EXCLUSIVE: Screenwriter Jeremy Garelick has closed two deals. He’ll adapt for 20th Century Fox the Jane Heller novel An Ex To Grind as a star vehicle for Cameron Diaz and Benicio Del Toro. Garelick has separately been signed by Universal Pictures to direct Hassle Man, a comedy that will be written by Eli Jorne and Reed Agnew
Garelick, who cowrote The Break-Up and did uncredited rewrite work for Todd Phillips on The Hangover, has been gearing himself to direct since he was Joel Schumacher’s assistant and directed second unit on Veronica Guerin. Making the leap from scribe to director isn’t easy, and Garelick helped his own cause by spending $25,000 and calling in every favor he could to film a six-minute scene from The Pretender, a script he set up at Universal.
“I was sitting on the set of The Hangover, watching that happen when I thought, why not show Universal I can direct,” Garelick said. “I’d been involved in six movies from start to finish, worked with Joel on four films and learned from Peyton Reed on The Break-Up, Todd Phillips on The Hangover, and I saw what to do.” He got Hot Tub Time Machine‘s Craig Robinson, The Hangover‘s Ken Jeong, Paula Patton and Jonathan Goldsmith, the latter of whom is better known as “the most interesting man in the world” in the Dos Equis beer commercials. They spent a day shooting at a boxing ring. While Garelick has been attached as director to another script he’s writing, the scene got him hired for the first time as director only. Said Garelick: “It got the attention of Universal, and made possible Hassle Man, whose logline is, `when you can’t hire a hit man, hired a hassle man.’” The film’s produced by George Nolfi, Scarlett Lacey and Michael Hackett.
The question is, which film will Garelick direct first? Garelick hopes to direct The Pretender, and he is also attached to direct The Insane Laws, which he sold as a pitch to Sony Pictures Entertainment. UTA and Principato/Young rep him.

Go Jeremy! Can’t wait for the BDT / Cameron-cool to see Benicio in comic robes with a real writer who will hopefully give us something a little more smart and nuanced aka Break-Up and Hangover (and Nolan has shown intelligent films CAN connect with audiences– as long as they are good!)
Very cool… whatever happened to the guy he wrote Golden Tux and the Break Up with? Jay Lavender… is that dude still in the picture?
One of the most stand-up guys in the business. Great writer! Can’t wait to see him start directing.
I’m sure all the directing tips he picked up as Schumacher’s assistant will come in handy.
Only work on projects with title puns? Just curious.
Isn’t that all movies are nowadays? Titles with puns?
I quite enjoyed Golden Tux. It was one of those big spec sales that never gets made and probably rightfully so. But now it will end up getting made.
Congrats Jason. Congrats.
Thank you.
FANTASTIC! Way to go, Jeremy! Good luck
I love it when the good guys win!
Way to go, Jeremy!
Nice to Jeremy bounce back — and bounce back large — after the “Hangover” writer-credit fiasco. He totally deserved a onscreen credit for that movie. Can’t believe the WGA didn’t give it to him.
My understanding, though, is that industry insiders know he saved that script more than ever. Now it is heartening to see his success mushroom (and publicly acknowledged this time!)
So who says Hollywood is heartless all the time? Go, Jeremy go!
The guy is a class act. I met him during TIGERLAND and well all knew big things were ahead for him back then. Congrats JG!!j
BARNES
All of a sudden somebody woke up in Hollywood… it was about time JG got his chance to direct. He’ll be great. Bravo.
Great job Jeremy!
A class act with a genius sense of humor! I’m sure these films will be great just like the rest of his work.
Jeremy- that is wonderful news…glad your holiwood star is rising, and directing is now in your future! We are thrilled for you..
