Showtime just announced that The Big C premiere attracted 1.154 million viewers at 10:30 PM. That’s the pay channel’s largest audience in 8 years for an original series debut. (Previous was Odyssey 5 on June 21st, 2002, with 1.155M.) At 11:30 PM, the Laura Linney freshman series delivered an additional 429,000. The total night was 1.583 million viewers. The premiere episode was made available for online sampling two weeks ago and to date has received over 1.6M online views. The Season 6 premiere of Weeds logged 1.262 million viewers at 10 PM. With a total of 1.9M viewers last night, this was Weeds‘ best night ever in viewers, up 4% from the Season 5 premiere of 1.217M. At 11 PM, Weeds added an additional 629,000 viewers.

Loved that show…can’t wait till next week
Saw “Big C” and thought it was just OK…not great…just OK. Laura Linney is a superb actor and am glad she is on TV weekly now. I’m just waiting for the new Dexter season to begin next month.
great, another mediocre show about women in peril Showtime is the new Lifetime.
Laura Linney won the Golden Globe for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy for The Big C
and the show’s fantastic
I have DISH satellite with DVR and came across TV and ENTERTAINMENT. It had 15 shows all free to watch. I clicked on BIg C and watched for first time. This was successful marketing for me(less likely to watch on computer as a genXer) This may have continued appeal for many viewers…it’s a great way to learn about a show. Hope this helps someone…..PS it’s a strong show if you haven’t seen it yet.
Maybe this proves viewers want the Botwins out of Mexico. I sure thought they were moving too damn slow during that premiere to really be in a desperate position.
The Big C on the other hand blew my expectations out of the water, and I was even looking forward to it. Somerville was just what was needed and gave Linney someone to play ball with.
A little over 1 million is a record number of viewers? Wow, and to think NBC and Co. Would cancel a show with those numbers. Why don’t all shows move to HBO and Showtime?
I thought they were both awful. Not an honest moment between them. These shows are trying so hard to be shocking and edgy that they forget about any kind of emotional truth. Or the writers are not capable of writing it. Not funny. Not engaging. Not entertaining.
Showtime has officially jumped the shark.
For those who aren’t following this show, this is Gabourey Sidibe’s (from “Precious”) television debut, and it’s just wonderful that it’s done so well.
What’s even better is it’s a big slap in the face to all of the haters who said Gabby would never succeed, due to her weight!
Talk about playing the numbers game lol 1.5 million viewers isn’t good for anyone, not even the CW. While I normally wouldn’t compare a network to a specialty channel, I don’t think anyone else has ratings low enough to make the comparison. That’s not to say all Showtime shows hurt this bad but when I see them trying to spin 1.5 million as good numbers, I mean seriously lol
but press never questions the numbers, they want for Showtime to win so badly they ignore massive ratings drop offs and totally buy the spin.
dexter has showtime’s all time episode record and it only hit, what, 2.6 million?
since showtime’s only in about 20 million households, weeds/big c did very well.
You’re a bit new to TV, huh? Showtime is in barely 30% of homes compared to 90% of basic cable. These ratings are awesome for them and more importantly, these shows add to their buzz which translates into new subscribers. Pay cable is different than basic cable. Dude.
If showtime had better shows they would have more subscribers. I had an executive say they don’t want anything that screams “HBO” even if it’s not on HBO already. They are so worried about being compared to HBO, that they let good shows slip through their fingers. There was no reason to pass on “Party Down.”
How can Showtime ever gain subscribers if they don’t get out of their little niche box?
Shitty shows on a shitty channel. Do we really need another women channel which is not free?
So you would enjoy the shows more if they were about men? WTF
Yes, all my friends with terminal melanoma become cheerful adventurers, jovially bantering with their diagnosing physicians over lunch. And as soon as they burst in and call their troubled neighbors “c**t,” the neighbors snap out of their 25 year depressions, put on nice clothes, cut their lawns as instructed, and become nice and friendly. LL performed admirably. The show is a crock. Can someone please handle cancer with an iota of honesty?
A few lame (and for some reason, poisonous) remarks here…what’s wrong folks? This is Hollywood and this show is cool. OK, granted, I couldn’t tell what it was really about from the initial marketing (leave that to a poor editor?) but I watched because Linney is in it. She’s always really wonderful and oddly, even with what was happening, I found myself laughing out loud. A lot. This show, while a reach, is a fun reach. I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out. Platt is great and it was refreshing to see Gaby Sidibe. Good cast. I hope it lasts.
Just finished watching the final episode of this season’s BIG C and can’t wait for season 2. This is one of the best series I have seen in a long time. The cast is excellent One moment I am laughing and the next crying. It can be rude and crude Put it all together and I call it superb
