EXCLUSIVE: An adaptation of the hit British series Spooks aka MI-5 is headed to American television via ABC. ABC Studios has closed a deal for the rights to Spooks, known in the U.S. as MI-5, with Kudos Rights LTD, a division of the Shine Group-owned British production company Kudos Film and Television which produces the BAFTA-winning original series. Michael Seitzman has been tapped to write and executive produce the adaptation, which has received a script order from ABC. But I hear it’s still to be determined if the spooks will be American or British.
Spooks, created by David Wolstencroft, follows the work of a group of MI5 officers based at the service’s Thames House headquarters in highly secure offices known as The Grid. The spy drama, one of the U.K.’s top series of this decade, launched in 2002, with a new season scheduled to premiere this fall. Spooks also has become one of the most recognizable British series in the U.S. in a long while. Under the title MI-5, it has aired in the U.S. on A&E, BBC America and PBS. Another top British drama series, which is well known in the U.S., Torchwood, is getting a U.S. reboot at Starz, which is co-producing the upcoming installment of the Doctor Who spinoff.
MI-5 does not fall under Seitzman’s overall deal at ABC Studios. He had 2 projects for the studio that went to pilot last year, Empire State and House Rules. On the feature side, the WME-repped Seitzman penned the 2005 film North Country.

If they cast Richard Armitage in the US version as well – I’m on board.
Just the most ridiculous idea I have heard since NBC tried to relocate Coupling.
Please just give me more episodes of Spooks from BBC One.
It might go to pilot, but it won’t go past that.
I wonder why it is not called Spookes in the US, Oh My’ poor
old pc US.
Michael Seitzman rocks! He’s going to crush it.
Is Mark Gordon producing?
I don’t see ABC/Disney being able to do Spooks justice–It took me 2 episodes of the first season to decide that Spooks was way too hardcore for American audiences–I am not going to give away what happens to a prominent character in the second episode, but I guarantee that we will not see this happen on ABC.
Ohhh Nooo! This is so wrong. Look at what happened with Life on Mars, State of Play, Edge of Darkness – They were all totally crushed!
American TV couldn’t even show the original program with it’s real name, but had to change it to MI-5. All of the edgy, timely plots will be gone. It will be the same old garbage with commercials that I refuse to watch now. Spooks is really an ensemble piece, in fact there are no credits. It doesn’t make any difference who the top agents are from year to year, because the scripts and production are tops and what keeps viewers coming back internationally!
Season 9 of Spooks is in the can and broadcasting this fall – I’ll be watching..Season 10 is planned for next year…count me in. But another crummy remake of a great British show, I don’t think so.
Screw remake. Go spin-off: Tom and Zoe hired as “consultants” for Homeland Security.
Spooks jumped the shark in series 6;it`s been poor for a long time;recycled, silly plots and wooden acting. Not surprised that Hermione Norris wanted out;she was the only good thing about the show. The Lucas character is a sad-sack wimp, played by the easter Island statue that is Richard Armitage.
Agreed. Season 6 was the apogee of the show (implausable casket scene notwithstanding). Season 7 was disappointing: I’m sure Richard (“sotto voce”) Armitage is a very nice man, but “Lucas” is a dud. The entire season 7 felt contrived. Poor Hermonie Norris was totally wasted in that season (in season 8 as well, to tell the truth). I don’t blame her for decamping to better material. Shame. What a missed opportunity.
I agree that series 6 was one of the weakest, but the show picked up in series 7 and continues to be wonderful.
If ABC actually does this, it’s a sad, sad day.
Just look what happened to the American remake of PRIME SUSPECT — uh, never saw it after they made the pilot? My point exactly.
A US version will never live up to the quality of the British series and being a Spooks fan, I would refuse to watch it. Why not get licensing rights to the current series instead? (Hollywood, hello? The Brits are in the process of filming the next season).
Another bad idea!!! Why do American Broadcasters have to usurp British ideas all the time?? Rarely are they successful in matching the quality of the original (unless it is a reality show – many of these originated in the U.K. as well). I wish they would stop and generate their own ideas. There are many British television shows that are innovative and creative. As a result, American broadcasters who try to copy them clearly play second fiddle to their British counterparts.
However, there is some truth to the idea that a large segment of the American population would not like the British version of MI-5 which is quite cerebral. So show the American thinking audience the originals and leave the trite reality shows for the rest. At least British television tries to cater to both audiences.
Apparently Kudos doesn’t care if the Americans ruin it…they took the money, didn’t they?
As Obama said “It’s an outrage”!!
Spooks is one of the best written and cunning spy shows ever. ABC will ruin it like Life on Mars!!
Its not the same thing as 24 so comparisons are not fair.
The next series for Spooks is coming back soon too.
The photo accompanying the story is from the 2006 season–the blonde actor is no longer with the show. The current star of Spooks, Richard Armitage, joined the cast in 2007 and is currently filming his third series – Spooks 9. ABC’s show would only maintain my interest if they keep Mr Armitage as the star – he’s a superb actor with spectacular eye appeal. ABC would be foolish to not keep the Brit in the leading role of Lucas North.
Love MI-5 on BBC. But when will American TV realize that BritTV does not need to be DUMBED DOWN for American audiences. Loved “Coupling” on BBC-own the DVDs, but couldn’t watch even the whole first episode on American TV. Let’s hope that ABC gets the message to make this show the way it needs to be made.
I, too, have been so disappointed that BBCA/PBS didn’t pick up Spooks after the first two seasons, so I bought the DVDs and have enjoyed the series since then. Richard Armitage is definitely an actor the US public would enjoy seeing, but I really can’t see this program translating at all into a successful series here. Imagine, if you will, very educated characters who toss off classical literary references after solving the latest terrorist plot. The Brits have that background, appreciate it and aren’t afraid to show their appreciation. We in the New World are much more enamored with replicating the next great thing in the hopes that the mere act of duplication will create a success; alas, more often that not, it’s counterfeit. And ABC? Really? Even FOX would have done a better job at adapting, but HBO/SHO would have been ideal. No, ideal would be simply airing the series here. I’ve always enjoyed its unsettling nature, with scripts based more in complicated reality, versus our “ripped from the [salacious] headlines” approach. It’s not for everyone, but I’m sure ABC will do its best to correct that and develop yet one more forgettable series.
We are avid fans of BBC’s Spooks series and can’t get enough of this fabulous produced and directed show, so much class and leaves you in awe awaiting for the next Series 9. Why bother going to America and spoiling what we have been used to this great show. We are sick of some sick American TV and are so much looking forward to brilliant performances like Spooks as previous series. Hope nothing changes. From Australian Fans of Spooks!!!
I love MI5 and waited all summer for the new season on Detroit’s PBS to see if Jo was dead in Adam’s arms or just out cold as the rescue team arrived. But no, they started over with Tom (not sure which season). An American version? Stupid. Just show the amazing original on network TV–dump one (or all) of those obnoxious “reality” shows.
MI-5 is one of the best suspense oriented shows, right on the mark to what is going on in the world today. You are on the edge of your seat never knowing who will survive another day – true reality TV – and only the British can make it work! Cannot wait for Vol 8 and 9 to be available on Netflix, don’t get cable. There is no way that American TV can make this work they don’t know how to kill off their leads, nobody dies if they have a key roll in American TV. What a waste but guess it still comes down the the $$$ shame on the British for selling out. There is nothing like a good British detective show or spy thriller you go Brits!
This could be done well, though I doubt that it it will. With the exception of the overtly anti American season 6, original scripts could be modified for location and subsequent historical developments. The key would be to maintain the character’s characters. Keep their back stories and don’t just put 5 shallow stereotypes like is usually done on US TV. Doing that could make for a quality show. Would Americans, with our need for simple instant gratification watch? I doubt it.
The Brits know how to produce the finest.
Nothing like a Yank to screw it up.
Wouldn’t touch adapted version.
Say this isn’t true??? I am dying for the new season to start, (I watch it on public television)and the main reason it is so fantastic is because it British. I am an American and I agree with everyone who has stated that it will be ruined if ABC buys it. I did not see the American version of “Life on Mars”, only the British, which was great. I’m dumbfounded, please say it not true.
This drama, MI5, plays on our PBS outlet at 11PM on Saturday evening. I just discovered it last year but usually fell asleep before the end of it. Since I love any British TV, I started taping it and watching it later. I have only watched two seasons but am going to rent the others. I told my son about it and he now watches and we discuss it during the week. It has become our favorite show. I agree with all the comments, American TV producers cannot possibly handle a show of this quality. We just saw Adam’s demise and it hurts but look forward to the Lucas character as well as more of Ross and Jo. Harry is the best and there is no way he can be duplicated by an American actor. Anyway this is totally a British show and should remain so.
Harry is the hottest grandpa on TV.
NO NO NO NO! It’ll go pear-shaped. Even I know that, and I’m in Texas. And, yes, at least this American would be interested in a show about the British Security Services, but it’s already been done, superbly. I won’t watch it.
I absolutely love the show, the British got the best drama and music… for sure.
Maybe it is time for the Americans to re-write history as we speak, the CIA & FBI are usually portrayed as traitors and the ones plotting War World III.
Let’s see the other side of the coin..
