Debbie Reynolds, who hasn’t been on camera since Will & Grace in 2006, has been lured back to the screen by Katherine Heigl in One For The Money, the Lakeshore / Sidney Kimmel Entertainment adaptation of the Janet Evanovich novel series. Heigl stars as bounty hunter Stephanie Plum for director Julie Anne Robinson, and Reynolds will play Grandma Mazur, the outspoken and outrageous advisor and maternal grandmother to Heigl’s character. “Grandma Mazur is such a great character,” Heigl said. “She’s really feisty and the one who’s a real mentor to Stephanie Plum. We needed somebody for the part who would speak her mine and even be a little edgy. We approached Debbie Reynolds because she has that ‘Molly Brown’ as a contemporary grandmother. She’s so perfect for the part. Then she read it, loved it and joined immediately.”
Plum starts out as a cash-strapped unemployed lingerie buyer who joins her cousin Vinnie’s bail bond service as a bounty hunter in Trenton, New Jersey. Jason O’Mara, Daniel Sunjata, John Leguizamo and Sherri Shepherd also star and Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, Wendy Finerman and Sidney Kimmell are producing while Heigl and her mother Katherine are exec producers. Lionsgate will release the film in 2011.

Heigl?
After all those books I never pictured Plum as a bitchy China Doll.
These people are all wrong!!! Vincent should be Steve Buscemi, Mazur should be Cloris Leachman. don’t know about Ranger but he should be someone who is at least Latino since Ranger is Cuban – John Leguizamo would be better in that role. I can’t watch it – it’ll ruin it.
I agree totally about grandma Mazur it should be Cloris Leachman what was they thinking and LuLa should of been someone like Moniqe or someone like that not sherry shepard
Antonio Banderas would make a wonderful Ranger and Hugh Jackman would be great as Joe. I always had Sandra Bullock in mind for Stephanie when I was reading the books but maybe she’s too old for the role. I still would love to see her in it tho.
Sandra Bullock is in my mind Stephanie Plum, but perhaps getting her to do the part was to much. I agree with both men as well. However these Stars are high dollar stars perhaps they would/could not agree on a price.
I disagree with Cloris Leachman, she is to tall to be Grandma Mozur if you read her discription. Cloris Leachman is 5′ 7″ so is Stephanie Plum. However Grandma Mozur is shorter then Stephanie by to or three inches. Debbie Reynolds is 5′ 1″. Debbie Reynolds has a never ending love of life. I do agree Cloris Leachman is too, but she lacks the build of Grandma’s small frame.
I agree with you. It’s funny how we picture characters we read. I featured Jami Gurtz as the quintessential Stephani Plum Jersey Girl. I also pictured Ice T as Ranger with Duane Johnson’s (The Rock) body! Grandma Mazur would have been portrayed by Estelle Ghetty, hands down if she was still alive. Vincent Plum would have had to be Danny DeVito or Joe Pesci. Morelli is a tough one. I like Gerard Butler or Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Heck…either one of those two could play Jack and Jill for all I care! Soooo good looking! I might have even gone as far as RuPaul as Lula…but I think Monique would have been gutsy and proud enough to play her.
Lytton – shows how little you know about the books and about Katherine Heigl it seems.
I’ve read all the books (have you?) but won’t see the film.
The Plum character is a down to Earth Jersey Girl.
Heigl is a cold iceberg on screen.
The secret to being a popular actress is having men want to have sex with you and women wanting to be your friend.
She has neither.
And Grandma is more Cloris Leachman than Debbie but it could still work.
WOW, so you think men don’t find Heigl sexy and women don’t like her in general. That’s the most ridiculous BS I’ve read in a while. Simply based on facts it is just not true. Men find her sexy (if you disagree, please give me at least an explanation why is she constantly on the “hot” lists of every men’s magazines) and women definitely like her because I’m sure as hell that her female-oriented romantic comedies didn’t become Box Office-hits because of the male audience…
I love the cast that has been chosen for the Evanovich series! I think all the actors are perfect matches…I’ve read all the books…can’t wait for the movie!
I so agree, apparently people fail to realize that Heigl is a good actress because she actually has people beleive she is a 1) China Doll, 2) A bitch, 3) that men don’t like her. Wow she does have people confused.
Does anyone really like Heigl? If so, they obviously have not seen The Ugly Truth.
Think she is a terrible choice! They did a great job with Ranger and Morelli though in my opinion so that is a redeeming factor and what will probably get me to see the movie.
No Way.. Horrible choice for Ranger .,. it needs to he ” The Rock” or some one like him. He would be perfect for the role.
as for Morelli — not sute that Jason O’Mara.. is great .. i think Morelli needs to look more like Antonio Sabato Jr. — he looks like a true italian stud.. not some irish dude..
hello – he is suppiosed to look mediterrean, 6′ tall w/ dark curly hair..
I think the Rock would be better suited to playing Tank (Is he even in the first book? I don’t remember). I view Ranger as more lithe and catlike – also much darker in coloring. In the end, though, it’s not the looks, it’s the acting.
Karl,
I have seen “The Ungly Truth” along with my husband too,not that he wanted too but I was watching and he watched it with me. He enjoyed it and “Do you think she was playing her Character?” The was it was intended to be played. Ever heard the word acting? I once had the same opinion of Heigl when she was on “Grey’s Anatomy” now I realize she is a good actress. Give her some credit, and yes I have read all Stephanie Novels some of them twice.
YES! I LIKE Katherine Heigl. Ever since Roswell was on SciFi (yes, I KNOW they’ve made a mess of the spelling). I always thought she would be the only one in that group who would have a great career. Her talent in Roswell was obvious even though all the media attention went to Colin Hanks and Shirley Applebee.
“Roswell” was on The WB. If it ran on Sci-Fi, it was all reruns of it.
As for Heigl, yes she’s gorgeous, but she also has the personality of dry ice. She’s cold as they come!
As a straight guy, she has no appeal to me at all!
hey . what about jessica beil as stephanie plum.. i thikn that would have been good.
Would see just for Debbie Reynolds…
I was really hoping that Sandra Bullock would get the Plum role…and Loretta Divine or Niecy Nash for Lula. I agree with Leachman playing Grandma Mazur.
Completely agree with you. Sandra Bullock would have been a MUCH better choice than Heigl for Stephanie! I think Morelli and Ranger choices look pretty good, and Reynolds should be ok. But Leachman would have been awesome!
Sandra is 46…and way too old for Stephanie. Yes she would have made a great Steph but 17 years ago not now.
ANYONE who even half-read the series knows that the role is meant for Sandra. The problem is that they let SO MANY YEARS pass that she is now too old for the part.
I seriously disagree with Loretta Divine as Lula. Loretta was too old for the part 15 years ago! And she has none of the Lula qualities other than being a Black female. Mo’Nique is Lula, or even Niecy Nash, but Sheri Shephard will get the job done.
I can’t comment on Debbie for grandma because I am not familiar with her work. I always had Cloris Leachman in my head, though a lot of people are on the Betty White train and wishing her for the part. All I know is that Grandma is funny as all get out so this lady better deliver.
I hardly ever watch TV, so I don’t know who the guys are, either. The Ranger guy has a believable face, but from the on-set pix I’ve seen, he is physically too small. The other guy has nothing Italian about him, and I just don’t see Joe Morelli in him.
No one has mentioned the hamster. Who is going to play the hamster? LOL
Have to disagree with you Lytton – I think Katherine has great charm and warmth on screen. My main reservation was that she is normally blonde but having seen her brunette and dressed as Plum – certainly won me over.
Debbie Reynolds has done more for Hollywood than it’s done for her and it’s nice to see her get a juicy role. You’d think Carrie Fisher would have been able to write a nice sitcom pilot for the two of them by now.
Debbie Reynolds will be awesome as Gramma Mazur. She is smart, honest, funny and a real kick in the pants. I am beyond thrilled that she has been chosen. Debbie…..I’m looking forward to being entertained by you, yea!!!! Good choice!!!!
if you “READ” the physical despription of Gramma Mazur, how can ANYONE say Debbie Reynold would be perfect for role WTFNot wasting my time ,money etc by going to see a movie that I feel is just NOT going to even come close to measuring up to how I see the characters in books
I would have liked to seen Betty White as the grandma, but Debbie Reynolds is a total win in my eyes. Can’t wait to see her during those funeral pallor scenes!
I agree about Betty White. When I read the books I hear her voice and really could picture her in that role. I have a feeling, though, that Debbie Reynolds will make it her own and do a great job!
I couldn’t think of a worse choice to play Stephanie Plum but Debbie Reynolds could pull off Grandma Mazure.
I’m not thrilled about any of the choices except I can see Sherri as Lula.
i could so see queen latifa playing lula…i think that betty white would have been wonderful as grandma…i’m still out on catherine heigl as steph
None are what I pictured, except Sheri for Lula…Sheri’s got the swag, and can carry the Spandex! Even though Bullock is older now, she could still pull it off. And, I’ve never pictured Grandma Mazur as anything but a little old grey, frizzy haired woman. Betty would have been great, she’s got ‘attitude’. Debbie, who knows, but I wish all of this cast, and Janet..great success.
I love all of the choices they’ve made so far. It’s going to be a great movie and I for one am going to give them all a chance to show they can do it. I can’t wait to see it. Bet you money it turns our really, really well. Give it a chance. Give all of the actors a chance to show their talent.
I see more women are starring in projects that could become franchise films. Who will be the first to pull it off?
Besides Mila Jovovitch.
Go, Debbie!
When are they going to make a movie from the Valerie Wilson Wesley mystery novels.
Debbie and Carrie’s life is a sitcom, they should just tape it.
First instinct, this might work.
Tell me more!
I can’t see Heigl as Steph – she’s too cold and calculating. Plus, the brown eyes are so not Steph! Reynolds doesn’t look anything like Grandma Mazur either. I think the Casting Director should have been required to read all the books before casting but this since that wasn’t the case…this is one movie I’ll be skipping.
Reynolds can pull off Grandma Mazur and the rest of the cast looks pretty solid…except for Heigl. Heigl comes across on screen as brittle and calculating. Forget about the physical stuff – hair can be dyed, it is going to be hard to take Heigl as the anything but brittle and calculating Stephanie Plum.
After seeing Katherine in “Killers” I think she will be an awesome Stephanie!
I totally agree! I wasn’t sure about Heigl until I saw Killers!
NOOOOOOOOO!!! Please, not Katherine Heigl!! The woman cannot open a movie and Stephanie Plum is too good a character to have go to waste. This will be one and done. What a damn shame.
I think Debbie will be good, but I did envision Betty White in the part as I read the first book a month ago. Another possible could have been June Lockhart. She’s pretty feist too.
Debbie Reynolds as a cute Grandma Mazur?? Heigl as Plum?? WTF are they thinking of?? Not the books I know and love.
I’ve gone to the filming for “One” and Heigl is GREAT. Surprised me…casting is good. Betty White is too sophisticated for Grandma. DR will play it perfect. I love Sandra B, but she is too old for this part even though I love her. You should see the stunt doubles….drool.
