Lotsa Internet sites are claiming just now that The Insider‘s Lara Spencer already has been chosen to replace Mary Hart as host of Entertainment Tonight. I, too, heard the rumor that Spencer was contractually guaranteed the gig during her last negotiation. But not so fast… “It hasn’t been promised to her. Her people planted that,” an insider tells me. I hear CBS Corp CEO Les Moonves, and CBS Television Distribution President John Nogawski, and ET‘s producers “discussed that she would do The Insider and we would look at her and other candidates outside so there was total transparency.” Spencer might still get the gig: she has that chirpy cheerful quality TV execs choose. But, jeez, who cares? I don’t even know her name. And lame celeb shows like ET are a dime a dozen on the tube these days and suffer from the same blandness.

A: It’s LARA Spencer, not Laura.
B: Who cares? Does anyone watch these shows? Mary Hart was on ET for 29 years? I never saw it once.
If you never saw ET once and it has been on 29 years, that is saying more about you than the show.
In concept, Entertainment Tonight should have been a great show had it been done by real journalists. But, the reality is beyond hideous. There’s no there there. It’s just mindless PR prattle, dressed up in slick packages that gives no real information about anything.
Maybe there’s no room for such a smart thing on television (look at local news…another eye opening exercise in dumbed down nothingness) but it’s too bad.
Start with Entertainment Weekly and re-build the show from there as a tv format. EW ain’t perfect, but it’s 100 times more insightful than a week of “Entertainment Tonight” ever could be!
This show was relevant in the pre-Internet days of 1982, but now it is just a joke.
How about Deadlind the TV Show. Hard hitting and truthful. That would be fresh for TV. Right now TMZ is hard hitting.
this is a disgustingly opportunistic show, way worse than access hollywood. they hack away night after night on the same pathetic individuals and i’m surprised they have no shame in accepting their paychecks. mary hart is irrelevant and always has been. and her overdeveloped calves are not the least bit attractive, seriously. i think her husband had the dirt on someone at CBS and thus, she kept her job all these years.
given how et has become just like all the other hollywood news show. surprised that it took Mary this long to finaly decide it was time to go. for who ever replaces her no doubt will prove to be able to do the job just as good as Mary did though the replacement will have to put up with being compared to Mary and how much a part of et she was for so long.
The numbers clearly indicate ET remains “relevant”. Still highly watched, still very, very much wildly profitable. As a grizzled vet of the joint, it was not unusual to produce 4-7 minutes segments…They were in-depth, often over two show segments. Today the tease into spots is the story. The :30 bumper into spots is repeated as the story after the break. I’m not kidding. So here is the question. Have we as viewers become that ADD or has Linda Bell Blue and the entire TV entertainment gang formatted us this way? Bill Drake did a similar take on Top 40 radio in the 60′s and it worked for awhile. Hollywood views folks as simple kids, and they think they’re the smart ones who need to tell the idiots out there how to be. Are we simple….busy….overwhelmed? Or are we just the idiots rightly being treated as such because en masse, we continue to tune in?
In a one-two punch, apparently, Mary is taking a pay cut in her final year before the shove her out the door. The pay cut makes the fact that she “decided” to leave even less believable.
Why not just cancel this trash and give Nikki her own show?
I remember ET’s poisonous entrance into American media, in the 80s. It had a weird combination of self-importance and opportunistic sleaze, which was parodied to perfection by of course Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin on SCTV. ET’s vacancy and fake friendliness is now everywhere on tv. All news. It is a relief digital media has made this kind of PR Teschfest totally irrelevant. But it isn’t exactly Mary Hart’s fault, either. David Letterman used to relish treating her with sadism, and she took it alright.
I would love a “Nikki” show but its not going to happen, she might offend one of the big STARS and that would not be nice.
Mary is the only one who’s name I remember from all the Entertainment shows on tv. Maybe after Oprah fires Rosie she can
hire Mary to replace her.
Mary Hart is my favorite newswoman.
Tom Bergeron would be an ideal male host to take over hosting chores on ET! Tom’s trusted by America, he has a great persona, TV Station Owners know him. Tom has a talk show background. Give the gig to Tom. I trust Tom to deliver entertainment news and even fluff to my household.
I used to watch these once in a while but gave up a long time ago. They really do about 15 min of show or less by the time you take out commercials and then they all do tons of those coming up later. They are just a waste of time now. I get my news and entertainment news on the internet where I can pick and choose what story to read or video to watch. I don’t need 10,000 stories on Michael Jackson or Linday Lohan or any on half the jerks they cover.
I thought Nancy O’Dell was going to get the position.
Lara Spencer is notoriously difficult to work with but she came out smelling like a rose after Pat O’Brien self-destructed. Mary Hart is a pro, relevant or not. Unfortunately, the viewers who love her are not advertiser-friendly.
Its unfortunate that all these shows strip their hosts/correspondents of any real personality they may have. That’s why they all look/sound the same.
It seemed like Samantha Harris was being groomed for the job. She should get it. Much more personable than the robot Lara Spencer.
worked there for years, thru many of the ups and downs. i hope they let mary exit with style and grace. regardless, linda will promote the hell out of it. but for me as a consumer, et is irrelevant. go tmz!
Lara Spencer is a terror to work with. I feel sorry for any crew held hostage by her.
“Deadline” joining forces with “ET”??
Why not??
It will make the show much better.
Perhaps such an alliance doesn’t have to wait until Mary Hart leaves.
