Today the website Fearnet had an interview with film producer Wyck Godfrey about the Twilight Saga, and the subject of a long-in-the-works Janis Joplin biopic came up. Godfrey mentioned in passing that Amy Adams would play the 1960s singer. I can tell you that Amy is indeed confirmed in the role for the film to be directed by Fernando Meirelles (City Of God). There’s no studio involved yet, and the script has been through several drafts. Many have tried and failed to get a Janis Joplin biopic off the ground. I recall Pink delivered an impressive screen-test for Penelope Spheeris on an earlier and different Joplin project.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

What? Jessica Simpson wasn’t available?
I mean, talk about casting.
Casting aside the very notion that casting matters.
Amy seems a very good, capable actress but maybe more suited to sweet, perhaps because that’s all we’ve seen her do. I’m highly sceptical, but you go girl!
Was sorta hoping Schuyler Fisk would do this – an accomplished singer actress who with a little help might look more like her than the etherel Adams.
They really should have picked Jane Krakowski, whose character in 30 Rock already practiced for the role in a movie “loosely based” on her life, as Jackie Jormp-Jomp, because they couldn’t get the rights.
Does anyone, other than 30 Rock devotees, really want to see a Janis Joplin biopic? This material is long expired. No one cares.
Ugh. Can’t stand Amy Adams. So many better actresses that are less annoying.
I love Amy Adams but….dear lord, no.
Pink, please.
I can’t even fathom Amy Adams as Janis Joplin. I just can’t see it. No doubt she will NOT be singing but going the lip sync route, because there is NO way she’d ever approach sounding like Joplin in a million years with a million voice lessons.
Oh yeah, I see the resemblance.
Since when does an ACTRESS have to actually sing in a movie? The filmmakers got it right with “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” by hiring a talented ACTRESS to ACT the part of a singer while having them lip sync to the songs.
I think the choice of Amy Adams is perfect. She’s one of the few truly exceptional, young American actresses. She’s staring in a MOVIE, not a CONCERT.
This wrongheaded notion that only singers can play singers is exactly why genuine, trained black actresses are losing out on roles to singers like Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce.
Let’s let the actors act and the singers sing.
Thank you. I commented above with Jamie Foxx and Joaquin Phoenix and TOTALLY forgot Angela Bassett (another Oscar nom hello!) I should’ve read through this thread with yours and “Peter Hedges.”
Let’s get some sense here. Amy Adams would pique interest to the story and totally make the film marketable. What is up with the Pink devotees on this thread?!
Let the actors act, doggone it!
“Since when does an ACTRESS need to Sing?”
Nobody’s saying she HAS TO sing…but if she’s in the market for a certain Gold Statuette, pulling Double Duty is a Major Plus in the eyes of the Academy (Not 100% of the time, but more often than not).
I love Amy Adams, but as Joplin? Very, very weird casting. I hope I’m wrong, but to me this just spells disaster.
See if she can act and if she can, hire Grace Potter !!!
Besides casting, how about answering some of the bigger questions like: Who the hell is the audience? Teens don’t know who Janis is and the baby boomers are too tired to go out to see this. My guess is it will go nowhere.
Look at THE RUNAWAYS. Kristen Stewart couldn’t even get them into the theatres. Joan who???
good point.
Pink.
She’s a talent and I’m sure she will do a good job. But – lets hope she doesn’t go and put on tons of weight for the role. I’d hate to see Amy get all fat and nasty just for a role.
If this girl (Amy Adams) sings like Bette Midler, then you got something. Remember “The Rose” back in ’79? That was a great movie. Also, Bette Midler portrayed the late Janis Joplin quite well. Let’s hope that Amy can do the same.
Dana Fuchs would be great for this, if you don’t know who she is, look her up.
This could be cool, but I’m bummed it never happened with Zooey Deschanel in the part.
I heard Pink’s screen test when she sang as Janis and it was incredible–spot on. I think Pink has the grit and life experience and would play an incredible Joplin.
Well, if Kate Blanchett can do Dylan,?, maybe Amy can do Joplin. I’m just saying.
Not sure her baby voice will work at all…
She could surprise us all but I can’t picture it just yet.
As a soul singer who suffered from addiction and the gluttonous void that appears as passion like Janis. This is the wrong choice. Janis and the people I know well that knew her are outraged. Amy Adams is a remarkable actress, but this part is more fit for a relentless rebel with nothing left but unreasonable hope, not to mention a power greater than themselves so deep within them that it can only be vocalized through music. Why cast anyone other than that. And dont give me that bullshit line “it needs a star.” Surround that goddess with supporting roles as stars and if it’s undeniable it will be a classic. But for God’s sake dont just cast it with today’s current average leading lady and hope for the best, not for Janis. This has to be re-thought, NOW!!! Sorry Amy it’s not personal loved you in “Junebug” your great but you cant sing like Janis and there are many out there who can, so why get greedy. You could play Grace Kelley or maybe Joni Michelle. She was friends with Janis. —Anonymous.
Dana Fuchs definitely has the Joplin vocal chops (without the histrionics) and has played her off-broadway. But who wants to make a true-life Janis Joplin movie? She was fat and ugly, by all accounts obnoxious and potty-mouthed, and obsessed with sex and drugs. There’s no way to make a mass-market movie out of that.
Jimi Hendrix could be played by Zac Efron.
Crystal Bowersox would have been a more interesting choice.
strange choice. but its still better than lindsay lohan which i read as a rumor a few months ago.
