EXCLUSIVE: Paramount has just closed a deal to purchase the LAST MAN STANDING and develop it as a multiplatform franchise property. The hugely sought-after graphic novel from Heavy Metal publishing was the sensation of this past Comic-Con when it debuted. Marc Evans, President of Production for Paramount, played a major role in bringing this into the studio. Scott Aversano will produce with Daniel LuVisi, the artist and creator of the graphic novel. The project will be executive produced by Stephan Lokotsch, Russell Binder, and Peter Levin. The novel will be expanded into a comic book by Kevin Eastman’s Heavy Metal publishing label. Attorney Craig Jacobson made the deal. The graphic novel which was 2 1/2 years in the making and sold out within 2 hours will be expanded into a comic book series for Kevin Eastman’s Heavy Metal publishing.
Dan LuVisi told my pal Peter Levin’s Geek Chic Daily that Last Man Standing, or “LMS”, “takes place 600 years in the future, in an alternate universe and is about Gabriel, this invincible soldier, who’s been created to help win a war Earth got itself too deep into with Mars. After Gabe wins the war, he comes back down to Earth and is celebrated as this incredible hero. From there, he becomes somewhat of a celebrity, a Superman of this story, but then it all takes a quick turn. Gabriel is framed for an atrocious crime, by a terrorist organization known as Pandemonium and their leader, Dante. He is then sent to Level-9 Facility, where he’ll spend the next nine years in the worst prison of all time. Once Gabriel breaks out, only then does his true story begin, and the lies and twists unravel.
“As for the entire series, it’s a story of mine I’ve been crafting over the past two and a half years. I want it to be a graphic novel series, but start it in a non-traditional type way. Where most comics start off with a first issue, this starts off with a 230-page bible of a book, Killbook of a Bounty Hunter, that sets up the entire universe of the LMS world. But not only that, the audience gets an incredibly deep perspective on the protagonist, Gabriel, and what his plans are now that he’s escaped from Level-9.”

i saw this book at SDCC! it was awesome though it seemed to be getting a ton more buzz amongst the games crowd vs. the film peeps. nonetheless, a gorgeous work by an artist that has been rocking worlds on deviant art for years.
Was there ever any doubt?
So glad i could be a small part of this buy helping the artist and creator by purchasing this. Really looking forward to September 7th.
Can’t wait to see this. Been watching the artist’s work for a while now. Pretty excited.
Not to be confused with the Bruce Willis opus.
i Know LuVisi from DA and around,
whoever that reads this, REMEMBER IT and go buy a ticket, it will surely be awesome.
My sincerest congratulations and well-wishes go out to the wonderful Dan Luvisi for his tremendous success here! <3 Nothing is quite as thrilling and inspiring as watching great artists do their work. C3
“The novel will be expanded into a comic book”
Oh, the times we live in…
230 page bible to “set up the world”…
I’m pretty sure Nikki just did it in a couple paragraphs.
For all you creative guys and gals, Danny has dedicated his life to developing his creative talents and sharing it with all of you that enjoy his work.
Congrats! You are the last man standing! DML
this thing was everywhere in SD. the creator, luvisi, has been the talk of the deviant art community for 18+ months; he’s the absolute shit. personally, can not wait to see this picture come to life! what a great success story. superb finger on the pulse Deadline!! wow!
I’m so excited about this. The entire concept looks beyond awesome.
Hate to say it, but it sounds dark, depressing, and much like some many other recent stories that have created a huge buzz among fan boys whose adolescent unexplicably dominant tastes may soon lose their grip on the pysches of executives when they stop making money and are forced to find the next big thing… Definitely not a date or family movie, probably better as a graphic novel than a film.
Have you seen movies like Blade Runner, Alien, 2001: A space Odyssey, Predator etc. Those movies weren’t date OR family movies, but they did make good movies (except for may ’2001: A space Odyssey’, cause that was BORING) I’m not saying that this will definitely be a good movie, but it has the potential.
I personally know the LuVisi’s and they come from a roots of talent!! Why would anyone doubt his work! I cannot wait!!! Congrants!!
The hype machine behind this property is in full blast for this guy whose art is just over-baked rehashes of work by better artists like Jeff Darrow, Hank Mayo, Frazetta, William Stout and a lot of other terrific comic book and film concept artists. How many books were brought to the San Diego Comic-Con that sold out in “two hours”? To be a “sensation” would require thousands of books sold. Almost all the dealers in attendance can claim they sold out of a great many products/books while at the convention but it doesn’t mean there was some kind of “sensation” driving the demand. This is where customers come from around the world to buy something and throw the money at it.
This artist and situation reminds me of the Rob Liefeld “phenomena” where a young artist gets hyped for appearing “cool” and “fresh,” bound by a lot of collected contemporary influences. The Hollywood Hype Machine (fired up by some savvy Hollywood public relations persons) touts the artist as the next new thing. To the uninitiated of Hollywood who don’t know any better about the comic book world or have a history of the artist’s many influences then this new wunderkind’s work seems “cutting edge” when really all it is, is a rehash of the work of much better and earlier artists. Liefeld has had several film projects pushed in the LA TIMES in just this manner (on the front page of its Business section!) and yet, nothing ever happens with his projects. Why? Oh, the art sells it to some producer who only wants a “hot comic book guy” and it has a bare hint of a concept but that’s all. I remember the amazing and extremely insightful comic book artist Gil Kane expounding upon his decades of experience working in the comics and animation industries (Gil started out as an assistant to Jack Kirby and was a life-long friend of his) speaking about how something like a “phenomena” comes about. He said the comics world was like a head-less snake. Every so often some artist or writer comes along who is able to bring a very contemporary range of acquired aesthetics to that world and for a time becomes the attached head of that snake and leads it for a while before the young comic book market until whatever faults become apparent in the artist’s work and then it breaks off and some new head is attached.
So this artist created a lot of futuristic scenes and then threw them all together in a “coffee table” book with a set-up explaining a super-soldier that saves earth from Mars and then is turned on by his creators. And then the artist calls it a bible for a film and a comic book series. Gawd, if you can’t see the hype and packaging behind this collection of illustrations you’re either blind or just don’t have the experience to understand what is going on.
Wow, it looks like WTF! is a little jealous of this awesome success story. Keep trucking kid, and maybe one day you’ll be able to break out of retail and have your own movie deal.
Jealousy is a sad thing. Keep kicking ass LuVisi, you deserve it.
I agree completely. Alas, fanboys will be fanboys, blindly parading their rip-off-artists around shooting them straight to stardom. Fact of the matter is, in this industry; to lie, beg, cheat, and steal brings you to the top.
@wtf
I CALL TROLL!!!!!!!!!!!
also
U MAD BRO?
LSM rocks and rolls !
This is great storytelling.
On so many levels.
I’m am desperately praying to the Lords of the Universes,
that the Hollywood suits and pewks do not screw this up!
The only way that CANNOT happen…is if and only if
LuVisi has it guaranteed in his legally binding contract
that no one screws with it.
That they do it exactly according to his rules and regs.
If he doesn’t go for that himself?
Then none of us can complain about the outcome and
have any reality to our complaints.
Write on, right on!
