EXCLUSIVE: I hear a new take on the 1970s comedic action drama CHiPs is in the works at Warner Bros Television. Numbers creators Nicolas Falacci and Cheryl Heuton are writing/exec producing, and Topher Grace would exec produce the reboot with his partner at Sargent Hall Prods Gordon Kaywin. Topher will not be starring. Deals are still being finalized, and the project has not been taken out to the networks yet. But I bet it will spark solid interest given the heat that the revamp of another 1970s action procedural, CBS’ new series Hawaii Five-0, has been garnering going into fall.
WBTV first tried mounting a remake of CHiPs 8 years ago with Doug Liman and Dave Bartis producing. The project, which didn’t go to pilot, was set up at NBC, with two scripts developed, one by Natalie Chaidez, and another by Martin Kunert and Eric Manes. Warner Bros, which owns the rights to the original series, also has been trying to get a feature remake of CHiPs off the ground. The project was put in development in 2005 with Grace’s That ’70s Show co-star Wilmer Valderrama attached to play Ponch. Meanwhile, Grace and Kaywin developed another reboot last season, a contemporary take on the 1985 movie St. Elmo’s Fire, which was set up at ABC via Sony TV and studio-based producer Jamie Tarses.
The original CHiPs, which ran on NBC from 1977 to 1983, was created by Rick Rosner and followed the lives of two motorcycle police officers of the California Highway Patrol, macho, rambunctious Officer Francis “Ponch” Poncherello (Erik Estrada) and his straight-laced partner, Officer Jonathan “Jon” Baker (Larry Wilcox).

HAVE YOU ALL SEEN WHAT THE HELL THESE MEN LOOK LIKE NOW???
LOTS WRINKLES AND POCHED OUT STOMACH–NO HAIR OR ALMOST GONE-(HAS ANYONE SEEN FONZIE AND OPIE—-DAMN SCARRY!!
THEY WERE GREAT IN THAT TIME —THERE IS A TIME IN TIME TO LEAVE THOSE GREAT SHOW’S ALONE—REDO’S ARE NEVER AS GOOD AS THE WAY THEY
FIRST TIME AROUND—EXAMPLE THE REDO OF DUKES OF HAZARD AND STARKEY AND HUTCH IN 2004—NONE OF THEM DID A GREAT LIKE OUR ORIGINAL’S—–MY VOTE NO REDO’S
A great show for its time*, but the time has passed and the world has moved on. I agree: turn that show biz talent in the direction of fresh, contemporary interests (like “Housewives of New Jersey”!).
*Brilliant semi-disco theme music and California-cool hair styles.
Another proof that so many of us fondly look back to days when this world was not as ugly, terrorism was unheard of, stress was much less, the economy was better, and music, movies, and TV were FABULOUS!! If they choose to bring back CHiPs, I would be first in line to see it, especially if Erik returns. Oh, those memories. Retro is big, like it or not. Wish I had a time machine.
Well all right! I loved CHiPs! I loved Numb3rs! I am so jazzed to see that the twain shall meet!
How about this. Chips goes to rural Georgia/Tennessee and the motor officers play the part of Luke and Bo Duke, only this time it’s the short fat sheriff that does the gorge jumping in his white Cadillac convertible while trying to get away from the straight laced bike cops. Then in twenty years they can round up all the classis Caddy ragtops they can find so they can destroy them in the major motion picture they make about the TV series,,,just like they did with Ford Torinos for Starsky and Hutch-the movie.
Let’s call Baretta, he will resolv it !!
Oh, joy. I think a good indicator of how this show will end up can be seen in the hell that another Topher Grace/Gordon “Nightmare” Kaywin property has gone through the last few years; “Kids in America”. It is a stinker. And that sort of rot starts from the top and rolls downhill.
Anyone who thinks that they will do a serious approach to “CHiPs” doesn’t fully understand why they want to do perform CPR on this concept with Wilmer “Handy Manny” Valderama and Topher G. At best this is a low-tier USA-type show, at worst, it dies a silent death after going to pilot.
I think its a great idea. Numb3rs was a Great show. So how can this remake not be great with the founders be hind it.
I aslo agree with being sick of remakes. But sometimes the remakes are better then the frist time. If remakes weren’t done then how would the younger people see what us older people have seen ( I’m in my 30s so I’m not that old ) I want to atleast see it. I mean John left what the last two or so seasons to a new kid and his brother. The saying don’t knock something untl you try it goes for swwing it to.
Well! If you all can’t get a grip on remakes and tailspins then get your nose off the t.v. I would rather my daughter watch CHiPs than watch family guy or any of the filth they put on television now. GROW UP and let Hollywood do what they do and you pay attention to what you can do not what you think you can do. CHiPs is a great t.v show and if I had my way about it it would be on prime time.
The CHiPs 99 reunion movie was suppose to be a pilot movie for a revival of the show, the original actors reprised their roles and adding younger actors and new characters to the show. That was a excellent concept and was true to the orginal show. Make a new movie tv pilot with the original stars and introduce a younger band of CHP officers into the mix. It was suppose to be for TNT, they are doing it for DALLAS, why not CHiPs.
No no, Stop, first things first,
the original chips was for many kids just like me a good show,
i have seen chips’99, and yes, that was fun, but not good!!!
I think you need to watch the remake so you can judge!
If you don’t want to look at it, alright,… use your remote controle or just don’t watch,
final, the original serie was good for that time and those kids!

Please, Please, Please….release the restof the show on dvd. It didn’t hurt the new Hawaii Five-O, it won’t hurt CHiPs.
Rick Rosner had producer a number of his programming for ABC, NBC and CBS through the years – among them 240-Robert and Caesars Challenge.
