I hear that the Sony Pictures brass just saw The Tourist starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp and decided it’s a big commercial thriller that’s going to play great during the holiday season on December 10th. That weekend Paramount’s David O Russell film The Fighter starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg is scheduled as well as Fox/Walden’s The Chronicles of Narnia 3: The Voyage of the Dawn. All sound very very different. Produced by Graham King and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, The Tourist is already eagerly anticipated around the world since it was paralyzing Venice and those parts of Italy where it was filming.

This is terrific news! There is a lot of positive buzz surrounding this film and, for the sake of Sony Pictures, I hope it plays great throughout the holiday season (and not just on December 10th!). ; )
I’ll go see it for Depp, not for Jolie. Depp’s worth the wait for the holidays.

What’s better than Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in “The Tourist”?…THE FIGHTER, that’s what. It is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life. The Fighter is brilliant. I can’t wait to see “The Tourist” as well but THE FIGHTER is in a class all by itself.

Why December 10th, that is such a horrible weekend, especially if they want it to play throughout the holiday season, movies that come out earlier lose screens. And they really have to go head to head to head?

The Fighter should be pretty good as well
The Fighter will win the Dec 10th wknd. From 2004 to 2008 Interscope Geffen A&M and Eminem’s Shady Records had a first look deal at Paramount (Get Rich or Die Tryin). I heard from a studio exec that their young Dir of Dev at the time found The Fighter which was a docu pitch at the time set to Eminem’s “Lose Yourself,” and presented it to Eminem who was on tour in various cities during this time. Eminem loved it, and attached himself to the role of Irish Mickey Ward. The first draft was written for Eminem, but the studio went around Eminem and his production company after Em had passed on a few in house projects at Paramount. In turn, Brad Weston gave the role to Wahlberg. It would have been Eminem’s Rocky, and a great movie for him. Maybe even a 2nd, or 3rd Academy Award because the new song “Not Afraid” would have been the theme song. Im sure Walhberg will kill it, but it would have been cool to see Eminem make that movie.
Bad Bad Weston… I admit it is possible that “The Fighter” of your imagination will win the December 10th, 2010 weekend; but there’s absolutely no way a David O. Russell rendition of “The Fighter” is going to beat a big thriller set in Venice, Italy, with Depp and Jolie. It’s just not going to happen. I dug the history lesson though. Sounds like you’ve got a vested interest in it. If so I’m sure everyone wishes you the best… but there’s no way it can trump that power pairing, in a Euro-thriller. To say nothing of the (sad but true) fact that there’s still plenty of time for “the Big O” to implode (prior to picture lock).
I heard that story as well. Weston is an idiot. The Dir of Dev of that Interscope deal should have taken Weston hostage like Frank Whaley did in “Swimming With Sharks” until he got his partner Eminem the role. Long live the people who find great material, and down with the out of touch Westons of the world. Kudos to that young DOD and all who read and have a vision. Weston should go back to Dimension and make scary movies w HarvBob!!!

so this is a 1 quadrant film? so the fighter is for guys, the tourist is for women over 40 and narnia 3 is for kids. sounds like a variation of last weekend (although narnia is a family film).
there was a time when people actually cared about quality and properly setting films up. i guess those days are over. this film will die on the vine like public enemies and a mighty fart. but for different reasons.

If what I hear is true about a hot sex scene or couple of them then I’m in. Its been a long time since we’ve seen a Basic Instinct raw dog sex thriller flick. Christmas no less.
I’m 99% positive there is at least one good sex scene in the script, maybe more.
This should be a seriously good flick. I’m really looking forward to it, much more than the rather unoriginal sounding “Fighter”.
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck is guaranteed to put fannies in the seats, as close to a sure thing as there is in Hollywood

Whether or not Depp was asked to gain weight for the role, if this still is any indication, he will be for the first time absolutely painful to look at.
However heavy he is, Depp will still weigh less than Jolie’s lips
