EXCLUSIVE: Francis Ford Coppola has been working for 30 years to turn Jack Kerouac’s seminal Beat Generation novel On the Road into a movie. It is starting to look like it was worth the wait. Amy Adams and Viggo Mortensen are joining the Walter Salles-directed adaptation that will begin this month, I’m told. She will play Jane, the emotionally damaged junkie mother of two children and the wife of Old Bull Lee. Mortensen is going to play Lee. Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley and Tron: Legacy‘s Garrett Hedlund are also set for the pic. Script’s by Jose Rivera, who teamed with Salles on The Motorcycle Diaries. Coppola and Rebecca Yeldham are producing. The film began production today.
Adams, who next stars opposite Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in the David O. Russell-directed The Fighter, will follow On The Road by treading on more hallowed 60s ground. She’s attached to play songstress Janis Joplin in a film to be directed by City Of God helmer Fernando Mierelles that could happen next year. Mortensen just wrapped the role of Sigmund Freud in the David Cronenberg-directed A Dangerous Method.

Viggo in “The Road” and “On The Road”? Expect mass confusion at the video store! (they still have those, right?)
I’m very excited about this movie. Hopefully they take it to Cannes 2011. I hope this turns out to be another Coppola masterpiece. I know Walter Salles keeps
I’m dubious about the film. I really don’t think Adams and Mortensen are a good mix but maybe the other actors might help them film. Eh…
yesss-viggo as bull lee is inspired! Amy Adams? hm…..I’ll reserve judgement until I see it. I still think casting her as janis is insane though.
Amy Adams as Janis Joplin? Who is making these casting decisions and what drugs are they on? And where can I get some?
No, it’s not Christian Bale. I’m extremely excited about this movie. The book is very famous and a long-time selling list. Can’t wait to see it debut at Cannes.
OH! ViGGO my argentino! This is too big! Amy
Adams is a sweetheart.. Love it
OH…..Viggo….another great addition…gets better all the time……love Kristen Stewart!! Cannot wait to see this!!!
And for those who haven’t read the novel, Old Bull Lee in real life was none other than William S. Burroughs. This will be a great role for Viggo Mortensen as Burroughs was one dark soul.
Well, it’s a iconic novel and never attempted before…and with this group of actors…I just don’t know. Lets read the Script first.
Mortensen as Lee (Burroughs) is a brilliant choice.
But the most important question: Who’s playing Kerouac (Sal Paradise)?
this is a great cast, male wise, not so sure about the two K’s. I wouldn’t underestimate Amy Adams. I think she’s shown that she’s a character actress and a very good one. Now will Kristen do something other than glum? Love Riley and Hedlund, that’s a real score….
Richard T. Russano – Quite fascinating too considering Viggo’s directing buddy David Cronenberg of course adapted Burrough’s NAKED LUNCH.
A book everyone should read in their teens or early 20′s. But not really a book that would make a compelling movie.
stop making this film to be an anthem of teenage life in the late 40′s because none of you online freaks would know anything about that time. reading the censored book doesn’t give you any insight into that era. it was a time to be experienced and not to judge. let the film happen. like jack would have wanted.
I never had any doubts that Viggo would end up being in this movie and playing that exact part. For years I was sure of that, even before Walter Salles was hired to direct the movie. It’s so funny to read about it.
And I don’t know why people are so upset about Amy Adams. She’s a wonderful actress who can do lots of different things. I think it will be great. They’ll probably still the show!
whoever is playing neal cassady better have a hell of a lot of energy
Why the hell they got Amy Adams ? This movie’s gonna be maybe fantastic but her presence there… uhhh.
