2ND UPDATE: Warner Bros closed a deal late last night for Battle: Los Angeles director Jonathan Liebesman to direct Clash of the Titans 2. Production begins February 1 in the UK and possibly Iceland at a budget comparable to the $130 million spent on the original. I’d written yesterday about the ongoing talks that were stuck on money. Later in the day, they found a common ground–the studio came up with more dough. The sequel is a natural considering that the protagonists played by Sam Worthington and Gemma Arterton survived, and the original grossed nearly $500 million worldwide. But Clash benefited by being one of the first major live action films to get a 3D retrofit. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody say they actually liked the movie, and there were many complaints that the hasty 3D conversion was less a quality breakthrough than a gimmick reminiscent of that short-lived trend of “colorizing” B&W films. Warner Bros and Legendary will try to do better on the sequel. While reports say that means actually shooting in 3D, reliable sources tell me that’s not the case. Liebesman will shoot in 2D, but Warner Bros and Legendary will spend to get a better transition to 3D which should make the mythical creatures more fun than, say, the cheesy-looking piranha currently swimming across movie screens. Liebesman’s deal was made by CAA, Principato Young and attorney Karl Austen.
EARLIER: Right now, little is going on in town beyond the race to lock down directors on fast-mobilizing tent poles. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures continue trying to work out a deal for Battle: Los Angeles director Jonathan Liebesman to direct a sequel to Clash of the Titans. The studio has been working on a sequel since the original grossed more than $500 million worldwide. But it was clear since last April that the film’s original director, Louis Leterrier, wasn’t going to return for a reprise. I’m told they are far apart on money. Leterrier has been meeting on blockbusters, and was Fox’s fall back choice after the studio met directors for X-Men Origins: First Class when Matthew Vaughn dropped out for a weekend, and then came back to accept the assignment.
On the X-Men: Wolverine 2 front, 20th Century Fox is between David Slade and Darren Aronofsky, I’m told. Slade, who just directed the summer hit The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, met over the weekend with Hugh Jackman on location where he is shooting Real Steel for DreamWorks. Aronofsky has also been talking with Jackman, and they have a good relationship that dates back to The Fountain, when Jackman stepped in after Brad Pitt dropped out. Jackman holds a lot of clout in the decision and while Aronofsky has some momentum of his own because of Black Swan, I’d say Slade has the edge. He is coming off a big summer movie with large-scale effects, which makes the studio comfortable. Fox went with Gavin Hood on the first Wolverine, and while he came from the Oscar-winning South African film Tsotsi, it was quite an adjustment moving into a tent pole sized undertaking, and Aronofsky has a similar prestige film background. Robert Schwentke, who created Comic-Con buzz for his film Red, had been in the mix – he was going to meet Jackman in Detroit along with Slade last weekend — but he opted out of the competition. Instead, Schwentke is eyeing projects that include Robert Ludlum’s The Osterman Weekend and Universal’s Ryan Reynolds-starrer RIPD as possible next pictures.
Reynolds also wants to star in the Wolverine spinoff film Deadpool. Fox hopes Robert Rodriguez will direct it but scheduling is an issue. Reynolds just signed to star with Denzel Washington early next year in Safe House, which starts early next year around the time Fox hoped to get Deadpool underway. I just spoke with Rodriguez. He said he has read the Deadpool script and likes it, but his own obligations promoting Machete and then directing Spy Kids 4 has made his participation tenuous. “They are trying to make a certain small window that’s going to be tough because of Spy Kids,” Rodriguez told me. “If they push it back, it would be a lot better for me.”

Clash of the Titans 2: are you effin’ kidding me? A sequel to the WORST 3D MOVIE EVER! Good luck.
Oh yeah, this movie was just about the worst piece of rubbish put out this year.
But nearly $500 million on a $125 budget buys you a sequel because the public like crap. Even when they say that they don’t!
There’s not a chance in hell Aronofsky will direct Wolverine 2. He’s not going to direct a sequel to a critical failure that only did so-so at the box office.
Agreed. He didn’t do RoboCop and he’s not touching this one.

Aronofsky can handle action. He’s no Gavin Hood. Hood made 1 good acclaimes film while Aronofsky’s resume is filling up with impressive work. He would be an inspired choice. The Wrestler may have been understated for him. But look at how he directed Requiem For A Dream and tell me he’s not made for action.
I totally agree. I think he would do an amazing job as an action director. He understands what makes an audience love a warrior (The Wrestler) and he has some of the best edited sequences in cinema (Requiem). However, I can’t see him directing a sequel of Wolverine: Origins. If Aronofsky were to do this it would have to be some sort of re-imagining. His work is of a lot higher caliber than Wolverine: Origins. The X-men franchise is great, but Origins was atrocious.
I agree. But then again, maybe he can make something of it. Not saying the first Wolverine was great when I say what I am about to say next. But maybe if he directs, it could up the ante the way Aliens did in comparison to Alien.
Again, the first Wolverine was awful. And I would like to see Aronofsky direct something more high profile that isn’t a sequel. Hopefully he’ll get something good soon.
It wouldn’t have to be a re-imagining; the movie will take place mostly (if not totally) in Japan and seems like a fairly stand-alone adventure. Plus, Christopher McQuarrie scripted it instead of David Benioff.
I’d still rather they just did an X-Men 4 and repair the taint that Ratner cast over the whole franchise, but I won’t haul that rant out again.
*Acclaimed… Stupid iPhone and my large thumbs…
the best part of this post is how totally unnecesary all of these movies are.
i’m all for seing more mutants on screen, but the last two movies were incredibly bad.
FOX ACTION MOVIES SUCK!!! nuff said
all movies are unnecesary
As much as I love Aronofsky and think Hugh Jackman gave a fantastic performance in an underrated ‘The Fountain’, I would prefer the two team up on another Aronofsky original. ‘Black Swan’ looks like it is going to be a great one, and while I’d be curious to see what the director would bring to the table on a summer tentpole, I don’t see him doing a more fantastical one like X-Men (whereas his involvement in Batman I could definitely see). Please no one involved with ‘Twilight’ though, I vote someone else.
And ‘Clash of the Titans 2′? Really? Just when I thought crappy post-conversion 3D might be breathing its last breath…
The sequel is supposed to be filmed fully in 3D.
The remake still sucked though.
Aronofsky? Is that a joke? He makes incredible low-budget dramas (well, other than The Fountain). He is not going to direct a sequel to a horrible spin-off action movie.
Exactly. The man is one of the few ARTISTS we have left making films. Is he really so desperate to sell out? That makes me depressed.
There must be VERY little going on if people are clamoring to work on sequels to crap movies nobody liked.
Wolverine being directed by any of the losers involved with the dreck that is Twilight makes this an instant no-see for me.
There was a Greek Mythology script on the 2009 Black list that was 10 times better than Clash… but then again… most things are at least 5 times better than Clash.
No, that would be Last Airbender. But close!
I want Aronofsky for The TMNT Reboot
That would be epic. I’m not kidding. It sounds ridiculous, but TMNT is at its best when it’s dark — the grittiness contrasted with such a happily silly concept makes for a lot of fun. (Just look at the original 1990 movie. Which by the way features Sam Rockwell as one of the young street toughs.) Letting Aronofsky take it on would produce something pretty great.
I didn’t like “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” but will watch the sequel b/c of the great character, Hugh Jackman’s acting and charisma, and let’s face it, the fact that nothing could be as bad as the original.
However, when it comes to “Clash of the Titans”, my motto is this, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” That movie had absolutely no redeeming quality whatsoever.
i work in this industry and clash of the boring, was by far the worst remake in years.the original had more action and drama than the remake 30 years later. they really need to go in a diffrent direction.
You all seem to forget that Aronofsky was long attached to adapt and helm BATMAN: YEAR ONE for Warners (pre-Nolan’s BATMAN BEGINS) as well as Frank Miller’s RONIN. The guy’s a true geek (he presented THE FOUNTAIN at Fantastic Fest), and has been wanting to make a comic book movie for ages. This is perfect.
Slade could certainly do a solid job, but Aronofsky would be the far more exciting choice, and has the potential to make something truly extraordinary (esp. based on Chris McQuarrie’s sharp script, in turn based on Frank Miller’s fan favorite Wolverine-in-Japan classic storyline from the ’80s).
Yes, granted, THE FOUNTAIN was at times more of an art installation than a movie, but it’s absolutely beautiful to behold and has one of Jackman’s best performances. Plus THE WRESTLER was great, and BLACK SWAN has huge buzz (and an amazing trailer).
I’m rooting for Aronofsky. Big time.
I mentioned Aranofsky’s involvement in Batman! Granted, didn’t flat come out and say it…but I figured alluding to it would be just as well. I remember hearing about his concept for it, sounded more like a Scorsese picture than Batman.
Gavin Hood didn’t adjust well to tentpole movies due to constant, endless meddling by Tom Rothman.
Aronofsky is a little movie man, a one trick pony, at best. Black Swan looks like crap.
A One trick pony!! Seriouslly i thought people who post stuff on movie forums should know about films. So never heard of Requiem for a dream, The Fountain? No you probably think he’s some nobody who made that hugely successful movie with mikey Rourke….. what was it again um…. The wrestler!
I mean come on i’m sorry that he isn’t one of your stupid summer blockbuster movie directors, who put out the same crap recycled every few years or a brukheimer/bay flick. All that you probably pay to see. Or maybe it’s because he didn’t direct the latest gross out teen hormone raged piece of tripe! Do me a favor go watch Vampire’s suck or something! Probably more your scene!
Slade = Brett Ratner
Aronofsky = Christopher Nolan
That said, I’d rather see a sequel to “Requiem for a Dream” or “Pi” than any of these crapfests.
Word is thar Liebesman just signed to direct Clash 2.
Give Slade a break.
Sure, he directed Twilight, but those who saw it have to admit that he made the best movie he possibly could have made given the shitty source material (and credit Melissa Rosenberg for doing the best she could with those pathetic novels).
My hat is off to him. But I love Aronofsky too, so… whatevs.
Errr… who cares about Wolverine or Clash 2? I’m more interested in a Rodriguez helmed Deadpool. If done right it could be like the comic book version of what Heathers was to all those John Hughes high school films in the 80s. A sharp, biting, darkly comic satire of the comic book movie industry. Something which it needs. Could be a breath of fresh air, turning the tables on all the cliche, formulaic comic book movies which i’m sure audiences are getting a bit sick of.
Finally rented “Clash” over the weekend… dare I say WORST THAN THE ORIGINAL, which was an epic piece of shit.
Aronofsky is a great lover of “Lone Wolf & Cub”. So he is perfect for the Japan-Miller-Storyline
Aronofsky would be an inspired Nolan-esque choice…but seeing as this is Fox we talking about??!! they’ll probably go with the Twilight guy!! WTF
Aranofsky seems like an exciting choice. I agree with people that the only thing saving Wolverine part II is Jackman and the Wolverine character. The first one was so Hollywood I wanted to cry. One critic said (and I SO agree): “The leaping.. always with the leaping.” It was ridicules!
But you gotta wonder why jackman let the movie become the way it did?? He is the producer on this and I think his lack of sense of what is really bad ass just got exposed (and I am a jackman fan saying this).. He dropped the ball on that one.. and lost a little goodwill with the fans too).
The Wolverine Japan miniseries was NOT a Frank Miller storyline. He was just the artist. Chris Claremont was the writer.
Chris Claremont! One of the greatest comic writers of all time and one of its most unspoken heroes at that.
