from? Disgusted! Disappointed! Just wrong!
who the hell is janis joplin? no one from my generation knows who that is, and none of us care. make it for lifetime people.
- 22 year old
Narcissists usually don’t care about anyone or anything except themselves or those they can relate to. Nice show of weakness, Danny.
The Runaways made no money, and no one went to see it. and that starred kristan stewart. danny is right, don’t think anyone will go see this.
shame,… look Wikipedia, You Tube, I can’t belive
30 years old
Danny, i am 19 and I know who Janis Joplin is. Some of us do listen to classic rock because it was and still is amazing so don’t lump us all together. Maybe those who only listen to rap don’t know and don’t care because that isn’t the music they are into. But that’s just one group of people. And you probably heard Janis before.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janis_Joplin
I’m 24 and I think most people in our age range who are even remotely in tune to the music world know who Janis Joplin is. I definitely think you need to broaden your musical horizons, Danny.
27 yrs old here, ashamed of Danny’s ignorance.
And why exactly do you have to know who she is? Hers is a great story and a great story will always appeal to people. I would argue it’s even more exciting to be introduced to a singer of the past you are not familiar with and to get into the music as it is for some Joplin fanboy to see the film. The most successful music biopics were ones that introduced artists of the past to a new generation. Like La Bamba just to name one off the top of my head. That song became top of the charts again when that film was released because of a new generation of fans.
@ Danny:
There are so many things wrong with your comment.
A) I’m two years older than you and have known who Janis Joplin was since I was in the 6th grade, so God only knows where you get your “information.” Everyone who knows anything about music knows her music. Or at least of her existence.
B) Where do you get off saying “none of us” (and by that I take it you mean 22 year olds) care? Is there some requirement that all movies need to have a green light based on the misguided opinion of a 22 year old nobody?
C) Do some research. Janis Joplin has had a greater influence on music than 90% of the musicians out there today. So fine, skip it and wait ten years for your Lady Gaga biopic to come out.
“…So fine, skip it and wait ten years for your Lady Gaga biopic to come out….”
Except that in ten years the twenty-somethings won’t know who Lady Gaga is, and the rest of us won’t care any more than we do now.
As to the topic at hand: It’s hard to think of a worse casting choice for the role. Don’t get me wrong, I love Amy Adams in just about everything I’ve seen her in — but nothing I’ve seen her in leads me to believe she could pull this off.
WTF? really? actually, you’re probably right. No one’s interested in hearing about one of the most influential women in the history of Rock and Roll. Silly me.
To Danny
Wow, you really got an education from all the comments relating to your remarks about JANIS JOPLIN. I only wish that you did know her.
There was and will never be a musician like Janis in your narrow minded, immature, ignorant, little kid, life time.
Tell me- Did you ever hear of Jimmy Hendricks, Woodstock, The Viet Nam War. Do you go to school yet? Can you read beyond comics on
action characters? Do your young self a favor DANNY boy- Think before you mouth off and speak for your entire 22 year old peers.
Peers???? I think you need to catch up a bit.
Sign up for a college, after you get your GED if you can. Talk to people. Listen to people because at this rate we will be making a lifetime movie about you called, “The 22 year old dummy”.
I wish you luck. Your going to need it.
Forgive my comments to you if you actually have an IQ of less then
60.
Actually, if you listen to Janis’s words you will learn alot.
She would actually just laugh out loud at your narrow mind.
She would throw back some Southern Comfort (look it up) and have herself a good laugh.
VGF
Danny go sit in a corner and think about what you’ve said.
Megan, that’s adorable.
I think you’re lying…you’re not 22, more like 12? Either you were lying or made a typo. I’m surprised you didn’t at least google her first before you commented.
Who is Janis Joplin?! Are you frickin’ serious? She was one of the best blues singers ever born!! Her music had soul, feeling and talent, unlike the vulgar noise adopted by your generation.
funny, I’m 15 and I know who she is. All of my classmates and friends can at least recognize one of her songs. I mean she was a drug addict and was a really out there person. I think my generation will watch this movie.
I’m 21 and I know who she is, she was a legend. Has nothing to do with age, sorry to be the one to tell you
Come on guys, give Danny a break. His comment is very understandable given that he was Mike Judge’s inspiration for Idiocracy
Sorry. My comment was to Danny.
Why reply you loser. Have you been living in a cave.
okay 22 yr old.. any one with good taste in music will be psyched to see this moive.. if you are so upset about it why dont u curl up and listen to your soulja boy or whatever crap u listen to in your “generation”
At this point it may just be piling it on, but kid, speak for yourself.
I’m twenty two and I know exactly who Janis Joplin is/was, and what her contributions to music were. She was an amazing person who led a fascinating life, and I will be in line for the first available showing if this movie gets released (though I don’t know how I feel about Amy Adams in the role).
Again, if you’re going to make stupid, immature, and dismissive comments about a veritable music legend, don’t drag the rest of our generation down with you.
One more to Danny & his “admirers” –
It’s really remarkable that anyone in their early 20′s is aware of singers who died 20 years before they were born. Isn’t that great? I doubt that any of us boomers at the time were into the music of Rudy Vallee (? – look it up!) or any of the other popular singers from 40 years before Janis.
Amy will kill, and Janis’ artistry will get more fans – even Danny.
Now, who’s going to play Hendrix?
Very unclassy statement to make. At 27 years old, I still couldn’t figure out up from down. By the time Janis was 27, she accomplished several lifetimes of legacy. Take the time to listen and see and feel the impact she has made. I still get goosebumps listening to her songs. I hope this movie is tastefully done; Janis deserves it.
You are such an idiot.
you need to be more cultured if you dont know who the hell janis joplin is. you must live in a damn bubble.
There’s nothing quite like this to illustrates being proud of their own ignorance.
Janis is a very talented musician wom brought together blues with rock so those of her generation where able to enjoy the classic artistic musical movements that the blues have impacted. No one has come close to her unique sound and I personally attribute her music (as well as others mind you) to the reason that blues is as wide known as it is today. If it wasn’t for musical pioneers like Janis Joplin I am afraid the talent of todays music would be worse than it is. You age and your generation has nothing to do with what you should know its your lack of self educating yourself on other generations music. I am only a few years older than you are; I feel if you search through some old school records you’d be pretty surprised, not too mention it would be a great time for you! Search around online and listen to some of those people that came before you and paved the way for the artists you know and love, you wont be disappointed!
Wow really? I’m 23 I would say I am right there in your generation and I know who Janis Joplin is. My friends all know who she is too. So I think your full of it you have probably heard of her and know who she is too. You probably just dont like her. I am pretty sure you have heard of Jimi Hendrix, one of the people she sang with at woodstock. She was one of the most iconic singer/song writers of her time. I could give two craps less if she was a drug addict and an alcholic! She was one of the most fantastic free souls of the 60′s and I would go see this movie. They made a movie about John Lennon why the hell not make one about Janis Joplin?
Well.. I am 19 years old. And I’ve listened to Janis Joplin. She is amazing no one compares to her now a days. I’ve Known about Joplin since I was 10. Thanks to my parents for Showing me real music. Maybe you should look her up. She was beautiful and her voice inspires people of all ages.
The most famous blues Rock and Roll artist in the world & 22nd years stupid Danny doesn’t know who Janis Joplin Pearl is?
It’s obvious he is self centered and Ignorant
Agree. Happy for the mention of P!nk’s positive screen test in this article
Anyone who has seen P!nk in concert SHREDDING on various Janis songs will agree that she has the voice & passion to do this. Amy Adams is a good actress, but she wont be able to sing Joplin, and lipsyncing wont cut it.
Go P!nk!
How about they go the Jennifer Hudson/Dreamgirls route and cast last season’s American Idol contestant Cyrstal Bowersox?
OMG FANTASTIC IDEA!
Amy Adams is a goodie two shoes & won’t delve into the character of Janis or Pearl.
Pink would be a good choice though she has stated on several occasions & in song she “can’t take direction.”
There is more to acting the lead part of Janis & of Janis as Pearl than singing her classic Rock.
I recommend myself to play the part of Janis & Janis as Pearl.
I have been singing Janis’s classic Rock since 1988.
I’ve had three Rock bands & I have had my own Productions business for twenty years.
I have lived Janis’s life as an in depth acting exercise living in hotels & motels & living every day of my life just like Janis did.
I’m Katherine Marsh I’m a famous actress & a published author.
The casting in “Get it While You Can” can only be because Amy Adams has been in the public eye in so many films.
Amy Adams hasn’t ever even covered Janis. Hasn’t ever met Janis,
hasn’t ever hitchhiked, and doesn’t have a spoon ring.
Amy Adams doesn’t even have the part in the middle of the hair.
I have been singing “Get it While You Can” since 1987. I’m a very good, skilled actress. I’m a former member of the Living Theatre and have worked as an actor on Broadway with the Living. I have had 3 Blues and Classic Rock and Roll bands of my own and have owned a Mercedes Benz. I am the right person/actress for the part of Janis. I have a Janis video I can send the Casting Director.
Sincerely,
Katherine Marsh
She sang quite well in Enchanted. But she’s gonna need serious voice lessons if she’s gonna pull off Janis Joplin. She’ll have to learn how to belt.
Uh, we already saw Amy Adams sing in Enchanted and at the Oscars, so we know that she can sing.
The problem is that Janis Joplin, while expressive, was a technically atrocious singer. I don’t want to see Adams do the same appalling damage to her voice that Joplin did to her own as a direct result of singing in a manner that is inherently damaging to the voice.
So I guess I really shouldn’t wish that Zooey Deschanel could get the part and yet, I do.
— Rob
Is Kristie Alley gonna play Mama Cass?
I wish Cass Elliot had lived that long. Now SHE was a talent.
Cathy Richardson (lead singer for the current Jefferson Airplane) has played Joplin on stage before and has the right voice/look.
Everyone already saw Beth Middler play a closely based role in The Rose. Adams has to beat that.
It will be hard to top Beth Middler’s performance.
Yeah right – there’s no way she’ll top Bette! I don’t agree with this casting choice at all… wow.
I LOVE Beth Midler. One of a kind. Named after Beth Davis. When Beth performed at Seizer’s Palace in Lost Vaygas it was magical. She’s better than Share. Wanna beth?
Burrrbank, you had me at Seizer’s Palace LOL!!!!!! I hope you get paid to write! ; )
Tamie I’m with you, Cathy Richardson, a Chicago based singer would be a much better choice….she has the pipes!!! She was absoultly wonderful in “Love Janis” All I can think about is how awful Janis felt about herself growing up because she was treated so badly by her peers in school…She is “Rocking and Rolling” over in her grave….
I was gonna say that at 35, Amy Adams is about eight years too old. Then I remembered that Janis Joplin looked like a sixty year old woman when died (at 27), so I think maybe Adams is too young.
Amy is the best choice! I think they have been looking to play Janis for a long time and just waiting for the right actress who not only can sing but can definitely act! And Amy it is!!
Well I suppose if Charlize Theron can play Aileen Wuronous, Amy Adams can play Joplin– i.e. a stretch..Deschanel is a more organic choice..also, Joplin was much younger than Adams; she was dead by 27, and Adams is already 35.. (but 20-somethings do play teens all the time) Joplin’s voice was raspy and raunchy, bluesy and raw..very tough to duplicate..anyway,definitely an out-of-the-box choice but she can act & Fernando Meirelles is a good filmmaker..so, it’ll be interesting!
yeah, because some criminal almost no one’s heard of is in anyway similar to one of the most famous and popular female performers of all time…
stop pretending she’s a good choice, people. she has no range, skill, looks, ANYTHING.
That’s great! Congratulations Amy! A chance for her to show her amazing vocals and I know she can also deliver! Amy you rock girl!
You’ve got to be kidding me?
Adams as Joplin?
When are they going to start finding the right actors/actresses for the roles
instead of these marketing gimmicks?
My thoughts exactly. You take little Miss Cute and cast her to play a boozy, howling blues singer who was voted ‘Ugliest Man on Campus’? It’s beyond ludicrous – it’s insulting.
Anyone who has seen seen Amy’s performance as the tough girlfriend of Mark Wahlberg’s Micky Ward in The Fighter should realize she can pull off this part. That’s why it’s called “acting”
You’re spot on. I’m an AA fan and this is ridiculous. It should be Pink or an unknown — JJ is about attitude and look, unless AA can really “go there”, I don’t see it.
So neither of you have heard of the “acting” process huh? So maybe Jamie Foxx shouldn’t have played Ray Charles (Oscar ahem!), or Joaquin Phoenix shouldn’t have played Johnny Cash (Oscar nom)? Adams is solid, you’ll agree, and she’ll pull it off.
That’s the challenge of the role, and what the audience can look foward to. Seriously why try to sell a big biopic as this with Pink or some unknown when you got a willing Oscar-nominated actress?
Amy Adams is a TERRIBLE choice for Joplin. For starters, AA is a soprano, and JJ an alto, not to mention how fundamentally different their voices are. And what, is AA gonna pack on 20-30 pounds to play it? I don’t think so! What happened to Zoey Daschanel?
Seriously – I agree with Mark11. I’m tired of movies always casting the prettiest face and not really even trying to get someone that is believable in the role.
Nothing against Amy Adams, but she’s like a non-anorexic version of Nicole Kidman and is not going to be believable on a motorcycle. Is she going to pack on about 30-40 pounds so she looks the part? Doubt it.
I’m just saying – are they marketing a concept or trying to tell a true-to life story? I’d rather see something true-to life.
They are gonna have to ugly Amy Adams the fugg up.
Like, seriously.
Amy definitely has the acting skills to pull off the role. And it doesn’t hurt that she resembles Janis (unlike Zooey). The voice will be difficult though. Still, I think it’s an interesting choice and will be an amazing part for Amy. Here’s hoping that this Janis project actually happens!
I can see the resemblance. =p
Amy Adams is far too pretty to be Janis Joplin. Amy Adams has a sweetnes too her and Joplin had a raw edge to her. I just don’t see it myself. In my opinion she was seriously miscast
Can’t wait to see the trailer. It would be huge if they could pull this off! Like Beverly Hills 90210′s HILARY SWANK in Boys Don’t Cry huge.
My first reaction? Love Adams, hate this idea. It’s certainly important for Adams, who needs to be careful re: typecasting, but playing icon Janis Joplin? Tall order.
I was super-excited back when PINK was in talks for the other JJ project. I could totally see that. Compared to that inspired idea casting Adams sounds like a total and rather risky joke. Pull a Swank, win an Oscar…
Adams is a terrific actress, but here she looks more like Ann-Margret than Joplin.
Smartest post in this thread.
Love Amy. Adams but this would be moot acting on her part. I don’t know if she can pull it off. Pink maybe could do the singing – but canshe act . I saw Janis when I was a kid – amazing talent – tough shoes to fill
obtaining the rights, not the actress, has been the real problem
This is the only meaningful entry among these responses, and I bet we both know the director who tried for years to untangle them.
Great point re: the rights. It’s the same scenario for the Marvin Gaye and Jimi Hendrix bio films that are still trying to come to fruition. It’s the rights, not the lack of casting choices. Not sure what the status of the Rick James bio is but am so glad that Dave Chappelle won’t be playing Rick. It was excellent for parody, but the real Rick was a meaty lothario (pre-crack). Hope someone makes the Janis film soon- 40 years is too long and she is AMAZING.
In response to MARK11, I hardly think casting Amy Adams as Janis Joplin is a marketing gimmick. She is a brilliant actress with terrific range. You have every right to criticize her performance ONCE SHE GIVES IT. Until then, a simple ‘Congratulations, Amy, and best wishes’ will suffice.
Um did you not see Leap Year? I love Amy Adams, but that was pretty terrible.
Joplin was not a very pretty women and to portrait he as such is probably the opposite of the truth. Joplin’s real and charisma was the flame. This is the lesson lost today where these items take second place to the image of content.
If Amy Adams is going to pull off matching Joplin’s voice, she either needs to start an all Sandpaper diet or get acquainted with the Marlboro Man. She’s too sweet voiced for the part.
I would have liked to see P!nk, Crystal Bowersox, or Allison Iraheta get the part. Crystal resembles her in look and voice but she it too new for something like this. Allison gave an excellent performance of Crybaby on American Idol but is too ethnic to play her, I would say P!nk is the best choice.
Amy is extremely talented. We box our actors too frequently into certain types and categories. I think Amy is going to blow it out of the water and impress everyone by showing another side of her talent and range. When I heard about this project my first thought was, “Ingenious.”
And no, I don’t represent her. Just a writer.
