UPDATE: Emmy-nominated AMC/Sony TV drama Breaking Bad won’t premiere fresh episodes for its fourth season until July 2011. That’s more than a full year after the conclusion of Season Three last June. “I think what AMC is thinking here is there will be less competition for us — particularly from the broadcast networks — if we launch our season during the summer than if we come back again like we did this time in March,” lead actor Bryan Cranston tells me. As a result, the show won’t be eligible for a third best drama series Emmy nomination next year. That also affects Cranston, who received his third consecutive Emmy nomination last month. (He won 2 years running and might three-peat on August 29). To bridge the 13-month gap between seasons, the plan is to produce short interstitial mini-episodes of 3-to-4 minutes apiece early next year after the show goes back in production in January. They’ll be posted on AMC’s website. “The idea is to keep people aware and interested in the show during the long time away,” Cranston says to me. “But I, for one, am eager to make these little interstitials important. I don’t want them to be simply filler or recap, but something that actually moves the storyline forward. If we’re going to do it, it ought to be a real part of the larger show.”

So, I guess True Blood or Boardwalk Empire will get the Best drama nomination next year as well.
Very bad decision by the network! They should be going “all out” with this show!! It has an incredible storyline and following. They should start immediately and create at least 10 more seasons!
ok for real, best show on air, yall need to get it on sooner than july, ive been waiting to long, get your promotions in line, and dont let me down!!!!! i need to see where the story goes!
i can not wait tell season 4 comes out i just wish they would begin it back sooner than july 2011 i have been waiting for almost a year to watch it again that is one of the best out there
They never said anything about Canceling it.
i agree fully bring on the new season!!!!!!!
Right??
Once again the network “suits” have had a brain fart! 13 months away is too long regardless of their ratinale. When you have a series with this panache and success one should “make hay while the sun shines” not wait for the next crop of mushrooms.
Another ben davis and susan goldberg brainfart.
Dude…. wtf with the super long gap in this and why ar they going to put potentially crucial plot points shoved into 4 minute episodes if we are lucky? If we are not lucky its just going to be 4 long awaited minutes that have no decent plot building and disinterest people who have been beyond loyal fans. I mean if there was ever something with a cult following Breaking Bad has it and the suspense is walking the line of being forgotten…. none of its followers want to see that happen.
Pleeeeeeease come back…. :’(
This is terrible news. I have two questions: isn’t July usually mad men time on AMC, so would breaking bad and mad men be on the same night? And is there any specific reason for the later premiere date?
Breaking bad is the best show on tv. Why isn’t it going to air new episodes this year?
This seems a little silly to me.
I can’t wait. I need my fix now!
What I would like to know is why are they taking such a long break? Kind of ridiculous to take so long.
My view is the writers needed some time to recharge the mental batteries. Thus season 4 will be well thought out, and will again be outstanding. It will be worth the wait.
Do you know the writers?
I freakin hope so…I hope America isn’t too pansy to handle subject matter like this and is demanding its end…
Agree completely…we’ll see
Mini-episodes? I don’t want table crumbs. What’s the reason for this?
I agree, why isn’t the best show on tv again this year?
So far, Breaking Bad has always been a spring (March-May) show and shared the Sundays 10pm timeslot with Mad Men (which takes it in July/August to October/November, so the shows never overlap.) If Breaking Bad is not returning until July, where will Mad Men’s 5th season be scheduled?
What on Earth is AMC thinking? Really? The long breaks between seasons are growing increasingly tiresome to this viewer. I find them very annoying.
You have got to be kidding me…
You make it sound like the only reason the show is in production is to garner Emmy Awards…
the only reason the show is in production IS to garner Emmy Awards…
The only reason this show is on the air is BECAUSE it garners Emmy Awards…
I love this show! Recently started watching, and I’m floored by Cranston’s performance. Why’s AMC doing this?
because great writing takes time, dumbass
This was mentioned way back when the season ended. The writing staff will get a head start on writing so that could make the season even better. The Sopranos and Curb Your Enthusiasm have had long gaps between seasons, while its annoying to wait the shows don’t disappoint.
I’m thinking this is because Mad Men is also going to be bumped back since Matthew Weiner is directing a film with Jennifer Aniston/Bradley Cooper. It was supposed to happen during hiatus last year but it didn’t work out. So that will push production of Mad Men back. That’s also probably part of the reason why AMC is moving forward with The Walking Dead, The Killing, Hell on Wheels and maybe a mini-series to fill the calendar along with Rubicon. I guess we’ll find out when Mad Men ends their season when it will come back. With Breaking Bad moved to July 2011 I see Mad Men in November 2011 or Early 2012. The Killing maybe paired with the second season of The Walking Dead will likely air in March 2011. Just speculation.
Last I heard, The Walking Dead was scheduled to premiere in October of this year.
With Breaking Bad being bumped up until later, does that give Boardwalk Empire a chance to get nominated.
The most annoying thing about this is that the season ended on a cliffhanger. It’s not like the new season, a year has gone by and this is where they are now. It’s going to pick up the second after the season 3 finale ended.
This is an awful decision. Someone needs to look at the history of shows that have taken huge periods of time off. Almost certain failure. This is one of the best shows on TV and its mostly driven by word of mouth. Who at AMC thinks taking a year off will help drive that? Taking the show off the air for 12+ months is going to kill the show. Think twice.
Shows that have taken long time off and come back incredibly strong: “The Wire,” “The Sopranos” and “24.” They need the time to connect everything and establish arcs and story. The last thing such a great show needs is a “Heroes”-like quality fallout because they got rushed.
Absolutely! Many of my fellow watchers were recruited by me to take a look-see in the first place. Many bought seasons 1&2 and were looking forward to the encore of season three. This was another fiasco, since at the last minute they decided not to run S3 again after all. People lose interest quick these days, no time for all this dilly-dally.
This makes no sense. You should give more to the viewers not less. Bad business call.
This is really not nice to Breaking Bad’s small but zealous fanbase. This show is not Curb or The Sopranos, two very established shows that could take long breaks and know that the audience would be there when the show chose to return. Breaking Bad is more like Rescue Me, another promising young show absolutely killed by long hiatuses. It breaks up the momentum of the show. As it was previously, the breaks have been long. Now it’s ridiculous.
I totally agree
I disagree. Rescue Me was an incredible show at first, and into the third season (at least in my opinion), it became so redundant and soap-operatic that it was hardly worth remembering which episodes one had seen or missed. I also am of the mind that although this show has a relatively small fanbase, compared to nationally-beloved dribble like Grey’s Anatomy, it is truly magnificent. If it takes a year of hiatus to conserve the quality of the drama–I mean, we’re all basically gasping to know what happens next–the zeal ought to be contagious, even if we have to contain our curiosity. Really, I just know that I am looking forward to seeing the next episode some lazy summer night.
Rescue Me was saved by the writer’s strike creatively which bounced back in the ratings giving the show two more seasons. The fourth season was horrible, made the show unwatchable. The fifth season after more than a year off made the show watchable again.
Season one of Breaking Bad premiered in January 2008 and the second season didn’t premiere until late March 2009. Well worth the extra wait then.
What Sony/AMC need to do is get the DVD set out this fall so they can build the audience more. True fans will tune in next July, only a 13 month break between the finale and premiere.
good to know somebody wearing a suit had another “good” idea. idiots.
At least there is going to be another season. I think the minisode idea could be cool as long as it really does move the story forward like Cranston said. Honestly, I would watch anything, anytime, anywhere that involves these characters. Beggars can’t be choosers ya know.
In my experience with shows that take long hiatus’s, it is always worth the wait. Maybe AMC’s plan will work and they will gain a wider audience, thus resulting in a 5th or even 6th season.
Im sure the AMC execs are thinking ‘BB is just as good a show as Mad Men, but why doesn’t it have the large cult following like MM? And how can we change that?’
What can they change about BB without changing the actual show? The season premier date/time of year, put it in a time slot right after Mad Men, and ‘innovative’ online marketing (i.e.- webisodes).
As long as these changes end up benefitting the show than Im all for them. What’s good for the show is good for me!
Breaking Bad is the best show on TV. Obviously the writers need time to create a story trajectory that lives up to it’s previous seasons. If they take a bit longer to do that, fine. The show’s audience is loyal and addicted and will be anxiously awaiting the new episodes! Bryan Cranston is a genius!
Wrong,nuff said.
What they need to do if they really want to build a fanbase is to show seasons one through three during this hiatus and have it lead up to the season 4 premiere.
GREAT Idea! Not all fans are into computers or will know about the mini-sodes. If vital info is in these minis.. some might feel lost when the show Finally does return.
Run the webisodes on AMC just before the Season 4 premiere, as well, ESPECIALLY if they take Cranston’s good suggestion to make those vignettes substantial. Webheads can get their fixes early and regular viewers won’t miss a thing: Win-win. DO NOT make regular viewers wait until the eventual DVD release to see those webisodes.
I agree that this is the best show on TV (and that is saying a lot, as I am a MadManiac also); I hope the long wait between seasons doesn’t slow the momentum or otherwise damage the show. AMC is definitely gambling, here.
I’ve already contacted Pullos and he’s given me a contract to start cooking now as a year is wasted business profits! Plus I made a deal with Skler to buy the car wash with the stipulation that she spends alot of time with me if you know what I mean! I also get to go into the time machine to Mad Men and get the entire cast wacked on meth!
