EXCLUSIVE: I hear a new take on the 1970s comedic action drama CHiPs is in the works at Warner Bros Television. Numbers creators Nicolas Falacci and Cheryl Heuton are writing/exec producing, and Topher Grace would exec produce the reboot with his partner at Sargent Hall Prods Gordon Kaywin. Topher will not be starring. Deals are still being finalized, and the project has not been taken out to the networks yet. But I bet it will spark solid interest given the heat that the revamp of another 1970s action procedural, CBS’ new series Hawaii Five-0, has been garnering going into fall.
WBTV first tried mounting a remake of CHiPs 8 years ago with Doug Liman and Dave Bartis producing. The project, which didn’t go to pilot, was set up at NBC, with two scripts developed, one by Natalie Chaidez, and another by Martin Kunert and Eric Manes. Warner Bros, which owns the rights to the original series, also has been trying to get a feature remake of CHiPs off the ground. The project was put in development in 2005 with Grace’s That ’70s Show co-star Wilmer Valderrama attached to play Ponch. Meanwhile, Grace and Kaywin developed another reboot last season, a contemporary take on the 1985 movie St. Elmo’s Fire, which was set up at ABC via Sony TV and studio-based producer Jamie Tarses.
The original CHiPs, which ran on NBC from 1977 to 1983, was created by Rick Rosner and followed the lives of two motorcycle police officers of the California Highway Patrol, macho, rambunctious Officer Francis “Ponch” Poncherello (Erik Estrada) and his straight-laced partner, Officer Jonathan “Jon” Baker (Larry Wilcox).

OMFG!!!!!!!!!! Why can’t they let sleeping dogs lie? I was one of many victims in the 70′s of this testosterone ride and I’m still puking up body hair—NO! This is a big mistake!
I totally agree, Hollywood can’t think of anything on their own without remaking old movies and series.
“The Horror… The Horror…”
Could there be a better new Ponch and John than Topher and Wilmer? Anything more serious than that would be a bummer.
NUMBERS wasn’t exactly the most entertaining show on earth, so the notion of its producer attempting comedy says it all.
this just proves even old shows like Chips never die sooner or later they get remade. though one would think after the remake of bionic woman and knight rider bombed. the networks would leave certain things alone.
What’s next, a “Sheriff Lobo” reboot? Seriously, TV needs to stop pillaging its’ own past for new projects and start developing actual new projects!
So do the movies.
we can only hope it doesn’t sell.ha.
the obsession with returning to old shows is pathetic. The town is full of so many talented writers with original ideas..& this is what they come up with..CHIPS ?????? That and spinoffs– L&O 5, two NCIS’s, two Criminal Minds, three CSI’s. sigh.I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery in Hollywood:-(
Didn’t anyone learn anything from the re-boot of Bionic Woman?? Who greenlights this shit?? I’d rather watch Jersey Shore!
It seems most viewers agree, hence the success of the Housewives, Jersey Shore, etc and the death of Knight Rider, Bionic Woman…
TV execs need to wise up! No one cares about this shit.
TV and the movies. So many hacks, so little talent.
STOP doing reboots!
Topher probably thinks he’s a freakin’ genius for coming up with the idea to remake a 70s TV show.
And U wonder why Jersey Shore does so well? At least THAT’S AN ORIGINAL THOUGHT!
Original thoughts are frowned upon in Hollywood, just like the ability to fail upwards, crap begets more crap!
The best shows in the 70′s were these type of action/comedies. CHIPS, Magnum PI, Remington Steel, Charlie’s Angels, Rockford Files, etc. Why not just bring back the action/comedy genre with original ideas instead of re-makes?
rebooting another 70s tv show, quality idea.
yeah, but you gotta admit … CHiPs was an awesome show!
I didn’t realize the original series was a “comedic action drama.” Was it intentionally funny?
Why don’t they just release the Original Seasons 3-7 on DVD? They don’t exist! Don’t mess with cheesey perfection!
Haters stop hating. My show had the best opening theme music in the history of TV and what about that Skate with the Stars roller-disco episode we did in 1979 you won’t ever see anything as great as this with Leif Garrett and a hundred other big TV stars.

I wasn’t aware that there was another young Latin male in Hollywood other than Wilmer Valderamma. Who else could they possibly cast?
Don’t reboot this, just give it the boot.
Judging from the comments you are all assuming that the new show will be just an updated story of John and Ponch. But what if they do a Battle Star Galatica approach to the basic idea of the men and women of the CHP? Gritty, down and dirty like The Shield or Southland. Follow a rookie cop and the veterans who will show him the way. Motorcycle / car chases, gang violence, outlaw bikers, bank robbers, etc. CHP covers the entire state and does a lot more than just traffic. You name it, the CHiPs could run into it.
Done right, they could have something special.
Those oh so talented network development executives. There’s no end to their talent. LoLoL
This is going to be a great show- people do not realize the extent to which the CHP has juridiction and all the really amazing ways they do things as well as the high tech equipment they use that was not even invented 30+ years ago.
Brilliant idea for a remake – there will be a lot of forensics about cars, trucks, motorcycles etc.
I cannot wait for the series
Where are NBC’s B.J. and The Bear or the Rip Tide detective agency? Ha Ha….. So fricken comical. With all the productions being shot outside California – maybe they’ll take Chips to Louisiana and give it some Smokey and The Bandit elements….. LOL!!! They can go sun bathing on the Bayou…..
Has Hollywood learned nothing from the numerous attempts to turn television shows into movies? Especially ones from the 1970s and 1980s?!
Sure it worked with “Mission Impossible” and arguably with “The Fugitive” but it didn’t work with “Miami Vice”, “Mob Squad” and most recently with “The A-Team”.
Besides a few weeks ago leading up to the release of “Incpetion” wasn’t the Internet chock-a-block with posts about how Hollywood studios were regaining their interest in original content?
Okay, guess I should have not just skimmed the post. Somehow I thought WB wanted to head to the movies with ChiPs. Even so, not sure the idea would work on television either.
