Even though Justin Bieber these days might be a bigger deal than global warming, An Inconvenient Truth director Davis Guggenheim has dropped out of directing the young singer’s 3D concert film for Paramount Pictures. Guggenheim withdrew last night. I’m being told from all sides that Guggenheim decided he’ll be too busy promoting Waiting For Superman, which Paramount acquired right before Sundance. But I wonder if Guggenheim might have gotten too much razzing from all of his documentary peers who did spit takes when Deadline revealed Guggenheim was signing on. Paramount has begun interviewing directors for what is being viewed as a good gig, because Bieber has such a fervent following.

BRING ON GODARD!!!!!
MIGHT be bigger than global warming? sorry–how many youtube hits does global warming have? …that’s what i thought.
“Guggenheim withdrew last night. I’m being told from all sides that Guggenheim decided he’ll be too busy promoting Waiting For Superman, which Paramount acquired right before Sundance.”
More likely, he was too busy reading the plethora of emails from people laughing at him.
…which was implied in the sentence immediately following the one you quoted…
He already mentioned the possibility of that:
“But I wonder if Guggenheim might have gotten too much razzing from all of his documentary peers who did spit takes when Deadline revealed Guggenheim was signing on.”
Who were the people on ‘team guggenheim’ convincing him this was a good idea? How could anyone even have thought that it was anything other than a joke? The only mildly encouraging thing about this sorry affair was the speed of his withdrawal.
HE BACKED OUT???
Jesus man, if you are going to do it, be a man and stand up and do it. Just make the best Justin Beiber 3D pic you can!!!
i soooooo agreee don’t hate on Justin Bieber because he makes more money than you
I heard this brat is a diva.
Examples please.
Kenny Ortega seems like a good choice to do this, yea?
Amazing how many people just want to hate on this kid. If he’s not your cup of tea, no problem. Frankly, I was out of the target demo for him over a decade ago.
But ask yourself: what had YOU accomplished at age 16? Was it even close to what Bieber has accomplished in his field?
Whether he’s forgotten in 5 or 10 years, whether this film flops, whether he ever has another hit or not…these things are all irrelevant. Here’s a kid who has accomplished more than most do in their lifetime. We should celebrate that, or at least refrain from spiteful comments.
There is accomplishement and there is hard work. Bieber works hard or he wouldn’t be where he is, but accomplishments? Like what, getting millions of youtube hits? Selling millions of albums? Did Bieber accomplish that, or did his fans and his management team? This kid has accomplished exactly nothing. Hard work, yes, but then again, I live in a place where between school, extra curricular sports and jobs, most 16 year olds work very hard.
I’ve seen this kid on at least 3 interviews now, and he’s an outright, egotistical, self-centered little prick. On the other hand, with all those people telling you you’re king of the world, who can blame him? Blame his parents!!
He’s just a 16-year old boy. Most 16-year-olds think they already know everything there is to know. Being a celebrity heightens that attitude to the extreme.
Give him time to cool down – from 16-22 are very wild years.
Fans and management team? Shouldn’t every artist with any accomplishment be thankful for those?
bieber has accomplished nothing?! r u mad?he is 16 n both his albums have gone platinum! he has the most watched video on youtube,n has the LARGEST fan following!! dudu what have u accomplished?? NOTHING.u guys think u r soo great sitting behind the computer n write stupid comments.get ur facts right before hating on a 16 yr old!!
Baby baby why oh why. Only one man can direct this picture and that man is Brett Ratner. Baby baby Ratner baby! Yeah!
oh god Guggenheim. Just take the money. Everyone will understand. Take the money and Justin Beiber and go help personally change some school policy that you’re so passionate about. If there’s anything to laugh at here, it’s team Beiber for wanting to go forward with this take on a conert film. It’ll make him look stupid no doubt and drastically reduce his longevity in this business. A life story about a 15 year old kid – he hasn’t even lived life yet.
This would be a better vehicle for a first-time director who needs a high-profile project to get his or her name out there.
Otherwise it just destroys your cred.
That’s cool, a’ight. We don’t need him, a’ight. I’ll be just fine without him, a’ight. Somebody call that Avatar-guy. Peace.
Agree. Who ever turns down paying work on his next project (a studio project, at that) because his previous project will keep him too busy with “promotion work”?
An excellent choice
Smart move. This Bieber kid is just a flavor of the month who will be completely forgotten in ten years’ time.
Mark Pellington who did U23D is logical choice to get job done well if he’s available… guy’s a great director, has uber-experience in music, knows the ins-outs of 3D etc.
Thanks Mark Pellington’s agent’s assistant for that. Haven’t you got your boss’s stool sample to deliver, or something?

Screw Team Bieber. Let’s have a shout-out for Team Hater Trolls too — this website would be nothing without the gallons of Hate-orade raining down the comment section.
Dopey project.
I don’t what all the brouhaha is about.
I think this would make a great companion piece to Erroll Morris’s “Shakira in the Round” project.
You people are all missing the big picture here.
Scorsese did Shine the Light, for God’s sake.
Okay so Bieber isn’t the Stones, but give him time. At the agency where I work at this is a HUGE trend. We’re tabling a lot of match-ups between quality directors and music stars:
Agnes Varda is in preproduction on Kylie Minogue: A Life in Song.
Andrew Jarecki just wrapped Capturing the Marty Friedman
And the Maysles Bros. just had a lunch with Taylor Swift.
Okay so Bieber isn’t the Stones No kidding, Bieber doesn’t even have stones yet!
Can’t wait for that Marty Friedman doc!!!
Pop, whoever you are, I LOVE IT!
The guy just got a Hail Mary to walk away from this piece of crap. Bieber is an arrogant little snot that needs to be slapped.
Wuttupp? no love for Alex Gibney’s NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK live “the smartest guys in the arena”??
Michael Moore would be good to direct this, if he’s done with his docu about Miley Cyrus.
Where’s Ryan Murphy in this? This is right up his alley.
I used to have respect for Davis Guggenheim but not anymore. Davis FINALLY scored a big studio big budget big star vehicle, family movie and he walked away. WhassUp with that? Yes, Justin Bieber is new to moviemaking but give me Bieber over Global Warming any day.
I would bet money Guggenheim read the posts on DH and realized how close to the abyss he just stepped. If he has any ambitions to direct a non-doc, he almost killed it by saddling up with the Beib.
Can you imagine trying to get your 2nd pic off the ground with legit actors when youre only experience directing actors is your 8 weeks trying to get The Beibs to “smell the lemon”?
